CHAMPAGNE - WINE IN 10

Today we are talking about the region that has become the gold standard for wines with CO2, the place that puts the sparkle into sparkling wine: Champagne! Champagne's name comes from Latin for "open countryside" - Campania. The region became the first in the world to produce Sparkling wine in larger quantities. It also became the model for many other sparkling wine-producing regions who copied grape varieties and methods from Champagne.

What is my most favourite champagne? What a grand question. Well, guess I better keep buying it and tasting, then I’ll know definitively. I’ll do this sacrifice for the good of mankind. 🍾 I have learned so much from you and you’re pretty charming too! Thanks for the channel.

My favorite champagne is Jacques Selosse's signature cuvee: Substance. It is certainly not for everyone, possessing both an oxidative style (made using the solera method) as well as a prohibitive price tag. I don't drink it often but when I do, it is simply heaven!

Konstantin, I have been interested in the resurgence in sparking red wines. Would you consider a video on that subject. It's interesting why it seemed to be basically non-existent and has recently had some seemingly nice offerings.

Thanks for a nice and informative video again! I am always a bit sad that it is so difficult to find medium dry or sweet champagne on the market. Only had Moet Chandon Nectar so far and would also like to try more like this an also really sweet ones, too. To answer your questions, the best one I had so far was Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2004.

Another great video, thanks! My favorite champaigns - Jacquesson: from the reasonably priced "700 series" as luxurious "day-to-day" bubbles to the more expensive ones like the Avicze Grand Gru, the Dicy Carne Bauntray when there is an occasion to celebrate; or the Dizy terres Rouges when looking for a bit of crazyness - Jacques Selosse: Because they have such a unique style and taste; an Initiale or Substance is never wrong (though already really expensive), the Rose is worth a try, and maybe a Ay La C^te-Faron for Christmas? ;) What's actually your favourite champagne, Konstantin?

Great! Champagne is my favourite region of all, so the question is tough, but my favourite produceres are Vouette & Sorbee, Bollinger and Benoit Marguet What is your opinion on the wines from Aube? I find that many with “classical” champagne tastebuds look down upon the wines? (I often personally find them very lively and interesting)

I have never had Vouette & Sorbee but heard some good things about them! Yes, the Aube is still not regarded very highly, but the quality has improved a lot in the last year and some Pinot Noirs are excellent from here.

I quite enjoyed the Nicolas Maillart Brut Rose Grand Cru. It uses grapes exclusively from the village Bouzy; a Grand Cru region. It's sold at a bargain compared to the more well known names of Champagne. I see you have a magnum of their Platine. How was it?

Amazing you lived in Nelson. I’m a kiwi and lived in Nelson for four years. Managed about 3 months of lifting the wires on the vines… hard work. Question: what is your view of NZ’s methode’s compared to champagne? This could be a great video comparison. The winemakers here still aren’t quite acknowledging it’s methode champenoir yet - in that both the method and the blend is being used excluding meunier

Meaning no disrespect to those that work so hard to make champagne, I always joke that champagne is an example of how good something can be made if only the Brittish, French and Germans would work together more often.

You are making amazing videos man, educational and fun, making everyone thirsty! The best one I have tried so far was Marguet ‘Shaman 14’. They make it predominantly PN so the sexy mouthfeel comes with it, and just a touch of Chardonnay making it finish crisp. As so far the best (subjective) balance of fruit and diacetyl. Have you ever tried? What do you think of it?

Hello, I was told today that Blanc de blancs is designation of origin for Chardonnay only sparkling wines in Champagne. Is this correct? I thought you could use Arbane, Pinot blanc and Petit Meslier. Couldnt you make a blanc de blancs without Chardonnay and just those 3 grapes or do regulations/laws forbid it? Thank you in advance, much love from Spain.

How should I cellar my champagne? I see 'experts' saying upright to keep CO2 between the wine and the cork, while other 'experts' say flat is best for the same reasons as other wines. Please advise what would be best.

Standing / upright is my choice. Less direct contact of the wine with the cork means less risk of TCA.
