Bonjour Leslie and Rob, fun questions, sincere answers, always wishing you both the very best!
Always enjoy the two of you! Thank you!
Thanks for answering my question, Rob and Leslie. I’m glad your patreons and viewers are making a tangible difference, too ;-)
Great idea to have a couple in the house!
Yes, please do a full episode on your lives/faith/etc!!
Another viewer/subscriber from South Africa here 💜🇿🇦
Thanks for your reply to my question, enjoyed learning a bit more about your adventures with your chateau. Looking forward to the bathroom reveal. 🇨🇦
Hello Rob & Leslie, from Regina (Saskatchewan). 🖐 Happy to listen to your Q & A today. You have both taken on a huge project, taking care of the chateau and building into the lives of the students who attend. Happy to hear you share about your meeting and falling in love at KLBC. A great camp, like many other Bible camps across the country, for campers and volunteers to grow their faith and relationships. 😊🖐💞 May God continue to encourage you both as you do His work, both in France and the US.
You guys deserve so many more likes than you get. Wish I could like your videos multiple times. God bless.
Thanks for answering my question. Look forward to the next video
I just love the two of you and what your doing to help shape and guide young minds. Leslie you look amazing and I love your beautiful accent ..your love story gives this old lady hope. Much love from your friend in Vermont, USA❤️
I’m so glad you will have someone stay for winter ! you just full of courage ! God’s is with you on this adventure I hope the village appreciates the work you do for the beauty of these towns
Manor and maker are a Canadian couple that bought a chateau in France also.
Really enjoyed this chat, especially hearing more about your backgrounds. Best wishes for continued success with your venture!
I have watched your videos from the beginning of your mission. Enjoyed each and every one. Watch all those commercials too to give you some $$$. Love your ability to be relaxed and calm in front of the camera. Keep up the great work with the students.
I so enjoy your videos as I sit here nursing a broken leg. It's a wonderful distraction, and reminds me to keep you in my prayers! We're not able to help financially as I would so love to do, but I can lift you up to the Father as you seek to serve Him in this beautiful and unique way! It's a huge investment, but the most valuable part of all is what will be evident eternally, resulting from your labor of love in the lives and hearts of the young people who spend a few weeks there. Thank you for your beautiful example of taking what you have and releasing it to Him and for His use as faithful stewards of it. I for one would love to be present when He speaks over you both, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant..." The Lord bless you and give you wisdom and strength for each step of the way! Mary, from WallaWalla, Washington! Oh and about the tunnels! My husband and I think that some brave soul should be lowered into the well and examine the area where the bets are flying in from. They obviously got in from some other entrance than that well's lid. Also here's another's thing the indentations out in the woods, the hogs may be using that entrance, but hogs and rabbits cannot line up perfectly squared stones in across as those are! That's too good of a possibility to pass off, if you can get someone with proper protection to investigate that! Is it situated in line between the Chateau and town? Who knows what treasures or artifacts could be hidden down there? Could finance your repairs! We'd also try to knock through a bit of that brick wall in the bomb shelter. If the tunnel goes from the Chateau to town, that could be the Chateau entrance but blocked off, either by bricks at one end or stones at the other! There are people who explore caves professionally and there's great possibilities with each of these!!!
Give yourselves some grace. Hopefully the roof can get done soon.
🙏😘I'm praing for you from Oregon.
One of the chateau in Escape to the Chateau DIY (in France) did get a grant to help pay for their roof.
Manor and Maker KZread are from Canada. They live near Stephanie Jarvis of Chateau Diaries. There are 2 or 3 more that l have seen on KZread who are American as well. There is another couple who moved from America to a French château very recently. One is American and his husband is Austrian. Sorry, I can't remember the name of their vlog.
I think you have a misconception with the non-profit thing. Non-profits are allowed to make money. You can charge money and accept donation for time or services. I suggested getting a depreciation report for the chateau. This will provide legal evidence that the chateau needs money and any money as income goes towards those repairs. You can have a million dollars a year (as example) as income and as long as you can show on the depreciation report that money is allocated to the chateau for repairs or services its all fine. You are allowed to make an income because you are required to eat. update: any money above budgeted in a financial period (profit) is put in a contingency reserve fund for emergencies. This is how you remain a non profit. no matter the income.

You gotta be careful with this, I'm not much of a paper work guy, but I've been part of setting up a couple "Associations a but non lucratif". Sometimes, depending on what you're doing, you need to make a for-profit company along side that gets employed by the non lucrative association. But french paperwork man....

Yes... good points. It is complicated. the American non profit can certainly take in funds, but we're hesitant to take rental money in France, since our non-profit is based in the USA. So, Leslie and I basically host the kids in the chateau for free. But they do pay for the study abroad program as it takes them to several countries and covers their costs (food, hotels, travel, utilities, etc.).
Love that giant mural behind the couch!!! How beautiful!! It really makes the landing spectacular!! Its the show stopper! Love you all and praying for you all. God loves you so much. Its so evident in your life! You are true witnesses for Christ ...
Thank you for your live. I love seeing your chateau and it actually has some fame in France. Helen from the Littlest Chateau in South of France mentioned seeing your podcast. Lord willing someday I will be able to visit France just to see, till then I will travel "online". Que Dieu vous bénisse, vous et tout votre travail, un compatriote canadien.

Great idea for a roof fundraiser.
Aw the sound was so much better when you shut the windows. Wow Rob your life!
God bless you both!
Looking forward to the bathroom reveal. Rod sounds very excited and proud of it.
My husband and I are humbled to be patreons and play a tiny part of supporting your mission! We LOVE watching your videos. We feel like w'ed be friends if we met. Our sin lives in Portland, OR
To keep bats away, my friend from Princeton in About 1840s house. She would take stockings with moth balls and hang them in her attic. The moths are sensitive to the smell.. and will fly off.
The Chatelain network has Americans too! Journey to the Chateau has been welcomed with open arms as have the ladies at Chateau de Puy (Lady of the Chateau Productions on YT) so reach out to others! Stephanie at Chateau Diaries would likely be the best place to start or Billy from The Pethericks.....both are amazing people with lots of connections. Don't fall into the mentality the network is only Brits or for Brits.....they welcome everyone!
Great live talk even if I watched later🙂
Robb, the main house for the Aldersgate School.had a roof put on that was guaranteed for life. Glad it was done by others and not us, because it was very costly. It looked very old, coppery. I wonder if such material was available in France you could use. I wish I could remember the name of the company. Since the paper work is still available, because our son used it as well , I could send it to you. It would be more economical than slate. Very sharp looking. Could send pics too.
On the slate roof ... just as putting concrete. The people who built it really thought about it, the slate makes the wind go through a bit, which aerates the attic and wood so it doesnt rot. There are people who put different materials and the wood started rotting. Same with concrete which was put in between wooden beams, and the base started rotting (check out How to renovate a chateau)

It's a nice place, but less than 1km from them is the Chateau de Coutrolle, and a bit further you have the Bois Bureau. This part of France is littered with chateau, this whole area was the hunting grounds for the King Rene d'Anjou
Have you meet all the other Chateau owners in your area. I.e. Chateau Diaries and the Strawbridges. Also try Channel 4 tv for them to film you.
I love your philosophy on life and the restoration process
Leslie, what are we going to do with Rob?!! How can we get him to call you a designer instead of a decorator?!! 😳Great post today. I love Q and A format!

My bad (Rob here), I just see these words as synonyms though Leslie has told me many times that they are not. It's almost as bad as calling the grass outside a "yard". Can't shake the habit.
You two are the only chateau owners that are out to benefit others primarily. You look to help young people and give them chances that otherwise they would have little or no chance to have. You are putting blood sweat and tears into saving (being a care taker) of a historic French Chateau to save it for future generations to enjoy. You work your fingers to the bone and actively choose to be uncomfortable both economically and physically to make all this happen. I am not a religious man but I hope your God is ever so good to you as I really feel you two deserve it. Thanks for doing the Q&A and sharing a bit of your passion and joy. Rob, not far from the cathedral in Angers is a little patisserie called Laurent petit it is at 4 Rue St Aubin and they do really lovely stuff I am sure you would love. When you are next in Angers maybe pop in and have a look I am sure you will smile 😃..

Enjoyed the chat!
i would love to come for the 2 weeks for retired people
Ok, saw a great question we missed..... Here it is: Are all your students visiting religious or do non religious with an open mind come along sometime too? You know.... we ask a bunch of questions to incoming prospective students, like are they ok with taking the bad seat in the van, or doing dishes, can they be nice to people living together for 2 months in close quarters. We also ask them if they are ok living with our student handbook rules (bedtime around midnight...., quiet times, limits on Alcohol, basic levels of modesty, etc.). We don't specifically ask if they "are a Christian", though we do ask to hear about their spiritual journey, we want to know their story a little. And... we also warn them that a big part of the program is reading through the Bible, we ask them how they feel about that. We're very up front about the fact that our worldview is decidedly Christian. Now, we don't always take students that are from our tradition, and we have some that are asking questions, some who have struggles, or who have left Christianity and are thinking about it, or others who are quite happy in the Christian life. If people want to spend 4 hours a day exploring the New Testament (in addition to all the other fun stuff we do), they we're happy to have them along for the ride. Ultimately, each student will get to decide what they believe at the end of the day. If Christianity is truth, then it should stand up under scrutiny. All questions welcomed. By the way, I would also say that an "open mind" is important when you're searching for truth. In my estimation, most of students have come with one. Does that make sense? All that said, I should also admit that in the first four sessions we've done, most of our kids have had some connection to Christianity (real talk).
God Bless your parents. Cracks are not a big deal. The house will stand for hundreds more years. The house is well built
Before the roof or during, you need to get the wood of the structure of the roof repaired or why spend so much
Here's a thought to consider: the roof is important, but the foundational issues are more urgent. There's a small mountain of stones bearing down on the metal pogo sticks holding them up in places. If/since money is an issue, it might behoove you to set up a Give Fund Go account and look for crowdsourced funding. That organization is run by Christians and I suspect draws Christians who will want to help. Blessings.
Hello from Alaska
Very cool backdrop. Wallpaper Mural?
If you have to clean it it's a room. Lol
Hi there, I had trouble hearing, there was a lot of crackling, muffling sound, I so wanted to hear on your comments 🥰
Thanks for your frank talk. I think you need a young couple to join you and live on site to help out. You clearly need more staff. A place that big is going to need more work and maintenance than you two can possibly provide. Just simple logistics.
Get some volunteers to help with the work besides students
how long have you owned the Chateau
May I add, that "Our French Chateau, Life in Brittany" are an American couple, if you would care to check and or connect. Regards.
I’m sorry that I couldn’t submit my question before or during your live Q&A. It seems like you are making a difference in the lives of young people both in France and the U.S. - even if we don’t share the same beliefs I sincerely respect and appreciate that. My question is this - Assuming the deed of the chateau is in your name, if someone gives you money to help with the restoration/maintenance it is directly benefitting you as it’s no doubt increasing (or at least maintaining) the value of your asset. Are you planning to donate back what you’re being given when the time comes to sell the chateau, either while you are alive or through your estate? Thank you.

This is a very perceptive question. The IRS requires us to have a board who makes the financial decisions for the 501c3. We've had input from commercial real estate/lawyer person to put together our rental agreement. Basically, we offer the property for free, the non-profit takes care of operating expenses/damage. The non profit also owns the plates, and beds, and ovens, etc. so if we were ever to sell, or shut down, those items would be sold and the money would go back to the 501c3. Specifically to your question, there is a clause in our working document allowing the non profit to make improvements to the facility that benefit the study abroad program. We also signed a long term agreement so that the value of any such improvements would be realized over time. That's the direction we're going right now, but if the IRS tells us otherwise, we will of course comply. Of course, there is a very real possibility the property does not appreciate. Chateaux are not like other properties, hard to sell, and often the owner loses money (our previous owner said he lost hundreds of thousands, and I believe him). Best case, we can sell to the non-profit when it can afford it, then this conflict of interest can be avoided. But for now, the non-profit needs us.

Gosh if you could save up to $7000 on taxes annually, perhaps it should be a priority, although I wouldn't now how you could manage more than you do.

You can't avoid those taxes like 'Taxe d' habitation' and 'Taxe Foncière' once you are the owner of a real estate property in France. Like Rob answered my question on this toppic he mentioned around 10.000€ for both taxes together on yearly base... so even you are 'owner' it feels like you are renting from the government wich is a shame.... but thats the local system and most of the buyers (with foreign background) are not aware of this.... even you put the property in a kind of company like a 'SCI' you can't avoid them.
My claim to fame: is the student who ruined the perfect attendance streak. Sorry Rob 😅
