Cedar Planter Boxes // How To Make
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The Makers Mob 99¢ Summer Sale: rlnk.cc/summersalefrankmakes
In my latest woodworking project, I wanted to help out two friends of mine that own a restaurant. For this project build, they asked me to make some outdoor planter boxes that would help divide a new outdoor seating area. These outdoor Cedar planter boxes ended up being 8' long, 13" wide and about 2' tall. I made the planter boxes from 2" thick Cedar. I put 2 pieces together to make the height for the sides of the planter boxes and I mitered the corners and used glue, biscuits and metal brackets to hold the planters together. Overall this was a great woodworking project that I really enjoyed building, and I hope that it will help you make your own set of outdoor planter boxes.

When you say "faces east," and "afternoon sun," I assume you mean the more westerly side of east...? That was great Frank, thanks!

Agreed.
To get glue all the way through a crack like that, just pool the glue on the surface and use a shop vac to pull it through from the underside. You can get glue through the tightest of gaps in just a few seconds that way without needing to open them up first.

Just asking, won't some of that glue end up in the shop vac filter?

@@fadetounforgiven I'd imagine you could place some cheesecloth or something thin over the nozzle since you only need the suction and not really the vacuuming-part.

@@fadetounforgiven you only put enough glue on the top to get through the crack. Then you only apply vacuum for a few seconds. Maybe you get a drop or two in the hose and that won't hurt anything

I was thinking more in terms of blowing with an airline. I also have a set of disassembled feeler gauges in my toolbox that I use for this - the 6 thou gauge is stiff enough to push glue into a crack providing you open the crack a wee bit. BTW I mainly use the feeler gauges to adjust tool height on a metal lathe as we don't have a British tool post (with the screw height adjustment).

Frank, you prolly didn't set out to become the Bob Ross of woodworking on KZread, but I feel like you have. Thank you so much.
We have a joke at our company about using personal equipment to complete client projects, so it's extra funny to me that pieces of your actual house are now in a project you've done for someone else.

@@richbuilds_com I expect Bill Gates started out the same way. I am old enough to remember when he was working to create an OS for IBM, and reading about it every month in Guy Kewney's column in PC World. We had no idea back then that Bill Gates and Microsoft would go on to be bigger than the monolithic IBM. Looking at Bill's Wikipedia page now, it seems that he had the foresight back then to make good business decisions. I don't think it is mentioned on the Wikipedia page, but I remember relations between Bill and IBM being extremely strained. We look forward to reading about you making our first billion dollars Richard.

Great video. If you want your sander to not stick to your surface (because of the extra suction power of your new vacuum setup) - misalign the holes on the disk with the pad.

Better way is to build in a vaccum relief. Poor man's version is a hole in a coupling. Need full vaccum - tape over the hole. Need partial vacuum - tape over part of the hole.
I mean, really, who has 10-foot clamps in their shop? 😉😅🤣
@uclatimsta
4 жыл бұрын
if you get pipe clamps and have say multiple 6 foot long pipe segments, you can use a threaded coupler to put two lengths of pipe together and then attach the clamps to the ends of the double long pipe. I've only needed it once so far but its nice to have the option without having to buy dedicated extra long clamps which would be even worse to store, not to mention the cost. The coupler costs a buck or two at the hardware store.
be right back ... driving to Portland to pick up some nice planters.
It is very nice to see Mrs. H got a date and a "free" meal Ralph
Thanks Frank. I enjoy all of your videos but this one stands out. The people who own restaurants have had an incredibly devastating time with this virus. You helped make a difference for them. That has to feel good. I am sure they appreciated your help. I also think those are the strongest planter boxes on earth. :)

Really fun use of the tilt-shift lens in this video. It really added to the shots without being distracting.
Frank makes a quick jig but still counter sinks and uses 3scews is a nice illustration of why his stuff come out so much nicer than mine.
What a beautiful project! I love the final results and can see you do too. That would be my favorite spot to sit if I were there.
I wish I had an eighth of your talent. Beautiful work. I’m new to your channel and I’m already hooked. God bless you sir.
Great video as always. I will add that I would think that a third set of feet on each planter box would be best to bridge such a large distance.

I'd guess that the long pieces are plenty strong enough given they are connected together and on their edge - plenty of strength even with soil and plants inside the boxes.
What a great project and a great investment by the restaurant owners. This space would not only help in re-opening whilst restrictions are in place, but as a permanent addition. It's an excellent example to other business owners as to how to take the best advantage of any situation.
Great project Frank! Turned out great and really makes a big impact at their restaurant. Thanks for taking us along!
It's so relaxing watching you work. I'm in bed after a surgery. You really help heal. Thanks Frank
Love that jointer from oxford England 🏴
Let your friends know they should put some mulch on top of the dirt. If the wind ever picks up while people are eating the topsoil has a tendency to blow around. It's always a good idea for when it rains, this way it won't splash mud everywhere. We had something like that in one of the kitchen I worked for, I put mulch down because people were complaining.
I forgot how relaxing these videos are. This channel helped me get more seriously into woodworking.

Impressive as always - when I saw what was going to be used to make the cross pieces to support the base I figured they would be underneath to act as feet - and due to the mitre they might not have not been seen so it could have lead to the illusion of floating planter boxes - corner feet are great too!
A whole new level of planter box, excellent craftsmanship.
I drove by them last week! They look incredible! Great job.
Thanks Calvin!
Very nice results, I'm sure the restaurant patrons will admire these for years. Great to see Calvin 10 years apart in one video. I follow many makers on YT, but see so few with kids in the shop. I know it's been a challenge engaging my own son in shop work, but have found that projects he has a vested interest in seem to be key. Just thinking of how we can best pass along our knowledge.
Rabbits and biscuits Looks good
Frank, Although I've been a fan for years I don't follow you as closely as I once did due, almost entirely, to changes in my schedule and life situation. But I still find your videos among the most enjoyable of all those I care to watch. The craftsmanship you display and your presentation style are immensely satisfying. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Great project and video. Stay safe. Thanks for sharing.
That cedar is beautiful, and the boxes you made look great!
Another SUPERB video, Frank! Thank you for posting this! Cheers!
Truely wonderful
So classy!
Great video as always. It's weird to see people without masks. Glad to see stuff opening and hope you and the family are staying safe!
Very nice. I would not put gravel on the bottom. Because the boxes are designed to drain and not have standing water at the bottom adding gravel simple impedes the flow of water by forcing it to drain around the stone rather then through the soil.
Those look great, Frank.
1:21 I used to fix cracks the same way (levering it open and pushing glue down in). Somewhere along the way, I ran across a manual for a very old tool that recommended putting glue on the top of the crack and using a shop vac to pull the glue into the opening. I've only done this once since learning this trick, but holy crap, it was much _much_ more effective. /me mental note about checking out Oak and Olive before I move to Hillsboro.

Tape the bottom, fill gap on top with liquid epoxy. Use syringe injector as option. I have a gallon of 2 part epoxy coming in today via UPS. Its thin as water, could thicken with starch to suit. I've use this method for termite repair, use wood hardener first as an option.

Very nice planters! Gives me some ideas. The cedar you picked out was gorgeous!
Outstanding job
I love the cedar smell , I work primarily with cedar . Lol and I am planning on making a bunch of planter boxes . Only down side is it’s tricky to cut if you want to make dovetails with the cedar because it’s so soft , I made a dovetailed mini pirate chest for my son and went threw a few pieces due to tear out ... needed a finer tooth saw or lol to sharpen them
Looks wonderful! 👏👏
The project came together well and looks great. Nice job!
I love your videos! So relaxing to watch.
Beautiful work.
Lovely boxes. I learned the hard way that in my climate, it’s tough to keep the drainage open. If it doesn’t plug with sediment, a tough, leathery fungus grows, choking the holes. Hope you have better luck!
It’s fabulous

Marvelous execution and outcome. Really, really nice idea. Congrats all around.
Oak and Olive should look into Sun Setter or a local company near them to install a big sun shade or several smaller ones. They can have their name on each one. The awning/shade curtain can be always extended or can be set on a timer for during business hours. Loved the video and stay safe.
That’s awesome.
This was a very cool project.
Works well? Frank, That came out awesome! as the trees mature with good trimming will be awesome. Hopefully Portland will let your friend keep the outdoor seating long term. With an awning it would work well for Portland most the year.
Frank, Another nice project and piece of work! CALVIN has really grown a lot this past year. Comparing this to the basement wall, he’s like a bamboo shoot that forgot to stop growing - haha.
Simple and beautiful. It hides the effort gone into lumping those slabs of wood around. Installed, it looks like it's always been there. The space looks wrong without it.
"Hole... hole... hole" Hahaha that put a smile on my face. Just like something I'd do while working with my dad. Like all the other comments, I can't believe how quickly your son grew! Might want to check for someone slipping miracle grow in his shoes! Thanks as always for such a great video! Gorgeous planters man! Great job as usual!

Another great video. I’m planning on making similar raised garden beds based on your design.
Frank, very nice
Very impressive, I will do something similar but I will use plastic planter boxes inside the cedar box. This way I will not have a bottom in the cedar box and the wood will not be in contact with the dirt. I'd like to be able to make it as good as you but you are much better than I ever be.
mid-span feet. Just going to throw that out there.... But I love the reveal you put on the feet, made them very classy

First time in a long time we've seen Frank build something without using a CNC table the size of New Jersey.
I want to go peak under one of these planters and say "ha ha Frank, I saw the bottom" Never say never. :) Beautiful spot, I hope the shade works out so it's a comfortable spot this summer.
Frank, if I could make a suggestion... Please make a video every day. We can't get enough of this. :D Thanks for doing what you do.

Wow Calvin is so tall!
Very pretty you might want to bolt them down? As you say perfect fit for a truck!
I pass by there on my way to the library. That'll be kinda fun seeing some 'original Howarth pieces' out there. Dumb fun, but fun nonetheless.
When you want to apply glue inside cracks in wood. Use a shopvac underneath the crack to suck the glue deep in de crack and preferably out of the underside.
I had no idea you were in Portland Oregon. Strange to think of you as so local now. The projects that have popped up recently with Covid are interesting. I recently did some planters for a local restaurant in Salem as well as some framed plexiglass screens for their registers. Love these planter dividers, they turned out nice with the tall plants.
That introduction really makes clear how all this new outdoor usage totally screws over people who use wheelchairs and other mobility aides. Sidewalks are a certain width for a reason.

interesting point... hopefully there are other avenues at that location, but the overall impact of more sidewalk use this summer might be a real issue for people who are impaired.
