Chameleon Bites Venomous Snake While Being Attacked

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This boomslang was caught off guard when the chameleon he tried to eat actually turned the tables on him and fought back!

The remarkable sighting was captured on camera by 62-year-old Brian Abrahamson during a safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Brian, the owner of Bridev Construction, documented the extraordinary scenes on the Maroela Loop. He shared the footage and sighting with LatestSightings.com.
"We were driving along the Maroela Loop; the scattered Maroela trees provide an amazing backdrop and just give one a tranquil feel. As we took a bend, there was a car stopped on the roadside. My heart raced! What could it be? The gentleman in the other vehicle waved us down and showed us a boomslang hunting a chameleon in a tree that was right next to the road.”
“I was with my close friend Peter, and we decided to stay and watch what was going to happen next. Initially, the boomslang looked like it had the flap-necked chameleon cornered. But the chameleon decided it was not over and began fighting back.”
“The chameleon, surprisingly quick and agile, fought back fiercely, biting the underside of the snake. It even changed colors, shifting from lime to dark green, perhaps to confuse its attacker."
Above them, a brown snake eagle hovered, waiting to seize an opportunity. It was, however, being mobbed by two beautiful lilac-breasted rollers, adding a whole different excitement to this already very captivating sighting.
"The turning point came when the boomslang paused its attack, sensing the eagle overhead. The snake was cautious, afraid of becoming prey itself. But as soon as the eagle left, the snake struck the fatal blow, biting the chameleon below its flap right into its open mouth."
"The eagle returned, perching on a nearby knob thorn tree. Sensing this, the snake quickly vanished into the grass, leaving the dead chameleon hanging in the dead tree."
"Always be patient and watch out for the smaller interactions among animals in the bush. Such moments, though often overlooked, can be as thrilling as any big game sighting."

    I used to raise and sell Jackson’s chameleons in Hawaii back in the 1990’s. Those Jacksons were lucky Hawaii is snake free, they loved it over there. In Africa there’s all those venomous snakes and chameleons have absolutely no defense against them. They’re cool reptiles and fun to keep as pets

  • @ICTS22

    @ICTS22

    They are an invasive species there, just like the mongoose. When I lived there, my room mate had one. I don't even remember where he got it, but it got really sick probably from my friend smoking weed and cigarettes in the room where he kept it. It stopped eating, so one day we went for a hike and released it into the wild. I took a picture of it and still have it. They are cool, but really fragile pets.

  • @kychen4738

    Mate, snakes are not out there to decimate chameleons. If that happens, they are starving themselves out. Interaction like the one in this video is actually example of co-dependence. Snakes get food (and then other predators similarly control snakes) and chameleon population gets controlled-balance reached. And Hawaii, nah, they compete with local birds for food (insects).

  • @thesdf1234

    @thesdf1234

    @@kychen4738 I never said snakes were out to exterminate the chameleon population in Africa. I just said that chameleons don’t have much defense against a snake attack. They don’t have much defense against any predator for that matter since they move so slowly. But you’re right, nature balances everything out, and chameleons have survived for ages in Africa, so they’re doing something right

    @@ICTS22 you’re right, the mongoose and Jackson’s are both invasive in Hawaii. And they can definitely be fragile. Back then you were allowed bring them to the mainland on passenger airplanes in a carry-on which would be unheard of now. I’m just glad nobody released venomous snakes in Hawaii 😅

    Although the chameleon likely succumbed to the venom in the end, if you look closely, it was also impaled by a thorn immediately after biting the snake, which is why it was unable to move on the branch at the end.

    I don't understand how the person stopped recording after what I read in the description? Unless the video was cut and they never released the full thing... C'mon, doesn't make sense someone would just stop recording the scene taking place??

    Unfortunately women tend to end filming abruptly due to their emotions. It's why BBC and NatGeo hires men cameras.

    Are the dark areas on the chameleon a result of the venom? Can the boomslang swallow the chameleon whole?

    No. Sometimes, you have to run, if possible. I guess with the snake’s long reach the chameleon had no chance, even when running.

    Among many animals, chameleons feels like they were built unfairly wrong. They have the will and determination to fight but they just weren't built with the weapons to at least defend themselves.

    Ah mãe natureza! Sempre com uma forma romântica e lúdica de controlar algumas espécies. O devorar uns aos outros é tão normal, que muitos acham isso um espetáculo! Na verdade, o choro e a dor de quem é devorado vivo, não importa muito.🤔😢
