I know you were likely being sarcastic when you referenced visual astronomers (again) but you can actually see the Great Orion nebula through a scope, at least through my 12" DOB. The trapezium helps you to identify what you're looking at when roaming around the constellation Orion. I do both astrophotography and visual by the way. Both are amazing. When you can actually see things with you're naked eye through an eyepiece it is as cool, if not more, than when capturing photos of the amazing structures there are in space.

I've been fighting my CGX mount for a while now... PHD2 recommended I take 0.5 to 1.5s subs last night. Made the decision to tear it down and fix it. It's doing what yours is doing. I'll get new bearings belt and anything else I can think of. Grease, clean, and all that good stuff. Hope I don't break it a bit I have to throw away 2/3 of my data at the 20s now. I actually have CEM60 now, but I prefer the ergonomics of the CGX other than its f'ing heavy.

Since you are getting a new mount, with one belt off, doesn’t matter which one, because you need to do both, wiggle both pulley wheels in all directions to see if the shaft is lose. If it is you will need to ensure the pulley wheel is lose to the shaft or the shaft has worn down on the other end. That is where the shaft engages the the other gear. The metals used should have one as a more mailable material like brass and the other like the worm gear as possibly steel. The softer material will be the most likely to fail first, by design. Don’t know but hope this helps.

Just look close for pinion lateral movement that’s the key

Ok, a few comments on the belts. your problem with the RA is not the belts but the bushing on the output shaft of the gearbox. I noticed when you were putting the belt on I could see the gearbox cog moving up and down. this indicates the bushing has a elliptical runout worn in in to it. This wil cause the RA to have a almost cyclic spike caused as the cog turns it increases and decreases the tension in the belt. This is a known problem with the CGX/CGXL. The bushings wear out from too much tension on the belts. On the other hand, if you have less tension in the bets you have way too much BL. Fortunately, there is a permanent fix and why Celestron did not do this in the first place is beyond me. You can replace the bushings with high precision bearings(inexspensive)(easy to do) and keep the proper belt tension. In fact, I run mine slightly tighter to remove al BL from the belts. See CN forum on this subject. Also Ed Thomas from DSP has the bearings. I highly recommend this upgrade. My mount delivers great guiding and round stars now.

Hey Dylan nice work on the belt swap. When you were slewing, I noticed your belt still was pretty slack at the 4:54-4:57 mark. I did the belt mod to my old NEQ6 Pro and I had to make sure there was no slack when changing directions otherwise I had massive backlash isues in PhD. Hopefully that's all it is for your CGX, there should be an adjustment screw near the motor somewhere that you can unscrew a bit, then use a flat blade screwdriver to lever the motor out to create tension and then do the locking screw back up

I don't have a CGX but I have done full teardown/rebuilds on two of its predecessor and smaller mounts, the Advanced GT. That one is a direct drive rather than a belt drive. Certainly the belts are a good candidate to go after, and i'm thinking you were having some backlash issues as well which also points at the belts and should be improved. After that there are a couple of clues you might consider. It seems like the RA error is cyclical. Can you figure the scope's angular travel through RA from peak to peak on the errors? Then with the covers off, move the scope through the same shift and watch components to see if there is an element that moves through a full or half rotation over that pointing shift. Identifying that component narrows down the most likely parts. 2nd, from the look of it, I suspect that the really large offset to start is stiction in one of the bearings. Once moving it gets better but there is still a spot where it's worse. This could be the same bearing surface that's causing the guide errors, but it's hard to say for sure. You could have a main bearing with stiction and another causing cyclic RA error. In any case, you will need redo all PE training, so record what might be saved and then reset everything so you are starting fresh. I'd suggest tearing down cleaning and relubricating the mount and pay particular attention to any thin shims on bearing surfaces, but that's just me. Just a bit of a dry spot or dirt in one of those can do all this, or perhaps just wear and thinning out of the grease through hot and cold cycles.

Dylan, it sounds like you've already got a new mount on the way but your problem wasn't with the belts. I had the same issue but was fortunate enough to be so close to Celestron that I was able to ship mine to them for repairs. The problem is the belt was too tight and it wore out the bushings in the motor shaft that the pulley is attached to. If you grab the pulley and wiggle it and it moves like mine do in this video, that's the problem. Advance to 01:50 to get past my rambling. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKeDqbCHh5nNodI.html

No one noticed he did not tighten those belts! Loosen those three screws securing the motor and turn the small hex screw to get the belts ringing! U can see the motor pulley turn before worm gear axel pulley starts turning. Great content!

  • 3 жыл бұрын

As I dug deeper in this rabbit hole of eq mount I found out that there is just bushings instead of good old ballbearings in the gearing for the belt. So better to check for worn down belt drive axel bushings before tightening belts. Normally u would have the belt tight enoigh so there is no play. But unfortunately there is a design flaw in the reduction gear on the motor.. bushing instead of bearing.. And those are not even cheap mounts.

He followed suggestions from the company that provides the Hypertune service that they recommend before sending the mount head to them for service. Easier said than done as there’s a mount in the way and it’s basically flooding right now (again!) but it should just be the dome diameter minus 2*column width. Ideally just draw a perfect circle on the ground (eg with a piece of string from the middle) and then place the walls around that so the dome doesn’t become an oblong.

Hi Dylan, sorry to hear about your CGX problem, but I may have a few things you can try to solve this. I apologise if this seems long winded, but its not easy to say in a few words. Though, it might help save some money! I used to work as an equipment engineer on robotic manufacturing equipment. We tried hard to avoid using belts as slackening in belt tension is a known issue. We preferred direct gear drive systems if at all possible. I'm disappointed Celestron chose this drive method. Usual causes for this were belt stretch, or slippage between the motor and idler wheel (gear wheel opposite the motor). Very high belt tension will try to pull the motor and idler together like an elastic band. In equipment like the CGX, this only needs to sub mm distances before the effects show up in PHD. The slippage can happen because of screws not be tight enough or mechanical wear. First thing is to ask Celestron for the specs on the belt tension and their procedure for setting belt tension. This is usually (in my experience) specified as a weight, kg, lbs, whatever. It can also be specified as the distance between the belt sides for a given amount of applied weight. Usually it is not a difficult procedure, it usually involves loosening the motor or idler bolts. Often there will be tension adjust bolt you release to enable a quick and safe belt replacement. Sliding belts over motor / idler combination without releasing their locking screws is not ideal...this can stretch the belt but also risks moving the motor idler distance or worse still warping the motor idler shaft & bearings (that's extreme, but I've seen it happen). Sorry if this seems like criticism...its not! My professional experience with these types of drive systems comes with a victim impact statement :). This is why I hate belt drives for this kind of application. I can spout for ages on this, but you all have lives to lead. But if you want more information, feel free to mail me on davefottrell@gmail.com. Clear skies everyone!!

Dylan I bet you $1’000 that all you need to do to fix that cgx is adjust the tension of new belt! I could clearly see in vid the new belt was tight at bottom but loose at the top! You were saying “oh this looks pretty tight” but I could clearly see the top of belt was loose. Finally, in practice, you could have simply adjusted the tension of old belt with exact same adjustments. All the above assumes it is actually possible to adjust tension by loosening then pulling apart the two belt wheels/cogs then tightening up again before you release them from your grip? 👍Wes, Liverpool, UK.

NovaDawnAstrophotography@ My GCX mount must be made on Monday morning and late Friday. Battled with poor tracking now for 2 years and found out that my mount is allergic to temperature change especially for cold weather. Plus one part of the sky my gear mesh is so loose that PHD2 doesn't get any response and another area is so tight that gears are hopping. All this with the same settings and the mount has been in service at Celestron. If the outside temperature drops down under 65 F (18C) gear mesh needs to be tuned maybe twice on one night and if the temperature goes under 32F (0 C) it's time to pack up. Now, this GCX is under "lemon" status, and a 10micron mount is on the way. Celestron GCX mount quality is very poor. If you test 10 GCX mounts 2-3 are "good", 3 are about that level that people can tolerate them, and the rest of them is pure junk like my mount.

Hay Dylan i was watching how the belt was acting after you put the new belt on....all belt drives have what is called tensioner...it would be a small bolt or screw...the screw type would move in a slot with a bolt tensioner...likely this would be the type....don't worry you can't mess it up....i saw that the new belt had a lot of ....for a better word....slack and this would cause the problem you where experiencing...and a lot of backlash...the fact that this is a new belt it may work better but it will eventually start acting up.

I think the CGX over all is an okay mount, but it does have its quirks and mechanical hangups. I'm adjusting gear mesh every few months due to weather and humidity changes. I don't think thats a great selling feature. Lol. This summer I'm going to pull it apart and go through the entire thing. I sent mine back to Celestron due to the RA being sloppy...after being 3 months old for warranty. (Not happy after spending $3000 CDN on a new mount that shit the bed after 100 hours of use lol.) I'm a millwright so its fun to tinker and trouble shoot. I hope you can get it back to where you would like it again operationally but I can tell you're getting frustrated with it. Do you think its been ran with too much weight? Your 11" RASA and counter weights? Wore the ring gear teeth down?
