Get yourself one KEY post cemented in place and then use that to take all your measurements from. The way you are currently doing it means that you have the potential to be continually shooting at a moving target!!!

I thought I had my shed all squared up and didn't realize I was off about 3/4-1" til I put my plywood sheets on the roof. Oops. My finishing carpentry covers a lot. 😂 But no help so just do what I can as a 72 yr old woman. .Fingers crossed for you guys !! All your hard work and money .... Don't give up.. Lots do. Jim, Look at 10:15 of the video. You are checking layout at 4’ off the ground And a post is leaning you are screwed Measure at ground level Do not measure post to post Measure from the corner post Why? If you bust a measurement then only one post is involved As opposed to all being off if you measure post to post

Your drive to do this work is just amazing and I love these weekly videos. I have to make a comment on what is visible in the drone shot at the end of the video that clerarly shows two short red posts on concrete support blocks sitting on the edge of the stairwell to the root cellar. As a licensed architect and structural engineer I feel obligated to caution you about that placement. These appear to be in line with the other columns so I presume the intent is to support the roof with these using taller columns. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! I realize you're setting these on compacted earth bags that are really solid, however depending on the magnitude of the load there is the potential for what is known as soil shear failure. It MAY be just fine, however the failure mode of this situation can be sudden, without warning and catastrophic...meaning that possibly for years it will have no trouble, but then one day all of a sudden the soil gives way and the columns and everything they carry go down. If they must go there, please consider reinforcing the wall on the inside of the stair well with more earth bags tied back into the ground with rebar hammered in horizontally. It gives me the heebeie jeebies to see them sitting there like that. They should be at least a few feet from the edge of that wall. It's totally possible to relocate them and then adjust the framing above with headers and/or cantilever ends. Similarly, the columns that penetrate the floor and sit on top of the root cellar proper are also not in a great position. It may be just fine and never a problem, but the failure potential is real and very dangerous.

Jim and Jess, Don't rush your project. Take your time so you will be happy with your results, and you can avoid more time consuming issues. One more thing, when you go do bloodwork, especially after working outside before going to do it, you need to HYDRATE well. Drink plenty of fluids, first! I usually drink a 24 to 32 ounce bottle of water before blood work, myself. Hope things go better next time. God bless you, your family and your pets. ❤

Hello fellow human beings living your best lives!! Suggestion on your barn build. I am no expert by any means but in my humble opinion you HAVE to set your four corner post in the ground making sure all four are square with each other. You can put the post in the ground and "tamp" 4 to 6 inches of dirt so the base of the poles don't move and then cement. Once you center all four corning post the others will line up and stop moving. After watching the rest of your show it appears you were able to get them all centered and cemented in. Good job.

Jim, I'm not sure if you have it in the US, but in the UK we have a product called postcrete, which is so easy to use, you pour the bag straight into the hole with the post, then you pour water into the hole and mix it, and it sets within an hour, that way you can install lots of posts in a day

Hi Jess and Jim, I look forward to your updates, the first that I open when I see them. I enjoy your partnership and how you work together. Jim, it’s often a worry checking and rechecking when you build, but you want to get it right. I can relate to that process as I built without any experience. I did watch builders at construction sites and worked out the process. It is a challenge as you already know, well you have don’t your root cellar, and the dome. All it takes is methodical work and creative problem solving, something both of you are great at. Keep up the great work.

Great progress. Most Americans dry pack posts and add water on top, I wondered why you do it the conventional way, and why you don't mix a couple of bags in a barrow? I would have knocked together a chute from barrow to hole, but I'm lazy that way😂

This is a late comment. If you set up batter boards outside your building area and then stretch strings it gives you the opportunity to check your layout without losing the string line. 😊 if this is confusing as one I could send a picture if I had a way to mail it to you. 😊 I’ve always put a layer of rock in the bottom of post holes. Keeps the bottom of post out of the dirt.

I would highly suggest, leaving all of the braces on your vertical posts until you have framing, securing the tops, and have that anchored to the ground very well. Otherwise, your posts will most likely topple out of the ground as you only have them 1 foot deep.
