Celldweller Production - Refractor Audio: Transport (In-Depth Walkthrough)

Музыка

This official Transport walkthrough video will show you in in-depth demo and explanation of each area of Klayton's sample-based instrument Transport.
Segments:
The G.U.I. - 00:22
Probability Engine - 03:59
Step Sequencers:
Volume - 08:14
Hold - 12:31
Delay Send - 15:39
Cutoff - 17:41
Pitch - 20:24
One Shots - 23:45
Presets - 24:25
HOW IT WORKS
Under the hood, sits the Probability Engine. Rhythmically teleport between slices, and across multiple loops, by holding 2 or more MIDI notes. Not only does the Probability Engine randomly choose which slices and loops to play at a set rate, but it keeps track of playback, so accented notes, snares, or fills, always fall in order, should you let them.
On the surface, users have 5 sequencers to control Volume, Delay Send, Cutoff, Pitch, and Step Duration. They run on a separate clock than the Probability Engine, and can sequence in order or randomly, leaving the rhythmic, sonic and melodic possibilities without limitation.
Other features include an advanced keyswitch presets function, keyswitch pitch shifting (in addition to the pitch sequencer,) a slice repeater and stepper, velocity sensitivity toggle, and other pop-up controls for each of the 5 sequencer tabs.
In addition to the 1,400+ loops, you'll find 600+ one-shot samples comprised of drums, modular synth FX, cinematic impacts, and more. Just crave the raw audio files? Register to download all 2,000+ WAV samples from Transport and get notified of future updates.

You know, you're doing something really important. Your music inspires, heals. I know you've had a gig in Russia, if you happen to visit Moscow once more, I won't miss the show. Just keep doing what you are doing.

Really appreciate the detail you put into this video, particularly on the pitch section. So many developers make great libraries, but basically go, "Meh, figure it out yourself," when it comes to loops with melodic content. Thank you for showing us how flexible is, and how we can make the sounds our own.

I love this! I'm gonna lose the last amount of friends now, cause I'll just be playing with Transport in my Studio the whole time, while my friends go bake themselves in the sunlight of our G2V star. Maybe Klayton can be my friend.

This is just amazing! Once I get the cash, I'm gonna get this. Just one question tho, is Transport its own application, or is it a plugin for other software? If it is, would it work with Garageband?

  • @SlyHikari03

Random generation needs to be a Plugin on its own. I’d never run out of ideas if so.

It is intended to help create unique sound designs that implement a variety of sounds and samples to create a rhythm that sounds unpredictable and highly dynamic. I'm no producer, but I'd imagine that using this Instrument will allow producers to create sound with a ton of depth without having to spend hours cutting and randomizing a host of samples yourself. And I'm talking about just one element of a track; let alone the live instrumentation, vocals, and other arrangement elements. The possibilities for refreshing new rhythms is potentially limitless, here. My hope is that as producers buy this instrument and implement it into their sound design workflow, we as consumers will begin to hear complete tracks with complex elements that encourage the listener to listen to the track multiple times in search of a subtle sound or element that was overlooked the first time. Like a whole new dimension of musical and sonic depth that most modern day artists fail to even come close to reaching. Klayon has always been about this kind of sound design and it shows in the level of complexity heard within his music. This is why I have an immeasurable amount of respect for Klayton as a musician -- because he puts a ridiculous amount of effort into nearly every track to give it a stand-out sound that is unique to each track, yet undeniably the style of Celldweller. Klayton is the only producer I know who creates genre-infusing songs that sound whole-heartedly unlike anything else coming out of the music industry. And it's because of his love for unique and complex sounds. Now, he's made an instrument that makes it much easier to create dynamically shifting and moving sounds that would otherwise take hours to parse together manually. I think it will encourage producers to create music with the unique and satisfying perfectionistic methods used by Klayton, but in their own style. It has the potential to revolutionize the music industry with powerful, futuristic, genre-bending new music. And that's a future I want to live in!

its the same with his use of modular synths. He said once that he uses the Wugglebug in nearly every patch, but you don't need a random generator at all, you can just use LFOs. The more unsynced LFOs you have in patch, the more interesting things happen when they interact, which is super nice. A producer would record those sounds for hours and then search the best parts, and still, they'll be different over the whole song.

+celldweller Klayton, some feedback from a joe shmoe that sees this sort of product, without any serious expertise in music production but with extensive computer tool use experience (CAS, CAD, FEM modelers, IDEs). You might want to specify that this is a tool intended for pros who already know their stuff. For a home gamer enthusiast, I would argue LMMS or FL Studio is easier to pick up. Cannot probably do all the cool things your product does, but the manual isn't exactly exhaustive as per (refractoraudio.com/refractor_transport_manual_v1.pdf) so even comparison of features is hard to do. I would even argue that it is a quick reference guide, since the last 4 pages out of 17 (!) are basicaly appendix and TOS. Manual should be something exhaustive that shows every sort of step or sequence to achieve commonly desired results. From that manual and this video I gander I gained but a glimpse of the UI and almost nothing about the tool's operation. As for the GUI, if I may, I woud lose those fancy color-changing backgrounds on the UI. While cool, they realy seem out of place for any sort of production tool, as they make the space unnecesarily busy. This is hardly something users would show off at parties on big screens, no? Doesn't need fancy visuals. If they are already toggle-able, fine, leave them optional, but for any sort of quick glance, video presentation (like this tutorial), on monitors with wonky gamuts and contrasts or for users with vision problems, this sorta thing is detracting from usability. I can see this being a thing, but as I see it, it requires some tuning.

Hey since you seem to understand this thing I have a question. So my friend and I like to mess with instruments and synths and samplers etc. We are in no way "pro's" but we decided to get transport the other day ago. Do you know why when we try to load Transport into kontakt 5 it says there is no library? Did we do something wrong or would you have no idea either?

Slightly underwhelming if I'm honest. Perhaps it's just me, maybe I'm not excited by the prospect of producing anymore. I have similar instruments, such as the Heavyocity stuff - I've played around with them but once the novelty wears off never ever find them useful for what I have in mind.

Totally agree! I discovered the same with this Heavyocity stuff. Absolutely overdosed with functions. Sounds almost not usable in productions. Most of the time it goes to simple things right? I don't believe that someone uses this in real productions maybe for film or other media.
