I'm gonna need to hear a crispy R and a non-crispy R back-to-back to hear the difference.

This may not make sense, but I find there's a new way that certain singers say their r's, almost like a w sound, like an intentional speech impediment... is it called cursive? That sort of lazy, relaxed mouth singing? Those could be soggy r's. 😊

@KingoftheJuice18 I can't think of a specific singer, but if you search cursive singing, there are lots of examples - it involves not annunciating consonants. Lots of people seem to like it, but I personally find it a tad grating on the nerves. 🤨😬😅
A person whose native language has a rolled R's but is trying to speak English without rolling the R's usually does a variation of a crispy R's

Paul Rudd does it as well. Ellen, Paul Rudd, Sarah Michelle Gellar, among many others, do this. I lived in LA for a few years and noticed it almost immediately. People say I now have an LA accent. Hopefully I'm not doing the whole "Crispy R" thing without realizing it! 🤐

To make an R "crispy", the tip of your tongue goes higher and farther back in your mouth, almost touching the roof of your mouth. I think most English speakers keep the tip of their tongue more relaxed than that when they pronounce their R's.
I feel like Winona Ryder does too

I just rewatched Succession and realized I felt so attracted to Karolina mainly because of her voice and I definitely think the crispy R’s has something to do with it! Super interesting how it’s such a tiny thing but totally changes someone’s voice
Crispy Arse 👏👏👏
Yay! Trixie on your channel 💕 Love stuff about accents. Erik Singer has some really cool videos you could reference 😜
I was just watching t&k when I got this notification and got way too excited when i saw the podcast in the intro 😭😭
Okay, but what does that mean? I'm hearing you do impressions, but I'm not hearing how those people are different from anyone else.
That Gordo guy from Lizzy Maguire as well!! Noticed that one as a child; probably my earliest Crispy R encounter 😂

Please do an impersonation of Rupauls Queens!! Also Juno Birch has amazing speech patterns, love her

Im not quite grasping/hearing what a crispy R is. I dont get it. Maybe its because I'm from Massachusetts, and we have nonexistent R's. But it just sounds to me like people pronouncing their Rs normally. (Basically what I try to do as much as possible, until I get tie-id, and it stahts to slip out.) Whateva!!!!
I never ever knew what to call this but always loved it?? One of my best friends in high school spoke like this and it was always so satisfying lol

After seeing the titles i was like trixie should see this, but then realised this is actually a reply to that question anyway
You’re so good!
Incredible
Never heard that moniker for them, but I like it!
Sarah Michelle Gellar! I noticed it a lot while watching Buffy as a kid, I’ve always been interested in language and I remember being so fascinated by how she pronounced her Rs at times. Gets more pronounced as the series goes on, iirc.
Kesha also has crispy r's!!!! You can see her in a few different interviews especially when she says words like 'career'.
I always found the sound of “crispy R’s” so satisfying, but I didn’t realize it had a name. My uncle’s wife has crispy R’s.

i have that. it's called retroflex
This makes me think of that one scene in 13 Going on 30 when Matt’s fiancé says “are you hungry” in a weird way that always makes me laugh when I see it

i'd describe these like forward facing Rs! and u nailed ellen wooowwww
I live in Rhode Island and we have soft R's .
Just saw your embassy suites commercial 😊
I notice this with S's especially. It's a certain high "tss" sound. Kylie Jenner is a great example.

There's a linguist named Erik Singer that has several videos about accents that are a fun watch and he mentions in one that some people curl their tongue tip up when making the Sss sound and the rest curl the tongue tip down. I curl down. I think the upcurl is the one you're noticing. Or they might just have a bit of a lisp and the tongue point isn't curling at all.
My 3 year old daughter has crispy r’s and no one in our household has them so I dunno where she got it but it’s so cute.
