Center of Mass and Center of Gravity | Physics

In this animated lecture I will teach you the concept of center of mass and center of gravity.
Q: What is center of mass?
Ans: The easiest definition of center of mass is that " The point at which mass is equally distributed in all directions is called center of mass" or "The point at which whole mass of the body is concentrated is known as center of mass". One can say that center of mass is the point where whole mass of the body appears.
For example, the center of mass of disc is at center. The center of mass of humans is at their naval.
Q: What is center of gravity?
Ans: Center of gravity is defined as "The point at which whole weight of an object appears to act in downward direction is called center of gravity". We know that weight is the force between the earth and any object. Due to which objects fall down.
As center of mass, weight of any object also acts at one single point, which is commonly known as center of gravity.
For example, center of gravity of square objects is at their geometric center.

What is it with the Indian guys on here always making everything so understandable, thank you so much, I don't even go to school, I'm homeschooled and I don't exactly have a need to know any of this, but I just wanted to understand it, but a lot of these things are super confusing and I couldn't understand any of it, and I'm also way better at learning via visual stuff, and you did that just lovely one question I would have that I still don't understand, I saw and I was right that mass was the main thing if you were in space, but I still don't get how if you were in Space, the center of gravity changes on the phone

On earth gravity is uniform so CM = CG but in space gravity varies thats why CG ≠ CM and CG changes

Sir, I have a doubt How could the center of mass lie in outside the body as mass is the amount of matter contained inside a body, Center of mass means the concentration of mass at the particular point How can the concentration of mass lie outside the body

Consider a book, a square book So centroid is nothing, but a point which is geometrically on the centre of the book. Now when we talk about centre of mass It will be at the centroid it self, But when we place a pen at one corner of the book, the mass distribution has changed. The centre of mass will shift towards the pen in order to compensate equal distribution of the note book total mass (pen + note book). Like we divide cultivated land and uncultivated land (Cultivate land more value and less cultivated land less value, or 1 gold coin = 1000 silver coin etc.) Now If we turn on the gravity, the centre of gravity will indeed lie at the same point of that of centre of mass, as gravity will be uniform, no discrimination by earth in pulling these masses. But in case of gravity difference say our note book is kept between earth and moon. The side of book having pen is facing moon and the opposite corner of the book is facing earth, so in order to balance out the gravitational pull, my Cg of the book will decide to shift towards the earth corner, so that the moon side corner has more portion of the note book along with pen so that along with moon's gravity it can counter the earth's gravity and balance it out. Kinda simple context to give a gist about the basic difference. Centre of mass will remain as it was on earth.
