Although the personal and cultural significance of the song may be diminished when performed by a Taiwanese singer, it showcases Chen's magnificent vocals (even when she wasn't hitting high notes), nuanced grasp of emotions (even those she might not have experienced directly), and excellent articulation (even as a non-native speaker).
The song was a daring attempt for the 24-year-old, knowing it would never achieve Baez's impact and was likely destined for obscurity. However, the significance of the song for Chen's career and for the emerging Mandopop scene is not lost on us. This is one of our favorite Sarah Chen songs. It's a tragedy that circumstances led to her abandoning music after being devoted for so long. Whatever happened, changes need to come for Taiwan's music industry to support their best.
This song serves as a striking contrast to Chen's performance of the traditional Chinese folk song 'Four-Season Flowers,' released around the same time as 'Diamonds and Rust.' In that song, she sang in Chinese about the first love of a young woman who tried to both show and hide her feelings.
