CERN Technical Student Selection Experience

I was miraculously selected as a #TechnicalStudent at #CERN in Geneva, #Switzerland for a 14 month internship. This is a short video that covers the important dates during the selection procedure, the forms, questions, information about my #resume and #letterOfReccomendations etc.
If you have any other questions / video requests please let me know down in the comments section below and I'll try my best to answer them to the best of my capability.

Yes, even in my mind, CERN was something out of the future for me, and in many ways it is and an in many ways it is also very old school, still using pretty old technology and still using applications written more than 2 decades ago. But all in all it was a life changing experience and I am pretty grateful to get the opportunity to work there. Good luck to you as well 👍

But i do have some research experince and I am a MITACS scholar too :) I just wanted to know if you faced any issues while starting off at CERN with regard to technical knowledge, because people I've seen who get selected have gigantic CVs, was it hard to keep up?

I was thrown straight into the code and yes there was a very steep learning curve and yes I did struggle initially. Having said that irrespective of where I would've worked, CERN or not, it would've been a struggle because that is absolutely normal. Imposter syndrome is also totally normal. Everyone has to start from zero, and start from somewhere eventually. And no matter what company you join you will initially be a junior developer and it will take some time to get to know the system etc. But, wherever you start working, the people there will know that you are a junior dev or new to development and will understand when you make mistakes and will also guide you. I think that I received a lot of guidance and learnt a lot, and there are many young people at CERN. I don't think everyone is an expert. There are probably many people who feel like you do, it's normal.

Geneva or Switzerland in general isnt a very young place. All shops and markets close at 6:30 or 7 sharp. Even the airport closes around 10:30-11ish at night so its very much like a village in a sense and not a very hip hop party place. Me, I am bit of an introvert so honestly I don't mind the calm, but having said that, there are many young people working at CERN and also from the UN. The town of Saint Genis Pouilly is basically a CERN town and there are plenty of activities happening all the time. As for the work life balance, IMO its pretty great, but I am more from a CS background, and I have heard about physicists an scientists pulling an all nighter as well. But overall, I think its a very good balance and yes it is enjoyable 🙂

In the mail, I was asked this: To prepare for this interview, we will be asking you a few questions, broadly about: yourself, a project you’re proud of and why, your technical/administrative strengths, your motivation as well as what your ideal work environment looks like and what you hope to gain from this experience. firstly, im shocked that i even got shortlisted(?) im panicking and don't know how to prepare for these basic questions. i dont really have a 100% complete project either

Hi, do you think exam grades are very important? I'm in my third year of electronic engineering (first year out of course) and I would really like to apply for an internship as a technical student at CERN but I'm afraid that because of my path it will be limited. I've had some family problems and I've had to work, all of which is slowing down my degree. I would like to use the internship at CERN as a three-year degree thesis, do you think it's possible? I thank you

I don't think that exam grades matter a lot. My CGPA was 8.1/8.2 when I applied to CERN, nothing stellar. So, I don't think grades matter a lot. If you are selected then yes you can do coursework/thesis while you're at CERN.

well, first things first if you're from Bangladesh. I'm sorry but you can't apply for the technical student or fellowship program, as only people from member states or associate member states can apply. having said that you can apply for short term internship program, summer internship and CERN openlab. As for skills, i highly recommend becoming proficient in a modern programming language like Java/C#/Python/C++ etc. I would highly recommend Java (just a personal preference). Focus on core cs; data structures, algorithms etc. and make your fundamentals strong. Any internship that you can find will be good. also there's not just one path that leads to CERN, everyone can have a different skill set and abilities, what worked for me doesn't have to work for you. And even if you dont get into CERN. if your fundamentals are strong you'll get into somewhere. Hope that helps :)

What kind of prospects would a BSc Computer Science & Mathematics student hope for considering I have a first average in my first year. Generally consider myself an aspiring scientist with a hint of imposter syndrome 😂. I am looking for some advice. I have my second year of my degree still to go before my placement year and thus I’m the stage of searching for possibilities. How early should I apply if I were to start next year? Is this even feasible? Would I need to learn another language? What is living in Geneva like, is it expensive, does the cern allowance of ≈ 3319 Swiss Franc cover living and accommodation?

  • @AnishLearnsToCode

Hey Man ! You have asked a lot of questions. yes the stipend that CERN gives to Technical and admin students is more than enough to live very well in the region and also save some money. Yes, you can apply for the Tech and admin student program as a B. Sc student, but I think that the Tech student will be better suited than the admin student program. As for the selection, I can't say who will and won't be selected. You will just have to apply and see. CERN has 2 official languages, i.e. English and French so if you know any one of these, you are fine. You don't need to learn French to work at CERN, but if you know some french that's definitely a plus. You can see application dates/deadlines on cern careers website.

Other courses but having a certificate to actually prove that you have taken them would be nice otherwise it will just be a long list of corses that you are claiming to have done without any proof. Having said that, having a long list of courses on your resume isn't the best. Your CV should be more focussed with just a list of the most important courses you have taken. and then it can also contain projects, past internships, experiences etc. Just courses isn't pretty great.
