Cesar Chavez Used The Term "Wetbacks" and "Illegals" to Describe Migrant Workers from Mexico

KQED News report from September 25th 1972 featuring an interview with Cesar Chavez, in which he explains that legitimate strikes by agricultural workers can always be broken by employers bringing in illegal labor from Mexico. He goes on to state that the best way for agricultural workers to secure collective bargaining rights is by organizing a boycott of farm products.

Illegal immigration effects Hispanic’s jobs. Ceaser Chávez understood this. Back in the 70’s illegal immigrants were working more for less in the fields. Which put the legal immigrants out of work who were also working in the fields. The Illegal immigrants from Mexico were literally taking their own people’s jobs who were legal. As a Mexican-American(first generation) people need to come in legally.

The point that he was making is that “illegal” immigrants were not helping his cause. Because while Chavez and Chicano farm workers were in strike due to unfair labor laws, farm owners were just hiring illegal immigrants who because of their illegal status were willing to endure anything at a chance to survive. Once those illegal immigrants want better wages/conditions, then it’s, “oh time for some new ‘illegals!’ ” and the cycle continues. That he used terms that are derogatory to illegal immigrants was ignorant on his part and I do not excuse/condone that. But I believe that ultimately Chicanos want fair laws for all our people legal and “illegal”. That’s why you have so many Chicano activists demanding immigration reform. After all, we are the voices for our immigrant parents.

Now come in more mexicans ,who aren't joining his union or helping his cause and are doing the exact opposite by accepting lower wages and continuing the harsh conditions . If you want to celebrate your roots go ahead but don't be ignorant to the fact that 2nd generation and forth are now AMERICANS who have better opportunities but still have to contend with a continuing influx of immigrants that can replace workers in entry level fields. Most ppl complain about low wages and aren't going to college now to compete against a migrant worker willing to work for less pay at minimal skill job. Etc warehouse and factory jobs, delivery. people don't understand history. these terms weren't considered as derogatory as they are now, ya people didn't like them but it wasn't until the mid to late 80's when people started talking about things being PC (politically correct). Also, laborers used to be able to come for 6 months from Mexico every year. They didn't need a green card, they got visas to work but then all of a sudden people were like, oh they took our jobs, the migrant workers were going home after 6 months, they'd come and work during harvest season and take their earnings home. we didn't have such an illegal problem before that, ya people came here but they didn't stay typically. they worked and left. now they don't get those visas to work and you know white people (I'm white I can say this) aren't going to do this type of work full time anymore! if we let them come on migrant work visas again and they go home for half the year it would make it easier for them, cheaper as well, many of the people who come here illegally pay thousands of dollars to a coyote to help them get here, they're not going to do that to just come for 6 months, but if they were allowed to come for 6 months legally, work and come back the next year, you'd see a drop in the BS people want a wall to stop. but no one likes study history so we're going to keep doing whatever :(

Lawl! There is no job that Americans don't want. Illegals came in and replaced Americans and depressed wages. When someone can hire an illegal for a fraction of your pay and no benefits wtf do you think happens to the Americans who were doing those jobs? Grow a brain. Americans didn't suddenly decide they didn't want that work anymore it was stolen from them.

If a teacher showed this in their classroom today, especially in liberal states, they’d probably be fired. No teacher in their right mind should want to teach history in U.S.public K-12 schools. This just shows how both sides are trying to rewrite history. 😂
