Center Lane Trucker

Now I am passing trucks. For years I have shown my truck being passed by hundreds of other cars and trucks. Things have changed, now I am in the CENTER LANE passing other trucks getting a whole different view from the other side! While on a recent trip a speeding car cuts me off and almost causes and accident on a busy freeway. See it happen right here on Life After Trucking.

I went to get pharmacy stuff and there was zero wait which I was shocked. I can get a better deal but waiting would be involved, though. I'll stop waiting and do my job search plus exercise like you suggested! But I am studying Mandarin plus on a strict healthy diet so those tasks are done waiting. =D

I watched most of the videos as you made then. I found them interesting and entertaining. And the newer version is also entertaining. I have done the paper and the electronic log several years with Werner and then back to paper log with my own truck ( owner operator) then electronic when the change came. I do not like the electronic log for several reasons. And no I never did run more than the allocated hours. As a matter of fact I was happy with doing 10 hrs. The 10 hour shift was plenty of hours to operate a large commercial vehicle. But the change to 11 came about as a favor that Bush#2 done for the larger companies just prior to Bush #2 leaving office. More about the electronic log with this change came more regulations, such as the regulation that requires the electronic device to be fastened to the dash in view and in reach of the driver. Totally to much micromanaging. A lot of roads are very rough and this beats the heck out of the electronic device. My biggest concern this brings on more micromanaging where there was already too much. The larger companies or some did endorse the change to electronic log, if they want that great to them do it. For guys like me with one truck or a small fleet we just don't need the extra micro-managing. I see some say they like the electronic log they say they like it because they don't have to run illegal. I say to those individuals "you are the captain" of the ship when the drive time or the hours each day is up that is all folks. I have never had to explain that to anyone the second time.

After watching various truckers, here on You Tube, dealing with ELDs, I see the one problem is getting the most miles in the limited time allowed before violation. Some drive down to the last minute until violation, praying that they will have a place to park for the night. If the lot is full, then it is street parking if you can find a street that will allow it.

Even in your cage, that looked like a close call @ 4:50! As far as trucking goes, I've been otr for 26 years (20 as an owner operator), all with one company. Waiting in a dock doesn't bother me. My company still pays percentage, not mileage. Back in the 90s, when I was a fleet driver, they charged $100/hr if their trucks sat over 2 hrs and I got 30% ($30/hr) of that. These days, they charge $200/hr. As an owner op, I get 85% minus 5% trailer fee. So, I get $160/hr for detention. I actually own 5 tractors, all leased to this company. 4 of them are on the road every day, the 5th is a backup. When one of my drivers is detained, they get their % of what the truck makes. For example, my lowest paid driver makes 35% of my 80% (after trailer fee). That means that she, yes, SHE, makes $56/hr after 2 hrs. As far as "waiting" to do what you want, and/or need to do, I don't do that! 2 of my tractors are getting replaced soon. I don't NEED to replace them since they're only 3 years old. I'm GOING to replace them because I can. As for waiting at the fuel desk, shipping/receiving window etc. there's NO need to get an attitude with those people! Any issues that arise there are NOT their fault! They're human too!

The onset of ELDs has shown the problems in the HOS rules. Changes will need to be made at that level to continue to allow people to carve out a living g in an already difficult industry. Changes will, also need to happen at the shippers and receivers to allow for these changes.

In Canada, previous to the "Humboldt" incident (google it), a "professional" driver could acquire a Class 1 license within a day and be on the road same day. But now, we have a minimum requirement of ten weeks training which is no where near enough education and training or experience before you become a "professional" driver. The "professional" driver takes all responsibility for the load and equipment once the driver completes the pre-trip no matter the experience, training or education. The Carrier takes almost no liability. It's all on the "professional" driver. So, if something happened along the way, the Carrier has no liability, the driver takes full responsibility for life, limb, property and harm. They don't teach you that in school. You have the right to refuse unsafe work but if you do, you will receive reprisal. They will make you sit and your income will drop to part-time status. Bills will pile up at home. Your spouse will threaten to boot you out of the house. Your kids will suffer. You will be stressed. You will start losing sleep. Your thinking will not be correct. You will start taking chances. You will cut corners. You will take risks because the Carrier will punish you for standing up for your rights. When you have an accident it will all be on you. But with the huge shortage of drivers, there will always be another numb nuts Carrier that will hire you no matter egregious the incident. So you will always have work. The electronic logs will prevent all of that complete and utter stupidity and nonesene. I can hardly wait for it to come to Canada.

I have always liked your videos, even when you were on the road. Quite entertaining. So many professional drivers just upload anything which consists of very little content or nothing at all, presumably for the single purpose of generating more personal revenue. I heard one guy whine because his new subscriber growth rate on KZread had slowed. This guy had around 100k subscribers. I believe it was more than that. I had already lost interest in his videos, but I unsubscribed when he complained about that. Your channel is fine and contains an interesting insight to your industry and the people who work in it. Your videos are positive and you don't ramble on about American politics. Keep making videos. Thank you and happy new year.

The ELDs really show all the work driver do. We can't even change parking spots in truck stop without logging something. They can be good and bad, they force all the companies and drivers that think sitting for free is good, to stop driving. They can't sit for free and then make up for that by driving later in the day because of the 14 hour limit. They also force dispatcher and trucking companies to be responsible for the load being late. They can't expect the drive make up time. They can be bad for the driver because their is no wiggle room for even simple mistakes. I had load to home couple weeks ago it was 3+ hour to the house but I only had 2.5 driving time. Dispatch cuts the time to close on the load planning. So you don't go home because you can't do it legal and go home. The load can't be late so the driver has to give up his/her home time.
