Thanks for the tutorials. I like to learn the mechanics and the science/reasons behind the steps as well as the tips and tricks from your how to videos. You’re a good teacher, and I’m glad you show us how not to do it and how to practice the patterns as well.

took me years, only things i know, i had to learn, it took years of just practicing , not ever hardly producing a thing, just training myself... wish i could say it was a natural gift, but it wasnt, i spent four months studying, and figuring out where my thumb should be one year...lol...

Great tutorial on the details. What, in your opinion, is a good log height for an owl? Would proportions be approx 1/3 head to 2/3 body? I've never done one but would like to try. Also, do you nail the log to the bottom plate which is then clamped down? What about kickback? I presume you use the side of the blade, as you explained, and never use the tip.

Proportions dont really matter... depends on the look youre going for... but good question... as far as handling and holding the carving down ,thats explained here and in many other videos... i use the tip often... so not sure what youre asking there...

@@badasswood Hi, thanks for getting to my questions. I thought that using the tip would cause kickback to occur.

Yeah its not difficult... heat forging is ages old...im workin on a damascus bar. But the tip needs to be very pure spring steel and thats very tough to get out of an ingot block...especially with old hammers torches and coals and an anvil...

@@badasswood It sure is old, esspecially damascus steel. Im just really impressed you would make a bar out of it you know. Would love to see how that holds up. Love your videos. I hit the sub button, keep m comming!

Makita 4051b? I'm dying to get a dime tip on that saw! How? Appreciate the help, textures are something I struggle with

4051b should actually be able to get a 1/4 potch sprocket for it, try Bob king, bear necessities...he was makita rep last I knew... I remember the 5012b, every one had them with a cannon 8" dime tip,my friend Dave lavoy let me use his at Ridgway one year, long long before electrics were an accepted thing in chainsaw carving... that had me totally hooked on electrics...I never looked back after using his there, that was like 20 years ago, I had a 5012b with 3/8 pitch, never got a 1/4 for it, only used it for ice, but I wanted to make it into the same set up as daves was years before, but then smoked that saw cutting ice with it, and could never find a replacement for it,they're very hard to find now...I know baileys on line used to have 1/4 pitch sprockets for the b model makitas...everything i have is uc model, so we have the pleasure of fabricating our own custom 1/4 pitch sprockets, that can take weeks to get right, with out having any actual machining equipment...lol...
