I was a Crew Chief in Vietnam on a MAG-16 CH-37C. It was replaced by the CH-53. We had the last 8 CH-37's in operation in USMC. They were retired in 1967. One hell of an old helicopter, crude by today's standards and a challenge to keep in perfect shape. Did 210 Combat missions in old #6 and she never let me down ! SEMPER FI !

I work on the UK Merlin's which are fairly large. Think the King Stallion dwarfs it in comparison which is mental! 7 Blade main rotor with fold capability must take some setting up too. Respect to the maintenance techs that look after these things. The Pilots have the easy job.

As someone who worked on the ch53e, it’s crazy to think a bird we kept up for 40 years is just now getting replaced. That bird deserves two retirement plans

I was an 0311 in a helicopter company. The CH 53 was an awesome ride! 46 Sea Knight scared the crap out of me. Always seemed one bolt away from dropping out of the air. Thank you for keeping us in the air.

I have ridden in those huge birds a couple of times. Massive noisy beasts, but it does give you a feel of solidity you don’t get from smaller helicopters.

as a former CH53E airframer living near New River, i see them flying frequently. i just look up, smile, and think that i had a part in the longevity, and the sound is unmistakable. I'm going to miss my former nemesis when they're fully retired.

Nice! I was in the US NAVY stationed at HM-12 Squadron in Norfolk VA when the MH-53E was first delivered for sea trials and trials on the Mine Sweeping gear we had been using with the RH-53D, CH-53E's. Still remember the first one flying in painted out in matte black/gray with all the orange testing gear attached to it. I'm glad to see they kept the larger fuel sponsions (fuel tanks) of the MH-53E instead of the small outrigger wings with the external tanks like the CH-53's. I can for sure see the increased room inside and also talking with someone who is building these the increased lift and speed ability of the CH-53K has been achieved by using Kevlar and carbon fiber composite materials that make up the aircraft's hull.

I spent a lot of time getting in and out of the older ones back in the Mid 1970's They were and still are a BEAST, Semper Fi.

I was in the Marines in the mid 1970's at New River North Carolina. Newly trained in aircraft hydraulics. I ended up working with a CH-46 squadron, but My first helicopter ride after was on a CH-53 shortly after getting to New River. First thing I noticed as we were getting started was it seemed all the hydraulic fittings I could see were leaking. Just small drops of hydraulic fluid around the fittings really, but it kind of worried me. Once we were back down on the ground and the bird shut down I mentioned my concern to the crew chief. He just laughed and explained that the CH-53's ran their hydraulics pretty at pretty high pressures and they all leaked some. The only time anybody worried about it was when it stopped leaking.

I was in the Marines from 83-90 as a 0311. We called the 53 "The Flying Coffin". We absolutely hated seeing a 53 coming to the pickup. I hope and pray this thing is really Flight Worthy, because we lost a lot of good Marines back then from this Aircraft.

The military industrial complex is a black hole for money. Yet we have veterans that don't receive the care they need and we are hearing how this 1 helo is over 100 million $. Lockheed is ruled by govt contracts so they need to appease uncle sam to get the $$ whatever it takes while putting the interest of its people on the side. These managers are put there as "yes men" to advance an agenda.

Thank you for having a good and proper story on the H-53K. I work on this program and I recognize the footage from various test facilities we operate out of. As you noted the price tag is something that is trying to be lowered but developing, testing and certifying next generation technology does not come cheep. It takes a huge team of engineers/technicians/you name it all across the world. Big kudos to the USMC for recognizing this and investing in the future. Consider life-cycle cost, the grand kids of the first pilots to fly the H-53K will also be piloting the same bird.

Got that right! I was with VR-24/HC-4 when we transitioned from the Delta to the Echo WAY back in 1983...and those Super Stallions are still flying...I imagine these Kilos will be around just as long if not longer.

I was a 53E Crew Chief/Door gunner in the 80s at HMH-464, MCAS (H) New River. The E had an external lift capability of 32,000 lbs. The K is between 17-31K. Not sure I follow the math on this one. The Es rolled out in 1981 at a cost of $21M, so it’s time for a replacement for sure.

I was also a 53E Crew Chief/Door gunner in 1984 for HMH-464. I unfortunately was in the 53E that crashed on Camp Lejeune November 19 1984, killing the other Crew Chief, our Pilot and 4 Marines from the gun crew we were lifting that day.

I flew Gen Gray to the commissioning ceremony of the Wasp when I was at HMX, but never floated on one. LPH's and LHA's for me. I also retired in 2003.

The Wasp carried this Marine to fleet week from Norfolk, Va to Manhattan, NY in 2006 I believe it was. Nothing like riding a flat bottom. 👍🏻

If the CH-53 King Stallion can out perform the current CH-53 Echo than it is a must buy. The Ch-53 Echo's have served the Marine Corps over and beyond their designed capabilities. I expect any replacement helicopter to do the same. Every new aircraft has its own design problems that testing will identify such as the the F14, B52, C130, & its variants, SR-71 Black Bird, & the F35. Notice that the I did not list the F15 Strike Eagle, The F/A 18, The F22 Raptor, the C17 because they failed in performing their designed roles Especially the C17 which was to replace the venerable C130 aircraft. It was incapable of taking off & landing on short imporvised regular runways that the C130 can. I should also note that the C5 was a flop since the military didn't buy enough of the aircraft to replace the aging C140 heavy lift cargo plane.

I was a 120 lb Black Knight LSE onboard CVN-70, along came a CH-53E. We Flew H-3's and H-60 Aircraft and neither I nor My Squadron knew what to anticipate when I directed the Aircraft on Board. When the Pilot went into Power Assist and I was Blown across the Angle and Dropped by the Massive winds. Fun Fun Fun. I had a 250lb Chief Hold Me down when I directed the Launch. I know those Jar Head Pilots knew I was way too small for that job.

I was fortunate enough to work on this for a brief period at the beginning of 2018. Beast of a machine!

The Marine Corps gets full value from it's helicopters, which unlike Army choppers, must be able to operate equally well from land and shipboard bases. True, the CH-53K is a specialized piece of hardware, but the Marine Corps is a specialized striking force which requires unusual equipment like the Harrier to accomplish its mission.

Back in the late 70's the Super Stallion CH-53E was the new kid on the block. It was a better Helo than one it replaced just like the CH-53K King Stallion will be even better. Congratulations on the new modified bird.

I was a CH-53E crew member. I went in the Corps when they came in. They were a deadly bird... FOR US!!! They always were down and lost 19 of my Marines while I was serving from mechanical failure. Glad to see they FINALLY are replacing them.

Amazing. The K has twice the gross weight as the old D version (42K lbs.)

I'm far from an aviation engineer, but as a lowly metal fabricator and shadetree mechanic, who gawks at the marvel of flying machines, this thing is an awesome massive beast....a real tribute to the strength and shear/flex tolerances of modern metal alloys.

I think the best thing about it, it can carry two 463L pallets, which ensures easy transport between aircraft such as C-17 and C-5 to the CH-53K without tearing down the pallet!

I rode in the Echoes during the 80s and they were awesome. Can’t imagine what the K will do in the next thirty years!

The amazing blade flap of the M/R and the low roar signature of the massive T/R of the CH-53E is always awesome to hear. I live near the Kaneohe Marine Air Base in Hawaii. You would always hear the CH-53Es flying. I would like to see the Ks flying here too.

In the 1930's the Germans depended on high tech (for the time) expensive, highly capable weapons systems. They faced far cheaper, lower tech weapons systems of their enemies and lost, because their enemies could produce *MORE* weapons than they could. Personally, I worry that our weapons systems might be *TOO* good. They are very expensive, meaning we can't afford to deploy many of these weapons. And their loss in combat might be more than anyone can actually afford.

That's just it, we (the United States) CAN afford it. In 2019, the US military budget was 686 billion dollars, which was 3.4% of the US GDP. Hell Social Security was 1 trillion dollars, Medicare and Medicaid was 1.05 trillion..

Yea, the budgets are big, but if your budget is $686 billion and each fighter costs $1 billion, you can't build 686 fighters, because you are going to have many other things you need to spend money on. You can build far more, cheaper fighters and spend the money saved on training pilots better. Also, money paid to Social Security and other social programs is required. Unless you think people need some help should be left in the cold to starve and die. You aren't one of those "reduce the surplus population" people are you?

As a 0481 I actally loved the E. The external lifts were fun as hell.

Yeah Marines, the Venom, a Huey design proven but on steroids, the Viper, the Cobra design proven but on steroids, and the CH-53K a proven design with more muscle. The Osprey meets your airplane/rotorcraft requirements. A very excellent inventory of Helicopters. Amazingly, every A/C are two engined powered, except the CH-53E & K with 3 engines, where the #2 engine is neatly tucked behind the rotor system. Now that is awesomely designed. Sorry guys helicopters has always been my thing. It has always been, “How the heck you stick another engine into the CH-53?. Now with 7 blades and a canted massive tail rotor? Only Sikorsky can.

The A,D and Pavelow (AF) are 2 engined but the current USMC and Navy E's are both canted tail,3 engine, 7 bladed aircraft like the K.

Paid Chinese Spy I flew the MH and the CH and they were awesome. Although the MMH/FH were ridiculously expensive, our maintenance departments always kept them flying !

Damn Sikorsky has come along way over the years. I served in the 2nd MAW, MAG-26, HMH-461 back in the early 80's at New River MCAS Jax N.C. We had the CH-53 D "Sea Stallion" with the modified bat wings and the 650 gallon jettisonable fuel tanks. One A/C was equipped with a fuel probe. The 53 Echo "Super Stallion" was in test phase at Patuxent river in 1984 when i got out. Good solid design and one helluva work horse. We used to call em Shitters and would say if it didn't leak H-5606 hydraulic fluid don't fly in it cause it's probably depleted in one of your 3 hydraulic redundancy systems. Lol. Sure brings back memories! Semper Fi

I believe that’s medium lift. It replaced the USMCs CH46 Sea Knight. 53s are heavy lifting.

Rode a few miles in a 53 E while in the navy. Great bird with unbelievable capacity.

I remember working as a C-130h electro-environmental systems specialist at Dyess AFB in the 90's, when a CH-53 transient flew in, and needed some work on its refueling boom. Never worked on them before, but switches are switches. Simple switch replacement, and they were on their way....

And he told me that, “ pilots need flight hours, and some mite show up a lil bit hungover, so they will stick the CC in the left seat” I had no reason not to believe him, and I had just made NCO while at sea, as my mos , 0341/FO , and said, since I was a E4, I’d get close to the stick!! If anyone reads this, and I know different, drop a dime! Or a Sit-Rep for you non military speaking civilians!! Vet Dad from NJ!

I worked on MH-60/UH-60 Blackhawk radar displays at Lockheed around 2005. I didn't realize UTC sold Sikorsky to Lockheed in 2015 for $9B. It is sure paying off big time now.

And that tail rotor still scares the crap out of me. Never had any worries exiting from a CH-46, but the CH-53 is a whole new monster that if you don't pay attention, will leave your body in pieces on the field.

They reminded me of grasshoppers on steroids! I spent a good part of my years in the Marine Corps at New River Air Station with MABS-26 and attached to HMM-261 during a Med cruise in 73-74. I miss all those "flying birds" and all my Marine brothers! Semper Fi! Go AirWing...

nice video, and well produced. this is a nice airborne truck. kind of expensive, but seems to work ok.

I inspected the external cargo hook assemblies !! We make all three... forward, Aft, and center. When we test them under load, and release the hook, it sounds like a rifle going off and it shakes the floor.... it’s cool to be a small part of this amazing aircraft.... kinda extra cool for me ... I used to be in the USMC, way before crayons were issued.
