think it was a couple years ago, NFL network, or films did a documentary on him. Football Life maybe ? He drives, or at least then, a smart car I think it was. That episode really opened my eyes on Ocho. I'm a 9er fan, but if i could ( was usually alot back then cause i'm on the east coast ) I'd watch Bengal games just to see what shenanagins Ocho would be up to next. He never disappointed. lol

@russellsymes9226 I believe Chad did not mean it literally when he said this . He was talking about watches and jewelry then Chad asked Shannon for the time then Chad proceeded to say time is free. He probably meant knowing what time in the day is free so no need to buy a Rolex. Chad obviously used his time wisely as he is financially free from what I know from his interviews. You can theoretically extend your time on earth by exercising and good nutrition. As we know we can end it prematurely hopefully no one does this but also accidents occurr.

This is my first time really hearing of this guy, he's smart on the way that he thinks and moves. Of course most people that looks like me and this young man will buck against him being a financial mentor because alot of my race hate on each other and would try to mock this man and his intellect. I admire his spending sense and financial thought process.

Smart man. So much confidence to know who he is, and where his true value lies, and not to get caught up in what others are worried about. Wow. I respect this man.

My wife and I recently did the Financial Peace University at our local church. Chad Johnson tells it exactly like it is. It’s so refreshing seeing people that are financially disciplined and living a life not out to impress others.

The part about this that is overlooked is that this man, by living the minimalist lifestyle, is truly showing how happy he actually is. happy people don't have the need to spend money or seek social validation from others, because their happiness comes from within, not from the outside.

I have so much respect for this guy. I need to shake his hand so badly. He knows the value of money and is thinking generations ahead.

It’s refreshing to see an athlete that has a great sense of who he is and the value of money. He’s a great example for every player and for everyone else.

I respect it. When I got my first full time job after college I was putting away $1,000 a month by paying attention to my spending. One part of my saving strategy was to go to the supermarket every Sunday after church and get a lb of cold cut meat, 1/2 lb of sliced cheese and a loaf of bread and that was my lunch for the week. My friends used to laugh, but I save $24,000 in 2yrs.

My dad worked pipeline for 30 years. Saved 75% of everything he made. Retired at 55 and was set. I can remember him calling his account and there being 4-5 million no matter what. He has a normal house and a 88' Chevy. Wears Dickie pants and white Reebok shoes. Looks like a normal dad. Never understood it till I got older. Now my dad's 68 years old and still well off. Takes the family on vacation every Christmas. I took after him and pipeline too. I'm about to pass a Million in the bank. But I don't live a crazy life style. He taught me a great lesson. Chad was in Gifted and Academic Excellence classes way back in elementary, classmate (s/o North Beach elem) Always been intelligent and hyper-competitive. It’s not an act, this is who he is. So proud of him

I don't understand fake jewelry. Risking being robbed for fake shine and it has no resale value

For everybody who thinks this man is lying. He isn’t!!!! I played at the U and Chad would work out with us in the off season because our program was the best for any football player. He would always teach us to wear fake jewelry and not spend money. He had some of the prettiest, biggest, and fakest cubic zirconia earrings I ever seen and I wanted some bad. Your career and your name will always speak for you and not the material things we consume. Athletes, rappers, and entertainers alike have everybody fooled buying expensive materialistic items that depreciate. When people believe that is real, there is no need to have to prove that it’s not. It’s not fake it, till you make it. When you make it, continue to fake it. It’s probably what helped you get there in the first place. Miss Chad for real. Blessings to you brother!!!!

100% true. Also using that money to invest. Even if you lose it, at least its better that you tried to get rich than just spending on something that will bring nothing in return. 10k on a car to get from point A to B with some extra money for emergency is better than 30k on a car, living paycheck by paycheck.

Man he is a rare breed, mind you, this was in his 20’s. I salute him for being different

Man I’ve always respected this man on the field. Knowing his financial smarts during his career makes me respect him even more.

Chad was a great citizen in Cincinnati. He'd show up at high school football games, drove an old car and really appreciated his popularity.

Ochocinco was always one of my favorite players when he played but I never knew he was like this. You can tell he’s being 100% real cause ain’t nobody gonna lie about shopping for their jewelry at Claire’s. Wish more people, including myself, took his advice to heart.

This is invaluable. I was not a Chad/Ocho fan, during his playing days. But he’s mentally grown as a man. Respecting this wisdom he’s kickin!

Man this man SAID IT!!! Once upon a time I had the slave mentality of feeling like I needed designer brands and jewelry to validate myself. And as I got older I realized how empty I was then. Your name and who you are is of far more value than anything you could ever purchase. Now of course I’m no multimillion dollar athlete, but it works for everyday folks as well. CONFIDENCE IS KEY!
