Something important about the combat system it's that at the end of each battle your hp and tp are restored. So you can really launch all your different attack without fearing missing some TP point. 😁

I know modern JRPGs are being designed like that, but I don't like that approach. It's similar to those first person shooters of the 2010s, in which, if the enemies were winning, you simply go a little away and your health would restore automatically. Not exactly the same because combat is totally different between both styles, but the feeling is the same, and it's a feeling of the game being easy, or the adventure not really dangerous. Nothing's at stake.

@@vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898 have you played saga games? hp restored at the end of battle, but all turn based FF games are easier than any of the saga games. hp/mp restored at every battle doesn't necessarily mean it's easy, depending on how the devs balance enemy's stats. it just will require different kind of resource management.

I prefer games that operate this way, makes the combat way more fun imo, this usually puts the focus on combat making it more challenging, and less on resource management. I don't mind resource management in say resident evil games, but rpgs not so much.

Thanks for the video Alex! Got the game a few days ago. What got me hooked was the storytelling. Also, the movement speed of the character while exploring is just so right. Exploring doesnt feel like a chore even if you need to backtrack to some places. Battle mechanics wise, its so creative. I love the "oil, dry, wet, heavy" debuff to create enemy weakness. I am so unbelievably excited for this game. I do have to be honest though, I didn't know about the no XP or leveling thing....thats a huge thing for me especially in JRPGs. If they have a good weapon/armor system then I know that can be a great alternative, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that's the first thing I've heard that worried me.

There's a lot of ways to tweak things to make it a much more lax experience if you don't want to engage with the strategy developing and what not. I'm planning to make a guide for the game tomorrow, so I'm hoping people can use the tips based on my experience!
@FullMetalB

@@BacklogBattle Oh no, I'm all about strategy and all so it's not about that. I just generally need a good leveling system to feel a good reason to battle. If I'm just battling and not getting rewarded with some sweet, sweet XP and level increases unlocking new abilities then I find I lose interest in wanting to battle a ton because I don't feel I'm getting anything from it. But if it gets money to buy a lot of interesting gear with stats and special skills then I'm still interested.

@@FullMetalB That's a good point! There is a psychological effect that triggers whenever we level up in games, so this is a reasonable concern!

Oh, no reason to be worried, you get grimoire shards after boss battles which work like level ups. unlocking an active or passive skill with them generally also gives bonus stats, and then you can use these grimoires to level up some stats anyway. The weapon/armor system is akind to FF7 materia system. Not only you can use gold and resources to upgrade weapons and armor,it also upgrades the amount of slots on items. Then whatever gems you picked can be combined for more powerful versions and put into either weapons or armor. There is no number telling you how strong your party is, but it's the beauty of it, you'll get a feel for it instead.

Rarely has a game ever captured me like this one. I could not stop playing and I already hope for a sequel. The rich world of this game definitely has more to offer. The only problems I have is the volatility of the combat system and the lack of information. Overheat punishes you fourfold and you cannot read up on what stats and status conditions mean. You have to rely on your already existing RPG knowledge. You also get tutorial texts only once with no options to reread those in the menu. And those are literally the only problems I have with this game. It's damn close to perfect.
Seems solid and it's been getting a lot of praise. Nice review, so I think I'll give this a shot tomorrow . It's 15 percent off for a week on GOG or Steam. So 21 bucks for a jrpg seems more than a reasonable price.

I've got 30 hours almost and I'm still enjoying trying to 100% the game on my first playthrough, it's an amazing adventure for sure!
Alot of poeple seem to think this game is easy due your party being fully restored after battle, this isn't true at all. The battles themselves are overall more challenging, hence you have all skills available to use in every fight. Lots of successfully rpgs do this (xenoblade chronicles) Restoring health between fights manually is tedious and just an artificial difficulty people buy in to. Auto-heal is great for the games paceing and saves you from having to pop to a town constantly.
