It seems they don't really know how the seeding for the next years UCL actually works. Yes, there will be seeding by dividing the 36 teams into 4 pots, but then each team plays 2 from each of the 4 pots. That's the league part of the game. The knockout-rounds are "seeded" in that they are determined based on how the teams performed in the league stage. Team ranked 1-8 will meet one of the teams advancing from the play-off between teams ranked 9-24 and the cup tree is known in advance. So teams ranked 1 and 2 in the league stage can't meet before a possible final, an no team ranked between 1 and 8 could face each other before a quarterfinal. In theory you reduce the chance of big teams meeting each other in early rounds, or cinderella-stories when a underdog goes far by "just" having an "easy draw" . But instead you get the luck effect by how the league stage turns out (and that in large part due to the luck of the draw among the teams drawn from pot 1 and 2). Suddenly City ends up #1 and Real Madrid end up #7 in the league stage and meet in a quarterfinal. The league draw is where the luck element will still play a big role. There is for example quite a difference in team A) drawing Liverpool and Real Madrid from pot 1, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal from pot 2, AC Milan and PSV from pot 3 and Marseille and Real Sociedad from pot 4 vs team B) drawing Man utd and Sevilla from pot 1, Shakhtar Donetsk and Salzburg from pot 2, Young Boys and Braga from pot 3 and Antwerp and Celtic from pot 4* Teams in the various pots are based on how they would have been seeded if this was introduced in the 23/24 season). If these example of draws where the case for team A) = Inter and team B) = PSG, you would expect team B to pick up significantly more points form their group.

How can people forget the yesteryear’s of Wenger’s Arsenal used to have Koscienly, Mustafi, Mertasacker, unknown makeshift wingbacks and CDMs. The team used to qualify to CL but used to get destroyed against Liverpool, City, Chelsea even at home in PL. Arsenal used to lose after leading against average teams in PL games . If this is happening this year? Are the Arsenal midfield makeshift like Wenger era? This Arsenal side has a chance to write their own epic chapter in their club’s history. There’s gonna be a bunch of noise about Bayern beating them 10-2 years ago. Heck, I wanted Bayern for that very reason because that loss was my last memory of Arsenal in the UCL prior to this season. That shouldn’t matter to them. None of the current Arsenal players were on that team. The only one who may be intimately familiar with those matches is Arteta. This team showed a lot of moxie against Porto. Sometimes teams will play scrappy and force you to grind out a result. Arsenal showed they can do that. They’ve also shown since the turn of the new year that they can blow teams out of the water when firing on all cylinders. This could be the makings of a season for the ages well up there with the Invincibles, I would say better, if this Arsenal squad can win both the Premier League and the Champions League, which I suppose with the Community Shield would technically make a treble. Regardless, treble or not, winning a PL title and a UCL for the first time ever would be the coup de grace and essentially the coronation of Arsenal as a true world football powerhouse.

My issue with the current format is that you know some of the teams has got through to the quarter finals without a ball being kicked, UEFA should have scrapped the Knockout playoffs and last 16, so it still be 13 games, or only have a final and teams play 12 league games and top 2 play in the final, keeping it to 13.

Beat the best to be the best.Eventually the easier side of the draw as you will meet a team from the stronger side .

Absolutely agree with ale and stevie on the draw. Like dude, they dont need to draw the semis out first, its more interesting and fun to have a separate draw on the semi finals, it makes the bracket more wide open, it makes it more intriguing.

If you look carefully at the Draw it feels like each team has to play their equal in terms of power.. almost. 1. Bayern are not better than Arsenal and even though Arsenal are slight favorites it's still a new thing for them so they're equal this time. 2. Real & City are considered the best. 3. Barca is mediocre but not bad for sure - PSG are the same. 4. Atletico are a tuff team and can bring surprises but are not expected to reach a final - Borussia is almost the same.

Have to agree with Stevie here. The draw system and letting supposedly weaker teams have a pathway to go deeper in the cup was kinda nice. Seeding just ensures bigger teams don’t take each other early.

Dortmond Can Shock all of you Cause Athletico may Struggles if, Dortmond is Very good Going forward and there team Is picking Good form. Some Key Players and Getting into Form and they Can Surprise people. Even Arsenal are Stronger this Season and Have Found Good Form.. So people Counting them Out But they Have Different ways to Grind out Games and Get a result.. So let's not forget in previous years Teams who Haven't played FLAMBOYANTLY AND great Attacking wise Have made it to the Finals and Won even when they weren't playing there best football Throughout the tournament.

Having a draw ahead of the semifinals is crazy. Gathering everyone to pick two names out of bowl is overdoing it in my opinion.

The draw should be based on some sort of ranking or seeding, similar to tennis, to get better match ups. This makes the semi and potentially the final very one-sided.

That's how it's done in the group stages and only the best teams progress from there and they all have equal chance.

All 4 team are capable of beating each other, 1 thing for sure is that as fan we are in for 2 good game- city Vs Madrid and arsenal Vs Bayern.

Borussa and ATM got lucky draw lol, but it’ll be a fun match

This draw seems like an over compensation by UEFA to make up for the drab fest that was previous round.

This isnt tge same Arsenal that kept getting wooped 5-1 vs Bayern. We are contenders tonwin the Peemier League....we are on par with Man City. Not fluke. Plus, Bayern is having a sub par year. Tuchel has a poor record against Arsenal

As an Arsenal fan why wouldn’t you want your team to play against the best opposition! If we had played dortmund then say a Barca next they’d say it was an easy path.

We are basically having the final in the City vs Real Madrid matches.On saying that every team that are in the quarter finals deserves to be there and in essence have one eight of a chance of winning

i mean honestly if atletico do win it this year they sort of deserve it I mean from what happened in 2014 and 2016; and they've beaten the laliga (real, twice) and serie A champions

Looking st CURRENT momentum and form, my power ranking is City, Arsenal, Real, Bayern, PSG, Atletico, Barcelona and last Dortmund. So it is as bit of a shame how the draw came out.

On the other hand, we will see great football - 2 matches vs one final which is usually boring and ends up 1-0 most of the time….

We live in a world where Barca are considered underdogs in this competition atm that’s tough (by the betting industry)

Tbh City doesnt scare me like they did last year. Have Zero Doubt Madrid can win. City cant keep a clean sheet and they arent as strong as last year.

I think not. City are getting into their stride now. De Bruyne and Haarland have hardly played together until recently and City are a winning machine. The best in the world; they will crush Real Madrid (and I'm not a City fan!)

To be honest, just don't make a narrative of one team having difficult route or easier route, Instead i will say that the draws are of equals or near equals which is good for the quarter finals but i am afraid that the final is not going to be that fair

The cup tree is determined by how each team finish in the league stage of the new combinded league of all 36 teams. So the luck element is moved from draws in the KO rounds to the luck of the draw if oppositions in the league stage (2 drawn from each of the 4 seeding pots) and the luck of how a team end up in a combined league format. The difference in ending up in 3rd or 5th place could mean the difference in meeting Real Madrid in a quarterfinal or getting to a semi without facing any "heavy hitters". When each pot of 4 consist of 9 teams, there will be significant difference in how tough a draw could be. As you could draw both Man City and Real Madrid, but as likely could draw Man utd and Sevilla (all four teams would all be seeded in the same pot 1 if the format was introduced this season, along side PSG, Inter, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool* - Liverpool would have been the fifth team from Premier League to compete and be put in pot 1 ).

Feels like our side of the draw (arsenal) is the Semi Final tbh. No disrespect to the other teams of course. Will be exciting to see how it plays out.

I don't buy "other side is heavy" Bayern is struggling heavy this season, Arsenal lacks the experience, RMA and city are the only heavy sides there

Oh cmon, the thing is the other side is much heavier than the other, Bayern is a big club who is almost always one of the favorites to win the cup, and Arsenal are most in-form team in the world smashing teams and sitting at the top of the prem

One very important part of this drawing that I completely disagree is why the first team drawn in a pairing gets to play the first match at their home stadium. This is very, very wrong. The first team drawn should play away first so they play the more important second match at their home field. The wrong and unfair UEFA way is that the first team got penalized by being forced to play their first match at home and then play the more important and deciding match away which is at the second picked team home stadium. I found this selection very poor, very unfair and very wrong. What are your thoughts on my criticism? Thank you.

How is this unfair, and what exactly is the difference if you let the first drawn team play away first? Then the away sides will complain. This doesn’t make any sense
