CERN Alumni Third Collisions

#CERNalumni came together on the weekend of 9-11 February for a major reunion event at CERN’s new Science Gateway. Held at the start of CERN’s 70th-anniversary year, the event provided a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what makes #CERN such a special place: you and all the others who have contributed in many #diverse ways! #CERN70

Fundamental Physics Fundamental physics is the study of the basic principles and laws that govern the natural world. It encompasses various fields, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity. Why Matter Can't Travel at Light Speed or Faster The restriction on matter traveling at or above the speed of light is primarily derived from Einstein's theory of relativity. Here are the key points: Relativity and Mass-Energy Equivalence: According to Einstein's famous equation 𝐸 = 𝑚 𝑐 2 E=mc 2 , energy (E) and mass (m) are equivalent. As an object moves faster, its kinetic energy increases, and so does its relativistic mass (the mass an object appears to have when moving). Infinite Energy Requirement: As an object approaches the speed of light, its relativistic mass increases exponentially. To accelerate an object to the speed of light, you would need an infinite amount of energy, which is impossible. Time Dilation and Length Contraction: At speeds close to the speed of light, time for the moving object slows down relative to a stationary observer (time dilation), and lengths contract along the direction of motion (length contraction). These effects become infinite at the speed of light, leading to paradoxes and undefined states. Speed of Light as a Universal Speed Limit: The speed of light (approximately 299,792 kilometers per second) in a vacuum is the universal speed limit according to relativity. No information or matter can travel faster than this speed without violating the principles of causality (cause and effect). Why We Can't Open Portals The idea of opening portals, often seen in science fiction, involves creating a shortcut or bridge between two distant points in space or even between different dimensions. Here's why this is currently not feasible: Violating Relativity: Creating a portal implies instant travel or communication, which would require faster-than-light travel or information transfer. This would violate relativity and causality principles. Exotic Matter and Energy Requirements: Theoretical constructs like wormholes (a type of portal) require "exotic matter" with negative energy density to stabilize them. Such matter has not been observed, and its creation and control pose enormous technological challenges. Quantum Mechanics and Stability: Even if a portal or wormhole could be created, quantum effects and fluctuations could render it unstable, potentially collapsing or causing destructive phenomena. Technological Limitations: The engineering and energy requirements to manipulate spacetime on the scale needed to create a portal are far beyond our current technological capabilities. We lack the tools, materials, and understanding to even begin such an endeavor. In summary, the limitations on traveling at the speed of light and the impossibility of opening portals are deeply rooted in the fundamental laws of physics, particularly Einstein's theory of relativity and our current understanding of quantum mechanics. These laws establish constraints that define the behavior of matter and energy in our universe.
