Celestion G12M Greenback, an in-depth look.

Музыка

The Celestion Greenback is one of the most iconic speakers. Starting life in the 1960's as the first speaker to have a ceramic magnet it soon became a favourite of Marshall, Vox and many more. This helped cement its place in music history.
Over the years it has changed slightly. This, the classic series M greenback is the standard model, not to be confused with the Heritage series M (watch out for our videos on this).
In this video we use our Fatbaby and Compact 1x12 cabs (specs below).

People often forget that speakers can greatly change the sound of your guitar rig. I’m looking to get a cab with Greenbacks because I play metal and classic rock. But I like a speaker that lets the cleans chime. Great demo! Love that cab too!

You know there are TRILLIONS of speaker shoot outs on YT - from REALLY top channels like Pete Thorn and on down the ranks to us regular people. Most are somewhat useful, some are very useful, but I gotta hand it to you guys: you really are able to demonstrate the essential tone and qualities of every speaker while also adding some insight into cabs. The first video of yours that I watched was the Blue, Gold, Ruby, Cream comparison (first one.) First I thought maybe too much talk - but no. Your comment about a small, open back 112 showing up the weakness or strength of a speaker was dead on. I own/have owned most of the speakers you demo and everything you say about each one is exactly in line with my experience. Speakers and cabs are a tough, tough subject to cover accurately and usefully. You guys earn a WELL DONE!

Thanks Steve, that is very kind of you, and I get your initial thoughts on the amount of talk. I kind of like the speakers/playing/sounds to do the talking, that is where the sound is but some people like to hear us (often me) ramble on too. We try and aim those videos at people just getting in to speakers up to those who have extensive experience, and I'd be the first to encourage people to hit up those time stamps in the description ;) Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, it is always really nice to hear feedback about what we are doing. Paul

I wonder what the difference is , I have multiple amps with that speaker and am looking to change it or get an extension to compare the sound . I get quite a lot of beef in my blackstar club 40, and I also play p90s which push the mids forward and tame the high end a bit. Problem is these speakers are rated so low I’d have to get multiple. My 70/80s don’t sound terrible since I to that speaker and I’m not eqin to a dark speakers, swapping it out and leaving the eq the same , obviously the 70/80 will sound thin If I were to leave the eq set as I did for a darker speaker . But I’d be interested in a slightly less scooped sound for more midrange detail .

I have watched a lot of vids lately from this channel. I have been looking for a 12 inch speaker to put in my Stageright combo. But, someone on my local Craigslist has a vintage 2X10 Vox cab for sale, so I thought I would look at what 10" things I can put in it. This 10" Greenback sounds great ! I'm thinking of pairing it with a 10" Gold alnico, but having a switch to go between the two, or have both on simultaneously. I build amps as a hobby, thinking I could get a lot of use out of a cab like that. Great vid, love the tones. 10" speakers are now on my radar.

Yeah the fuzz was sounding cool! Thanks for that Patrick. In all honesty the G10 greenback to me isn't a massively usable speaker, like the greenback is... it is possibly my least favourite of the Celestion 10s as I always feel like I'm going to blow it up. The G10 creamback is much more like a 10" version of the 12 than the G10 greenback, if that makes sense.

Tell me about it, it is the H's where things get really confusing, I bet there must be a dozen of those in the current range. I hope this helps... thanks for tuning in.

If I wanted it chug chug on some thing that has only one or two speakers and probably do a closed back when we with a finish 30 instead. Cheers

From the early 70's to the mid 80's I had a Marshall plexi super lead 100watt head and a slant fronted 4x12 wither four original green-backs,and there was a kind of sound to the (4) speakers that would throw the sound out with the movement of the speaker-box back panel. This kind of compression of the sound going into the box and then the sound being punched out like a kick drum, would send the signal beaming out in a straight line from the back of the stage only to disperse and radiate laterally about 15-20ft into the crowd. These speakers played their part in the compressed hi and low end, but the 4x12 format had a different effect from what it would in say 1 or 2x12 configurations. Thanks for making it possible to hear that great tone again, but the 4x12 format has sadly died with improved mic'ing and direct to board staging practices. The old way of propelling the sound dynamically from the backline was, I think much of the reason these green-backs have been etched into the subconscious mind is a cultural accident of adapting to the conditions of a time past-not that this will stop Celestine from pulling the nostalgic heart strings for sale.On the other hand thank God they did reissue them so those of us who want that type of sound(like an old car collector) can have it!

Basically Im looking to blend 2 V30’s with either 2 Greens or 2 Creams in a 4x12 or possibly even a Green/Creme blend. Also want to experiment with 1 V30 and one Green or Creme in a 2x12?

  • @ZillaCabs

Hi James, that sounds like a really interesting mix there. I tend to find the greenbacks just that bit more pleasant all over, I love the M creambacks but the greenbacks always just seem that bit more classy. They seem to fit in to your sound without having to focus too much on where they sit, if that makes sense... so I am always up for adding them in if you can deal with the lower power rating. An M green/creamback mix is grat, I love that and not many people do it... mixing a V30 in there will sound good with either but there is a drop in volume as the V30 has a higher sensitivity rating. That is why you will often find the V30 mixed with a H creamback.
