My sister was killed just over a week ago. I have never experienced this kind of grief pain before. It feels like someone shot a cannon thru my chest.

It was very common for wealthy Colombians to have family members get kidnapped and killed during the War! My friend Juan Deigo had his Uncle kidnapped some 20+ years ago, they have losted all hope of ever finding the body, such as the case for many us Colombians! It is just another sad reality of the decades long Civil War that has plagued Colombia! All we Colombians can do is tell our story and hope for a better life and that better days will come for us and our children!!!

I had someone hold a gun to my forehead and pull the hammer back. I was only 21 and married a few months to a violent alcoholic. He later said he was "just joking". He wasn't joking and I got out as fast as i could. He tracked me for years, once assaulting me. I always lived knowing i could be suddenly killed. The day I found out he had died gave me the first peaceful moment in over 25 years. I've been married happily for 35 years, and my husband knows about my past, because I'm still hypervigilant, always on guard. I only sleep a couple hours at a time, because I'm always waiting for an attack. It is second nature. I'm 60 years old now, and I still have nightmares and wake up screaming. I'm very lucky to have very understanding and loving friends and family who understand that I am the way I am because of a monster. Anyone who survives abuse is marked for life, but you can accept it as your scars of survival, and use it for compassion and empathy towards others. Volunteering and rescuing dogs has made me happy and given something positive. I try hard to use what happened to be more understanding of humanity and stronger than evil and hate. I still get scared, but I would not change my character now. I learned how to live more fully, and take nothing for granted. Every day is an opportunity for caring.

Thanks for your story and surviving. The first part of your experience reminds me of the Citizen Cope song "Bullet and a Target."

Everyone in my hometown of Barranquilla (Sofia Vergara's hometown, too), knows why Rafael "Comegato" Vergara was killed: because he was having an affair with a drug dealer's wife. His name was Victor Mejia Munera, and had connections with the Medellin cartel. He found out of the affair, and killed Rafael. He was later killed by the police almost a decade later.

Re: Michael Jordan: The worst part of all was that the local coroner, not knowing who James was and not having a place to store the body, ordered it cremated. Jordan just got a pile of ashes in an urn, which was against his father's wishes for how he wanted to be buried.

That coroner didn't have a working refrigerator. Michael donated a refrigerator to that coroner so the same thing doesn't happen again.

Suburbs nowadays have a connotation of being rich or at least upper middle class. But it just means a home outside the urban areas but not quite rural. So a house with maybe a yard that you need to take a bus or car or walk for at least ten minutes to go to the store or into the inner city/downtown areas. Hence sub-urban.
