I feel bad because the songs of this movie got released at the wrong time. The year it got released, people were drooling over the songs of Chikni Chameli. But such a masterpiece did not receive such praise, remaining an underrated gem. AR Rahman was not even nominated for best music in Filmfare.

Unfortunately Bollywood only feeds us the Uber-romantic 'soni kudi', 'mahiya ve', 'dil luteya' type of saccharinized version of that culture, that focuses only on romantic love. This would lead one to assume that all Punjabis do is woo girls and beat bad guys to a pulp, which I know for a fact is not true ( having been to Punjab). For once, it is refreshing to see the poetic, spiritual side of a wandering minstrel a la Baba Bulle Shah.

This song is based on a true story in Punjab (Punjabi forklore ). In which an old man was waiting for his son named challa who helped some people cross the river as he was a boatman, but never came back , no one knows what happened to him . Soon the old man gets tired of waiting and gets mentally ill , he asked people if they had seen him , he used to everyday go by the river and put his hand in the river hoping challa would come back , he used to laugh and cry recalling the memories of challa 😭 , soon the man left his home . (Watch challa by Khan Saab) Also he is saying jalla in the song which means mad , it's a reference to challa's father who went mad .

Some amazing pieces in this song: 1. 2:26 beautiful lyrics, (rough "gungi" word but truly fits in the soul of the song) 2. 3:18 true happiness (when you are with kids, it is surreal more than materialistic happiness), 3. 3:28 (this scene shows though he loves this passion of singing but at the end of the day is somewhere his livelihood too) 4. 3:57 his bonding with strangers 5. 4:27 epic expressions, only SRK can do this :) Noteable things: 1. Rabbi has taken this song to new level by his incredible singing and voice modulations.. 2. All through the song, SRK is seen gelling with the public busy bustling in the day to day running of corporate life, a great message that even if the meagre earnings and pity jobs in a foreign land, a man has found his true happiness by following his passion.. 3. Throughout public response and reactions in the background are amazing... Katrina has been just overshadowed here by singing children, dancing caricatures and artists in the end piece of the song.. I was not a big fan of SRK offlate but after listening to the song, he gained respect by his performance..
