Destructive testing of an old lift at Winter Park, Colorado. This is enough to make you never want to ride a chairlift again....

Those 3 fellas standing there until the last second are probably not the sharpest tools in the shed

About the georgia incident it was 100% human error, the emergency braking system was overriden by the operators prior to the rollback. The brakes could have been activated manually during the incident but the staff failed to do so.

Wow.... This really gives a great representation to the amount of load on the uphill side of the lift. Do these lifts use the drive wheel as a large disk brake to control rotation, rather than the hydraulic motors alone? Kind of like the carnival rides at amusement parks. The diameter of the wheel looks like it could yield a significant amount of braking force. People take these things for granted until something like what happened in Georgia wakes them up to our everyday dangers.

Unfortunately a real incident like this happened in Georgia (country on the Black sea) around year 2012, with many passengers involved and injured, including children

They showed this when I was working as a ski lift operator. Scared the hell out of me.

Some of these people have engineering degrees but not common sense. A bunch of cement blocks loaded onto chairs and let them roll backwards and these guys stand that close and even after the blocks start flying through the air they stand there...

Sometimes the hardest part of skiing is getting off the ski lift!
