Tanya Powell grew up in Cabrini-Green, Chicago’s notorious housing project known for its gang violence, drug-dealing and racial strife. When her 17-year-old brother died after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting, her father said, “Enough is enough.” And the family moved to Milwaukee to start anew.
Tanya went to high school in Milwaukee, but never graduated. And with little money, college had never been part of the picture.
Tanya found herself seeking assistance.
Her life has drastically changed since she began washing dishes here in 1996. Her strong work ethic was noticed, and she quickly moved up the ranks.
