  • @Julesb2183

Basically Chad and Lori met at a prepper conference when they both were married. The instantly hit it off and Lori ended up just staying at his table selling his books with him. They justified it because obviously they were married in another life (I believe he said he was Moroni and she was his wife in a past life.) Then Tammy, Chad's wife, dies mysteriously. Lori's husband (don't remember his name) is killed by her brother who also has their belief system, but the police never took it seriously because he claimed self defense. Her brother and Tylee's dad also died mysteriously, but it was ruled natural causes, but Tammy was ruled that too previously 🤷‍♀️ And she's facing charges for her niece's husband too. I think that was just an attempt, though.

I've read/binged so much Mormon content in the last month that I know more about Mormonism than Catholicism at this point, and I went to Catholic school until I was 14. I even spent a whole morning reading the CES Letter after Heather Daybell (Chad's SIL) mentioned it in an interview.

For why they wanted to kill the kids, I think that Tylee probably was noticing stuff she didn't like about Chad and she started speaking out about it. She definitely would have had issues if JJ was mistreated. The whole taken over by dark spirits excuse was the reason why Vallow had to go, but it was really because they wanted to be together. He had a bad spirit that was taking over him. They wouldn't even call him by his name, but the name of his bad spirit. I think Chad decided the same thing here. Also, I can see chad not wanting Lori to have them in her life because they took to much attention and he wanted it.

I followed the saga of Chad and Lori, I might know way too much about the story. I listened to the whole Lori Vallow/Daybell trial… Maybe too much? The best line from Lori's trial came from texts between Chad and Lori that were read out loud in the court. In one text to Lori, Chad said that they were “cheek to cheek and loin to loin”. I laughed so hard. The LDS church beliefs (for the last 187 years) planted the seeds of what Chad, Lori and her brother Alex did, IMHO. They drew lines and made assumptions with Chad’s "gift of discernment”, the church gave them permission, they felt justified in murdering 4 people because it was for the greater good in their sick minds. They thought everything was going to be ok, the world was supposed to end on July 22 2020 (according to Chad) then they would gather the 144,000 chosen people. It was all in the plan.

I mean, to be fair, she most definitely had a personality shift when she became converted to Chad's cult. And I find it unlikely that she would have killed her kids if she had never met Chad. But, that doesn't mean she was always a good mother or a good person. She reminds me so strongly of my own mother who is diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. And even hearing about how things were before Chad from family members, she has always been a terrible, cruel person who only cared for others because it made her look good. She also manipulated those around her for her own gain well before meeting Chad. Her own son couldn't wait to get away from her and describes her trying to sabotage his relationship with his wife.

Agree with the commenter below that Lori was pretty much always not a good person. People tended to have misfortune around her before she met Chad. Chad’s wife, Tammy, suddenly died at age 49, though having no health problems. He married LV two weeks later. I think they had the agenda and got rid of whatever got in their way. They used the weird religion to rationalize getting together and murdering Tammy, Tylee, and JJ. She also had her brother kill Charles Vallow at some point too. This is what happens when narcissistic sociopaths collide and leave damage in their wake. I get married people are sometimes attracted to others, but this twisted tale is not what most people do when it happens, thankfully. Allegedly in my opinion.

Bruce Porter. That's a real guy and I know him. He's in my old stake and used to be our gospel doctrine teacher. He's a mormon "scholar" who writes books and does lectures on a very Mormon skew of ancient history. I.e. an apoligist masquearding as a scholar. Since Chad's romance story is obviously autobiographical, it's a fair bet Bruce Porter really was at the same convention as Chad, hawking his books - and did give Chad and Lori the stink-eye when he sensed they were on the verge of fornicating rigth in front of him. Hilarious.

  • @LeOhio817

Late to the party but, the motivation for all of the deaths was mostly for financial gain. Both of the perpetrators allegedly had their spouses killed and upon each death, they were the beneficiaries of their spouses insurance policies. Chad did receive a large payout, and Lori expected to, but her husband Charles, who was killed by Lori’s brother Alex, changed his beneficiary to his sister. Plans were thwarted. She also took over SS death benefits from her daughter Tylee, a couple of months before she was killed. That money was used for her car payments and other expenses until Lori made her have the funds directly deposited into her own account. The benefits for her adopted son JJ, were also conscripted by Lori. Part of the charges against her are for Social Security fraud. I believe that she was always deceptive and eventually she would have found a way to get rid of Chad, like she did her previous 4 husbands.

Then when they were notified she was on hospice and dying they all stayed vacationing in Hawaii. Barry, their father, had been giving Stacey morphine in her fragile condition, when the the side effects are loss of appetite, weight loss and drop of blood sugars - she was 76 pounds and had Type 1 Diabetes! And she had medical anorexia from the diabetes. There may be more than one modern day joe smith narcissists in this story.

And Lori was once married to Moroni. Moroni and Jesus performed their sealing at the temple, I thought that was very open-minded and forward for being her ex-husband. 😛

I understand the impulse to say “no one who does horrible things is mentally well,” but that’s very stigmatizing of mental illness. Specifically I find the way you equate personality disorders with evil to be stigmatizing. (Comments like the ones at 2:25 and 14:30) No disorder is an “evil person disorder,” and there are plenty of good people with cluster B personality disorders. (And other disorders, but you seemed to be talking specifically about cluster B) Not all murderers are mentally ill, and not all mentally ill people are murderers. It is harmful to equate the two I’m not saying that Lori and Chad were mentally well when they murdered, just that, ultimately, their choices were the deciding factor, not any mental illness.

I did not mean to imply that there are evil person disorders or that mentally ill people are generally worse in any way (OCD, ADHD, and formerly ED here ayoh 😅), but I do stand by my statement that mentally well people do not murder. I absolutely think that certain mental illnesses play a role in situations like this (though of course, it’s an interplay of factors.)

@@ZelphOntheShelf You can still perpetuate ablism and sanism while having mental illnesses, especially when your comments were specific to personality disorders, which you do not claim to have I feel that saying only the mentally ill commit murder is very stigmatizing. Mentally well people can make bad, cruel choices. You can say “not all mentally ill people are evil” but so long as you also believe “all evil people are mentally ill” you are still coming from a stigmatizing perspective It seems like you’re defining mentally well as “people who make what I would consider to be good, justified choices.” But you don’t need to have a disordered way of looking at or experiencing the world to be cruel. If all murders are done by the mentally ill, than the reverse must also be true, that all mentally well people are incapable of murder, and that’s a dangerous way of thinking I must admit I’m a bit sensitive to associations between mental illness and violence after the recent murder of Jordan Neely. If you think only the mentally ill can commit murder, you’re going to be more on guard around the mentally ill and be more likely to perceive them as dangerous, even when no violence or threats have occurred. Your first thought when confronted with cruelty and violence seems to be “what mental illness did they have?” Can you not see how that is stigmatizing? If your first thought was “what race are they,” that would be clearly a product of racism, even if you were a POC and even if you did not think that all POC were inherently violent
