Absolutely gutted to hear about Phil Read’s death today, the world has lost one hell of a champion and a real racer R.I.P prince of speed

Mike 'The Bike' Hailwood was always Reads nemesis. While he was still alive and racing Read was always second best..... Read was a determined racer but he did have a selfish streak. For me Mike Hailwood was the Boss..

Saw Phil Read racing in 1967 together with Bill Ivy on a 125 cc Yamaha at Sachsenring/East Germany. Unfortunately Ivy crashed and died two years later at the same circuit.

Henry Seidel I saw him ride against Bill Ivy as well, but at Brands Hatch around the same time. This was at the height of their feud from memory, and they were riding like madmen! Hailwood was there with his Honda 6, as well as Agostini on the MV.

@@gm16v149 Nothing to add, thank you. I still see them all before my very eyes. And hear the sound of the engines. To me the worst tragedy of that time was when Bill Ivy crashed on the Czech JAWA he had ridden for the first time. I still saw him during the first laps of the training, he was as fast as the devil. And then, all of a sudden, the music from the loudspeakers stopped. There was a long period of silence, and then they announced that Bill Ivy had died in the local hospital. His engine had blocked, and he crashed through the fence of a nearby garden. Think there were about three hundred thousand viewers, and none of them said a single word. By the way, I believe they were all great. But Mike Hailwood was the best of them all. Isn't it a tragedy that he died in an ordinary road accident together with his little daughter ? What a destiny for a racing cyclist ! Sorry for mistakes, I am not a native speaker of English.

Read was a shithouse for what he did to Bill Ivy they had a pact that Ivy already a 125cc champion would let Read win the 125cc title and Read already 250cc champion would let Ivy win the 250cc title once Read had won the 125cc title first he then reneged on the deal when he went all out to claim the 250 title I never had any time for him after that.

I Also heard that and like you I never had any time for him after that, I heard he was with his girlfriend later to be his second wife while his first was at home dying.

@@phillipbooth5378 Read was always a selfish, self promoting arsehole. I've got a story to tell about Read when I was competing in the Classic Manx GP in 1998. A bit too long to recount here, but lets just say I scored a point in memory of Bill Ivy. 😉 Oddly enough, the following year I rode an ex Bill Ivy Cotton Telstar in the Lightweight Classic.

I think you will find read had won the 250 and the argument was about the 125 and ivy wanted his cake and eat it. I’ve met Phil read numerous times and I’ve never had a problem with him also all these stories are just hearsay. Do you believe all the stories about Rossi hating every rider who he meets virtually or do you think it’s maybe to make it more of a spectacle to get bums on seats .

@@mrlittlemouse1 no he hadn't won the 250 crown the 125 title was the first to be settled that year and Read won it courtesy of Bill easing up in the races he could so easily have won and then Read stabs him in the back the treacherous git a shithouse of the first degree.
