Cervix dilation symptoms: What does cervical dilation feel like and how to check if you are dilating

Do you want to reliably find out if and how much your cervix is dilated? If so, you are going to find the answers in this video! In this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy and Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, show you exactly how to find out if you are dilated and even how much you are dilated.
First, they explain the cervix dilation symptoms to help you understand how it looks and feels like when your cervix is dilating.
Next, they explain the “Purple Line Method” which can give you a rough idea if and how much you are dilated. The purple line is a purplish or brownish line which extends from a woman’s anus upwards to the top of the cleft between her buttocks. They explain why your body may develop a purple line and how it could help you find out if your cervix is dilated.
Finally, they also explain how to check yourself if your cervix is dilated or not. This is a much more reliable method than the purple line (if you do it the right way). Plus, it can also tell you pretty accurately, how much you are dilated.
Please note: this video is an updated video based on the “Cervix Dilation Symptoms” video which they posted in 2021. The update includes what they have learned over the past year regarding the accuracy of the purple line. And it also includes another but more accurate approach on how to find out if and how much you are dilated.
Afterwards, they explain two methods in order to help you tell yourself if you are dilated. In fact, these two methods can even give you a rough idea about how much you are dilated. They are called “the Purple Line” and “the Fundus Theory”. While the first approach is based on scientific research (sources see below), the second approach is not scientific at all. However, it is used by many midwives and doulas to help a woman find out if she is dilating and also, how much she is dilated.

    Thanks so much for watching this video! 😊 This is an updated version of our video about cervix dilation symptoms and the purple line that we posted in 2021. We talk about the same cervix dilation symptoms. However, we updated the information on the purple line and how accurate it is to estimate your cervical dilation. And then we also show you a more reliable way to tell, if and you much you are dilated.

    Hi there 😘, first of all, thanks SO MUCH for your lovely feedback! We are very happy to hear that you find our videos helpful!! 😘😘 Regarding your case: Did your doctor tell you anything about your cervix? Is it soft/effaced/dilated? Also, do you know if your baby is engaged? Sometimes, it is emotions that can prevent labor from starting, particularly fear and anxiety. So, that could be the reason too. In fact, we just recorded a video about that 2 hours ago, which we will publish in 2 days... Looking forward to your reply!

    I really appreciate your reply. Actually after he did the sweeping, he mentioned that I was 1 cm already. He didn’t tell me anything about effacement, engagement, or anything about my cervix and baby. He just told me he will do sweeping every week after that. I will have another check up tomorrow and will keep you updated. I am looking forward to that video you’ll be soon uploading. Very informative videos, keep it up! Hi there 😊, no worries at all! 😊 The thing is that most people over-emphasize dilation! But the reality is that your contractions will take care of your dilation, no matter if you have been dilated before labor starts or not. So, you really don't need to worry about that! If you feel lightening crotches, it normally means that baby is moving further down the pelvis. As a result, baby will put more pressure on the cervix. And that too will cause your cervix to dilate eventually. In brief: all good! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😘, good question! Unfortunately, there is no sign other than green/black discharge. It's also always a good ideal to make sure you regularly feel your baby in your womb (i.e. baby is supposed to be active regularly). However, even if your baby is less active and you see a doctor for a checkup, it is difficult to say from that, that your baby passed meconium... ☹️

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😘, if a cervix is already THAT delated at 34 weeks, there is a risk of a preterm delivery. In that case, it is important that your provider keeps observing your case and, if required, do everything possible that you don't go into labor. Also, they are most likely gonna tell you to stay in bed and avoid anything that may make your cervix dilate even further, such as exercises. We hope this helps! We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi I'm going to be watching all your videos. I'm 36+3 days but my doctors said he wouldn't do a cervix exam until 39+ weeks any idea why this would be? I know a lot of women don't want it but I do because I want to know.

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, good question! We know that doctors have their preferences. We know some doctors who would do cervical exams in both, week 36 and week 39. And then others who only do them when you are close to your due date. Most of the times, they argue that the status of your cervix in week 39 is more relevant than in week 36 in order to assess the body's "readiness" to go into labor. Although technically, they are right, we think a woman should have the right to make her own decision if she wants to have an exam or not (and when)... Unfortunately, that's all we can say about it.... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! 😊 Unfortunately, whether or not you are at risk of preterm labor is something that only your doctor can tell you because it does not only depend on your cervix but also on other factors. Still, in general, whenever there is a risk of preterm labor, the only thing you can do really is bedrest! However, we do hope that - if your doctor indeed believes that you are at risk of preterm labor - that she gives you clear instructions on what to do (again, depending on your pregnancy case...) • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there Hannah 😊, yes, unfortunately, this can happen! It's hard to say why it happens but it's nothing to worry about. Keep in mind that the biggest part of your cervical dilation can only happen with the help of contractions. Also, oftentimes, the baby is just trying to find a better position in your womb. And if baby's head then puts more pressure on your cervix, it will help to further dilate it... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, thanks a lot for sharing this with us! 😊 Unfortunately, the purple line theory is only based on statistical values. And the correlation between the length of the line and the dilation is not perfect. As a result, as always when it comes to statistics, there will be exceptions. In other words, the purple line theory does not apply to every woman. It's the usual problem we have in science. For example: if a study finds that 80% of women have a softer cervix after eating dates, that's great! But it also means that 20% of women will have no effect whatsoever... Hi there 😊, thanks so much for following our videos! It is much appreciated!! 😘 Also, congratulations on your second pregnancy!! 😊 Regarding your question: Please do not worry about dilation and fluid levels right now! These are topics which you can start to think about once you are 30 weeks pregnant. For now, it would be great if you could do regular exercising (IF you are allowed to do so). But it does not need to be anything fancy. A regular walk 3-4 times per week would already be great. Also, make sure that your baby receives all the nutrients that baby needs.... We explain how in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/doKVsLhpp5yypcY.html We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, NORMALLY, this is nothing to worry about. Warning signs can be if your discharge is transparent or takes on another color, like green/black. OR: if you believe it's bleeding. But white discharge is normally nothing to be worried about. However, as always, we recommend talking with your provider if there is anything that you believe is not right, even when it turns out to be totally normal... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi guys, thank you for the Video. Today I am in 40+1 weeks but not yet dialated. Today doctor told I am only 1 finger can be inserted, that means only 1 cm opened may be because of mucus plug came out. but cervix not yet started opening but its soft now. Head is also not fixed but it is near the cervix. I am in Germany and here they don't induce the labor so easily in week 40. Have to wait still 9 more days and then need an appointment for inducing. I am in a worry about delayed birth since there are risks that involved w.r.t. Baby e.g. Meconium. My first baby was c-section and now after 6 years I am trying for VBAC. Do u have some Tips that I can do anything for starting the labor without medicine. Thanks in advance.

    Hi there 😊, personally, we are BIG fans of letting labor start on its own. This gives baby so much more time to develop. Also, on average, there is no need to be worried about meconium. Only a small percentage passes meconium in the womb. And an ever smaller percentage inhales that meconium so that it can become a problem. So, please do not be afraid of it! Also, the German health care system is really great! You should be in good hands, particularly in the unlikely case that your baby does pass meconium in your womb... But here are some things that might help you speed up the process: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html ;-) We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️
