I really loved this. what a nice message! you really can't live life by numbers or follow a recipe or a course outline for life. you just have to love every moment of it to really understand what YOUR life is all about because ultimately, you have to find your own meaning of life which no book can tell you. But that's just the _answer_ to life, the universe, and everything. It's not the _meaning_ of life. The whole thing is about knowing the question when seeking answers. Overused references are one thing, but misusing overused references... Tsk.

While this last person is correct within the context of the original stories, I read this thing about how 42 in ASCII coding (I may have spelled that wrong) in binary corresponds to an asterisk, a character which can be used as a placeholder for anything-like using x in algebra as a placeholder for any number. So the meaning of life is 42, which is 10101, which is *, and * can be whatever you want it to be. The meaning of life is what you make of it. Don’t know if this is what Douglas Adams has in mind when he wrote it, but I thought it was pretty interesting-and to be honest, pretty in line with the philosophy of the rest of the series. Either way, I don’t think whether or not the author intended a specific interpretation diminishes what value you assign to a work of art/literature. I mean, once you put a piece of art out there, it takes on a life of its own, and you can’t really expect to control people’s reactions to it. We’re all entitled to our own opinions, and just because one opinion is more standard than others does not make it true. I’m getting off topic. Anyway. The books are great, 42 is great, other people’s opinions are great. The end.
