▶️Introduction
Centrifugal pumps consist of a stationary casing (volute or diffuser), impeller, wear rings, shaft, compression packing and bearings. Modern pumps often employ a mechanical seal instead of packing. All these pump components are discussed in the video and discussed in greater depth in the associated video course.
Operation
Liquid is drawn into the impeller and flows outwards away from the impeller eye. The change in cross sectional area of the impeller vanes and volute casing causes the velocity energy to be changed to pressure energy (Bernoulli’s principle).

    While starting a centrifugal pump is it necessary to shut off the discharge port? I have heard it in many application they do so, if yes; why is it done and where will the fluids go and how does it affect the current required (power) for the electric motor?

  • @jeffsond

    Just started watching this video but before I finish I want to pose a question. We are putting our Dean Brothers mc 10 centrifugal pump back together. We installed the impeller. We go to tighten the impeller nut and if we hand tighten it, it spins nicely. If we just start to tighten it with the socket just a fraction of the, the impeller locks up.

  • @aungkyawoo7088

    @aungkyawoo7088

    The volute casing is a kind of casing housing. You may see other casing design which is not volute. In that case, you will see a diffuser ring that changes the kinetic energy into pressure energy. You can look up the diffuser ring in the video @ 3:00.

    Nice model. Pull the threads out of the packing gland though or you won't be able to move the gland in when you tighten that nut you modeled. The gland should have through holes for the bolts.

    They both do the same job (convert kinetic energy to pressure energy). Volutes are larger, so not the preference for multistage pumps. There is a 4 hour video course for centrifugal pumps, check out courses.savree.com to learn more (or this kzread.info/dron/osExgfjj-DhMJXnQd2Y4gA.htmljoin).

    Great video and good job explaining the different components. I have a better understanding now of how it works, however I'm still wondering why a stuffing box is so important? What would happen to the pump if the stuffing box wasn't there? Would the pump just leak, would there be any damage to the pump or shaft?
