Remember going there in 1979 as part of a holiday. Had a tour and also dined at the restaurant. As a kid from regional Queensland is was like another world!

I used to repair and service The Original Lifts that used to go up to top between 1988-1991. I once had to climb all the stairs when all 3 tower lifts malfunctioned. I was also there when The Newcastle Earthquake happened.

It was a rusty looking tub on a rising rusty looking pole when being built. I'd ask my dad what it was , he'd answer he didn't know.😂🤣

Refreshing to see it without a corporate logo. Back then, groups would be taken around the observation deck several times a day with a guide pointing out various geographical and historical features. Now? You'd be lucky to get the same number of tours in a month as you did in a day.

I'd say the Opera House and Harbour Bridge were greater engineering achievements. The bridge was built even with the small size of Sydney, the faltering economy and crude technology of the 1930's. The Opera House took 13 years to build and it was a very radical design, so those were probably the greatest engineering achievement with regards to landmarks here. There are many more engineering achievements that you don't go to visit (roads, dams) and are much more important than those buildings.

The outside of the Opera House was an achievement, yes. The inside, less so.

I was down there last week and all the shops in centrepoint have closed, westfield now owns the shopping centre as well as the inperial arcade, skygarden and the glasshouse and they are going to redevelop the lot - there were signs saying the tower will still be open but you wont be able to access it from centrepoint itself but from somewhere in market st not sure if westfield owns the actual tower or not

I went up there when it was reasonably priced, and before they put that stupid Westfield sign on the top, ye gods man, it ain't a feking shopping centre! Beautiful panorama on a clear day.

The crowning glory of the post WWII economic boom (1947-83) in Sydney, the MLC centre (1978) and Sydney Tower (1981) so before the Darling Harbour development gut underway in 1985 there was a definite gap. Hardly any new high rise buildings underway until 1991 when Australia was supposedly back in recession. Governor Macquarie Tower and Arthur Phillip Place are very flash looking buildings. The Harbour Tunnel kept things going from January 1988 but it wasn't as visible for obvious reasons.

@westyno6 Your Breakfast is not so bad. The Banana is nutritional as it has plenty of potasium as much as mushrooms do. But as for the nutri grain, that is loaded with lots of sugar and way high in calories. You'd need to go for a power walk to burn off those high calories.

It may not make sense , but it's absolutely true. The thing was always known as the Centrepoint tower. Always !!!. ( The heart of the city , thump thump , thump thump). I didn't know anybody who called it anything else until the 90s. Was always known as the Centrepoint tower 👍👍
