Plain and simple... technology was supposed to bring us closer and make us smarter; we're just getting dumber and pushing loved ones farther and farther away

I feel you are absolutely correct. Don’t give kids all out access to phones and definitely keep them off social media. Strive to teach your children how to make meaningful and long lasting relationships. I see my kids friends that are in elementary school and already have cell phones and Facebook. When they stay over at our house we ask the parents to please keep the cellphones since we don’t allow our children access to things they don’t need to access.

I am 13 years old and I was a victim of cell addiction. It wasn't a problem when I looked at my phone and played numerous videos for hours but then later own I noticed some changes in myself. Being distant with my family members, having anxiety problems and a lot of temper in the sense I get angry really easily for small things and I also became poor in studies. I just wanna give a small advice to students my age, phone addiction makes you loose a lot of things and yourself. I recommend you all to take very less time in front of the screen, cause once you get addicted it's hard to come back to reality instead lets take care of ourselves and focus for our future.

I do agree that this is a problem but I do not think it is a very large one yes it is bad for kids to become distant and develop anxiety etc. However there are so many bigger things to focus on what about kids who are being targeted by vaping companies and get addicted to that what about kids who are being violently bullied online not because of cell phone attiction but for just being themselves. As someone who has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, has an addict for a parent(alcohol) and has tried to end there own life all at only 14 I think I have some say in the matte of wether this is a real problem we need to be focused on.
I think this whole speech is very accurate in showing the harsh reality in how so many people around the world are actually addicted to their cell phones. It’s an issue that lots of kids fail to acknowledge because it’s so common. I personally know multiple people in my life who are addicted to their phones and it’s sad to see how common it is.
I’m 23 and agree on this. Social media has destroyed society. I deleted it ages ago, and you notice how annoying it is seeing so many people glued to it.
Bravo Tanner! While it is fairly common to hear adults complaining about this “pandemic” of cell phone addiction, it is so much more powerful to hear it coming from a bright and intelligent young person like yourself. You are humble and aware. Thank you for your sharing and thoughtfulness. We ALL have work to do in this area! (and I’m in my 50’s :-)

@@ryanthomas49 it is not that simple when companies everywhere want people to do stuff online . From banking to bill payments and shopping. It is all being forced online. So its very hard to get away from technology even though i crave simpler times myself. Life just isn't like that anymore. People who weren't born before technology really evolved during the last 20 years simply dont understand. You go down the high street and for every ten people you see 9 of them will be staring down at their phone. It is awful, really awful. I wonder just how many of them will get to the end of their lives and be filled with regrets over how much of their life was wasted staring at a phone screen . Smartphones are not a blessing they are a curse
it was really simple and basic.I hope we see more people like tanner coming up and understanding this. Great Job!
It's refreshing to see someone at this age tlaking about an issue like this. Great talk, Tanner.
It is great that this young person is sharing this information to adults and teaching other young people. Thank you.
I deleted most of my social media apps off of my phone besides discord and Snapchat, because these two tend to have the most privacy. It really makes you come to reality of how many friends/connections you actually have vs the fake connections in the virtual world. As a child, I used to be so worried that I won’t be like everyone else because everyone has Instagram, Snapchat, and more. But honestly, I would go back in time and thank my mom for not letting me have social media, and honestly to never let me and my brother have it at all. I regret using social media. It’s a waste of energy, and the sad part is people who have mental disorders seek online forums that do absolutely nothing for them but spit the same negative symptoms they are trying to address or fix. It’s ironic as the thing they are trying to use to address their mental illness is actually causing it. It gets to the point where adolescents and especially young teens can’t form a stable sense of self, and base their identity off of what everyone thinks. They turn down long-term dreams for short-term acceptance (fake acceptance), and it’s actually very sad. The world could possibly be a better place if the like button didn’t exist, and the like button was a clever component of social media from day one. Tech companies/social media companies are feeding off of social media usage, and the more likes users get, the more they’ll be apt to continue to use these outlets, therefore giving the companies what they want.
We’ve perpetuated a world where we all need devices to carry out life for the most part. I pay bills, gps for work, keep reminders for side business, need calls and texts from family. It is definitely hard to have control rather than the devices usefulness itself.
I tried telling kids and was told .. I was crossing boundaries .. we must start loving our children and that means making sure they are healthy minds as teens ! Great speech young man ! Stay strong ! God bless our youth !! Very sad truth ,
I found this video helpful and took notice that even I could even have a cell phone addiction. As I do, I use use my phone for everything and as everyone does. Sometimes you rely on your phone too much. We do need to take a break from a phone or any electronics and be in the moment with family and friends. Thank you for this informative video.

Me too. 38 years old and I didn’t get a phone till I was 22 and I’ve never had any social media accounts. I see everyday, people I work with can’t go to a meeting and stay focused. They are constantly messing with their phones. When I go hang out with new friends I always leave my phone in the car because I want to show them that I’m fully invested in our conversations. It makes for a more fulfilling life when you make actual friends and not fake Facebook friends
The last words are true, me while seeing a wired cloud or beautiful sunset. My brain not enjoying the scenery, instead taking a snap and upload it online makes me happy. I don't wanna waste my time for living somebody else's life
I went into a crisis care 2 years ago. When I went in, they locked away my phone and I could only use it for like 30 minutes when I was able to use it. I had to also wait for other people. I now know that is when I am depressed when my phone is constantly in my hand smh. It's sad.
It is all about balance. When you go to see a movie with your spouse, leave your phone at home. When you visit friends, put your phone away while you visit. You can grab a pic together just before leaving for home. When you go for a walk, enjoy nature, your dogs or children or significant other. Do not worry about social media. Be in the moment. Phone watching while crossing a street or worse yet, driving while using your phone, could be fatal for you or someone else. If you have an unfortunate aggressive encounter with someone, do not use your phone to spread the details of this toxic encounter with people who have nothing to do with the encounter and who do NOT want to know about it. Limit your time on the phone. Leave it at home and see if you can feel happy and comfortable without it. If not, you are addicted and no addictions are good for you. They imprison you! You will end up not sleeping well, getting depressed, feeling unfulfilled, because you are wasting precious time. Use them to uplift, educate or capture beautiful memories. Limit your time spent on them to one or two hours...no more! Do not document every minute of your life. Live instead!

The problem I have a phone addiction is usually people are addicted to their phones but when they order something for delivery or when they are actually needed for something, they all the sudden don't have their phones with them As a delivery driver, if my customer isn't going to answer the phone, I will blow up their phone into Oblivion until they answer their phone even if they give me the worst possible rating, I will even remind them that society has been guilty of being addicted to their phones but all the sudden when it comes to something actually important to them, they all the sudden are off their addictions
I knew something was very wrong with the world when I saw people on bikes glued to their cell phone, on skateboards glued to their cell phone, driving a car and glued to their cell phone, in movie theaters and glued to their cell phone, a mother pushing her baby in a carriage and glued to her cell phone, a mother walking her little daughter home from school and glued to her cell phone, people walking in a park and glued to their cell phone, a father playing soccer with his daughter at the park and periodically checking his cell phone. My advice is PUT YOUR CELL PHONE DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU.

The addiction is one thing leading to another.

Awesome speech bro!
Love you bros!
The issue is, that addiction is required to function in society in most large countries right now. It's kind of disturbing when you think about it. It would be like if you had to take oxycodone before allowed into a job interview. Not having a cell cuts you off from job opportunities, safety/location assistance (ie if you have kids you'll understand this one for sure, I need a phone on me always), financial control/information, and speed/information required today for occupations or even daily tasks (like signing up for and getting to appointments). One example is many of the covid tests, which, regardless of your views on, many employers required before returning to work. They required the use of the VAULT website or app to submit the test as well as an email for timely results. Yes, there may be many issues surrounding phone usage but the answer unfortunately can't be "just stop then." I honestly wish there was an earnest discussion about things we could do to combat these issues.
@SuperDuckyWho
2 жыл бұрын
Meanwhile, like I said I acknowledge an addiction issue, my mom will not put down her phone for the reason of constantly perusing and posting to FB (which i personally hate and avoid using because I see what it does to her). I'm guessing the "answer" is a lot more nuanced and tailored to individuals as most instances of addiction are... it's just the societal reliance on the addiction source that makes it all that much more difficult.
