Once it releases I'd love to see 'The Spiffing Brit' show how 'Century of Steam is a Perfectly Balanced Game' and then proceeds to breaks it.

19:15, I can remember playing the demo at night and there was this weird UFO that appeared on the horizon. Took me a moment, but it was the lights on the ship out on the water. Neat effect!
Gosh every little piece of detail, like the overflow with the firing controls, gosh it's a thing of beauty 👌

What diff with derail valley ?
@WasatchWind
8 ай бұрын
@@elmsroth8850 What's the difference with Derail Valley? I haven't played DV, but my understanding is that it's equipment is based off of Eastern Europe designs - while Century of Steam is American narrow gauge. Derail Valley also doesn't let you place your own track, which is probably the biggest difference gameplay speaking.
26:10 - finally a good bell! I feel like whistles get all the love in train sims, but there's something great about a good bell in irl railfanning. This just sounds way better than most you hear in train games, where it's just the same exact audio file played over and over, a complete afterthought.
@dhxl

I hate bells since I played MSTS 😒. I don't understand why people do like them 🤷♂. I wish American locomotives used whistles as European do.
@SubparRobotWars
8 ай бұрын
@dhxl good, you're meant to hate the sound of a bell. Its an unnatural made sound and thus you will notice it and where it came from. Thus its great on a locomotive, as a warning device. Steam locos can be eerily quiet moving about, so a bell is a good "hey im coming through here" sound that won't blow your ears out with decibels that the whistle will do
@dhxl
8 ай бұрын
@@SubparRobotWars, I disagree simply because of the European practice. Europeans somehow survived age of steam without annoying bells. Now they have a horn and a whistle. Horns for danger and warnings, whistles are for attention signals. No annoying bells and it's pleasant to hear them. And it must a be common sense to look around when you cross tracks. From time to time I cross tracks, where trains may move on speeds up to 160 km/h and in such a case bells won't help. Just look to the left, look to the right and go or stay.
@SteamIsntKing

@@dhxlWell thats europe, not the U.S, like the other guy said its used as a warning, to alert the train is moving, or coming atleast. that wish will never come true unfortunately, and bells will continue to stay on steam locomotives

22:11 - thanks for answering my question. Definitely agree, it sounds great at slow speed, especially the initial start. At high speed however, it starts to become a bit garbled, more like a boiling pot of water than a steam locomotive. But I wish you luck as you tackle this challenge, so much of the sound design is already really well done.
This is looking amazing you guys. I know that you guys are THE narrow gauge people, but down the road adding standard gauge steam locomotives would be awesome.. Even if you have more knowledge on narrow gauge trains this game engine just has too much potential to not expand outside of narrow gauge. I hope "we love big choo choo's" means what I think it means. Looks lovely once again.

"Nuanced little features" just being able to sit in the cab and properly see out the window of a 3ft gauge engine is amazing enough for me you have no idea.
Hearing there will be articulateds made my day!
“Get back in the the cab before you die position 🤣 That IC 3 chime at 26:00 is awesome! Also did I just hear an individual chime at the start?!
This is a very huge project, i'm not sure everyone gets that yet. I hope when you guys release it it's in working condition and it don't get rushed last minute because of financial problems like other small studios with big projects. Looking good so for so keep up the good work 👏 👍.
Excellent Work Mark and the rest of the team. I am looking forward to playing this. Having some DV vibes here when things go wrong would be great too!
OMG you got to my question, thanks a bunch for the answer! - looks like i need to hit the books, on the oil burners, building a steampunk transportation game in my spare time where oil burners is deffinatly planed and i get a lot of my knowledge from you and the gang, so figured i would ask here first :D Thanks for the update on the century of steam, looking forward for when it will be in our hands :)
The cars sprinkled around are so beautiful, and I get the urge to drive them around just as much as I wanna drive the trains around
While simply an idea, the possibility of track section houses on a large multiplayer servers with groups of players fixing rails, ties and so on is pretty amusing and interesting.
Looking great guys! Can't wait to see more of this!
Your remarks at 19:47 Make me extremely happy, I've been struggling with That eerie feeling for so many train games and this game is going to be a godsend to that.
I've liked trains since I was a kid, and this game seems to be getting really interesting
I’d love to see the Kansas Central Railroad finally get attention. I didn’t even know of its existence until last fall, and I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life (and not very far from where it ran). It was a 150 mile narrow gauge railroad across the Midlands and Flint Hills of northeast Kansas, with a near constant up and down 1.5% track profile
11:13 HAH! I didn't expect to see the whole lead truck disconnected from the locomotive! Oh, what fun. Looking absolutely incredible, love the work you guys are doing!
First off: Patreon questions asked at: 0:38 and 10:32 down below. 0:18 I just joined... I simply had to :) Now the real question is: So where do we ask questions on Patreon that you'll take for these videos? Simply just anywhere? Even here as long as the video isn't visible for all? 0:38 _First patreon question:_ How many patreons does it take to get you a pop filter for your mike? XD (seriously, you should absolutely get one!) 1:21 The gauges aren't that easy to read, at least in that camera angle... and I guess they deserve to be rounder! :) 2:09 LOL! Those memes on the Derail Valley ES&D liveries really got ya! 9:41 You can't discuss things that didn't happen... it is fine! ;) 10:32 In VR as well, at least kinda. Would throw that in as my _second patreon question:_ Will it support VR? If not at the beginning, at a later point? 11:11 Is that a Kenosha happening without the Smells Of Kenosha playing? XD 11:50 I guess he meant that it does move and just doesn't pop and hover static where it came out of the stack. Great to have all the physics have an effect on it! 12:08 Just another Kenosha :) - and I love all theose red barrels you placed on the map for absolutely no apparent reason ;) 18:53 lol. This is fine. 23:50 What a question! Oh so very hype. Also super glad we'll be able to just focus on driving and not have to worry about firing, as that might as well be magic to me c:
19:20 "Anything to make the environment feel more lively." Like, for example, the possibility of livestock wandering on to the rails and potentially getting clobbered by the train?
My major worry was that we weren't going to get track laying. I am now infinitely happy my fears have been stomped. So excited to get my hands on this.
Having a starting line connect to an industry, but still letting you bild track would be nice. I enjoyed RRO, but my first experience was very disappointing when I had to fight with bilding track for 3 hours before I was connected to the saw mill and logging camp and could actually run my first train.
@WasatchWind
9 ай бұрын
The youtuber SteR made this point as well with his hardcore maps, that unnamed railroad game really drags early on because you have to lay a bunch of track before you can do any actual running of trains.
Thank you very much for the reply.
This looks so cool
I would love the ability just to lean left and right to see the gauge or stick my head out the window. More immersive that way. Looking great though
Looks great
100/10 Cant wait! By the way: will we be able to upgrade track & rolling stock infastructure? Like replacing link & pin couplers with knuckles, (or even split knucles), giving rolling stock roller bearings, replacing stub switches with point switches, or replacing a wooden bridge with an iron one? (This is totally not because I hate stub switches)
I'm a mechanic so hearing maintenance due to wear and tear is simulated is so exciting.
I love the derailment at the end, the way the bogie was the only thing that stayed on track.
I'm excited to learn firing on locomotives. I was a Marine Engineer for a short period of time before changing career paths, and also went to school for power engineering. So I am very experienced with Marine and Stationary boilers, but locomotive boilers are a different beast and I think it will be a fun challenge to learn the unique characteristics of mobile boilers, such as steam injectors. All the boilers I have worked with have separate pumps for basically everything, since space isn't a concern for them.
Congratulations on what you have done so far, it looks like this game will be amazing. It's not even released yet and you are years (maybe decades) ahead of RRO and the anticipation to even play a beta is through the roof. I love that you plan to offer maps with lines that are laid already with options to buy more trackage through progression or for those that wish to they can lay the track themselves, I enjoy planning/laying out lines but would rather switch and run trains. If its not been considered or suggested, maybe having a togglable switch list that they player can create themselves and/or that the game can generate can be included? It would be helpful to have it in game rather then have to alt/tab out of the game to a googledoc or write it down.
I can’t wait for century of steam!!!
Hearing "hey guys it's Mark" instead of "Hey guys it's Hyce" was kind've astonishing and weird. This looks so amazing so far keep up the amazing work, looking forward to this!

@@WasatchWind IDK, I feel like it would almost be the opposite. The lifetime of customizations on a modern engine is shorter relatively speaking than the lifetime of customizations than the engine they showed off in the Patreon video just due to time released. A K-28 for example was first built in 1923 meaning they only have 46 years of operation covered by the game era and they were locomotives only bought by a few railroads. The 2-8-0's they keep showing in the customization trailer are a roughly 1870s design meaning that is roughly 100 years of customizations and variations to track, many variants of which might not have been photographed and were bought by many railroads. The one thing that might be harder on a more modern engine is simulating the superheating. Superheated steam has a different "characteristic" to it in how it performs than saturated steam does and if they want to capture that detail then a superheated engine needs to have that fine difference in performance. It is not a huge difference, but enough of a tweak under the game's hood it might warrant some finer tuning before it is ready for the big time.
I ow the detail in this game is unreal I cannot wait to play it from the trains the mountains the landscape the sounds the music everything is so good I’m so exited keep up the good work also will there be Shay locomotives in the game.
Boiler explosion?
Ah yes, I'd love to run along the Sumpter Valley Railway on a moonless night and have to deal with a deer derailing me while my train is due by sunrise
Can't wait to try the Get back in the cab before you die. This is shaping up to be a great game. Keep up the great work.
Based on your description you could definitely release this as a pre-alpha. space engineers started in a similar way, not much to do but a great proof of concept that got alot of people excited.
Was glad to hear there would be options for laying your own track and industries. Honestly, I am not a railfan geek, and I am more interested in just enjoying the railroad aesthetic. I would much rather do the design and layout of towns, industries, bridges, earthworks, tunnels, and rails, and have a simplified train operation aspect. Essentially a 3D "model" railroad builder, with the added aspect of and economic operational model on top. Railroad Tycoon or Railroad Corporation style aspects with the RRO/CoS sandbox 3D model is a dream come true. Will follow the progress with interest -- (became a fan of Hyce and this stuff thru his videos with KAN).
Love the random derail at 11:15 xD
Good luck boys
Can't wait! Hoping for some Sumpter Valley locos like the huge 2-6-6-2s (ex-Uintah 2-6-6-2Ts)

I personally want #19 really badly, but I've heard whisperings about it. There's a volunteer from Sumpter who's in the unofficial discord who brings it up to them now and then. My general perception is that they are keeping the more modern and larger locos close to their chest, as a nice treat after a while.
I wrote this before, but i will repeat it because i think this is very important. The game seems to run very nice. Sure, you might have a very good PC, but it certainly shows that the developers and designers know what they do. There were so many releases with abysmal performance in the last years and often enough they were just assets slapped together without any idea about how much a computer can handle. This is quite refreshing.
Can't wait for this game to come out hopefully very very soon
I want to learn and fight the machine. Really excited for this.
I would love to see the Smokebox level of simulation depth in this game, it's far more entertaining when there's an actual challenge to keeping the train moving and having to worry about all the woes of running a realistic steam engine. RRO puts you to sleep with its full throttle- forward reverser- sit back and do nothing for 10 minutes thing, idk if it will ever even get anything resembling the real thing.
I am excited for what is to come. Fighting with a narrow gauge locomotive on a grade sounds fun. Still gotta learn how to not go kaboom in derail valley.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's already in there, considering just how many whistles they have. And I'm sure that when support for standard gauge is added with the steam workshop after release, the second thing someone makes will be 1225, right after a horrific cursed narrow gauge 4014.

If you turn on both the headlight and taillight, do they dim due to the power requirement? I have no idea if that would happen in real life or not, but to me it feels like it should just because of that change in the sound of the dynamo.

NOTE I AM NOT A DEV I AM JUST MAKING EDUCATED GUESSES/SPECULATING Judging by this video they put out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c5Z3ytWPp866iqg.html it seems they plan to include both coal and wood burning. If you look closely at the tender in the video you can see what appear to be piles of coal and wood for firing the engine. Now granted these could just be aesthetic changes (that is what the linked video is about after all), but I doubt Hyce and Studio 346 would add coal and wood to a tender just for looks. Most likely the oil firing is what got "done" first and is what they are showing off, with coal and wood firing coming later down the pipeline because of their detail, and relative complexity. As for detail, I would assume the coal firing can be very detailed if you want it to be, just like the rest of the simulation seems to be.
