I can’t speak to the Beyoncé present but her mom was my hairstylist and I have sat under the dryer next to Beyoncé and Kelly and they were down to earth. I just don’t understand the hate they have for her.

The way I had to resist standing up and applauding in my living room is hilarious. Thank you so much for being open and honest and discussing a topic that isn’t discussed anywhere near enough. Us Black people need to realize that when we are hyper critical and nasty towards each other, that behavior plays right into the hands of the oppressors.

I’ve been saying this for weeks!!! The ignorance from black people and vitriol shown towards Beyonce says more about us than it does her. We still have a lot of unpacking in our community that we need to correct. As a black woman Beyonce has tapped into a level of freedom to me that irritates some of us because we don’t have that confidence in ourselves. Projecting 101 is what this is on top of jealousy. Thank you Sis! You read my mind !!!

Thanks for opening up this conversation! I strongly believe there are 3 things that drive the backlash Beyoncé receives- colorism as you stated, overt sexuality in her craft, and her penchant for privacy and not heavily communicating her personal business. However, it has never stopped her blessings because her talent, drive and legacy cannot be denied. She is definitely a one of one!

I’ll add another: the fact that some remember when she was a subpar singer. That was the running tagline ab DC. “Cute but cant really sing.” The overt vulgar sexuality is a huge turn off for me bc black women complain ab being sexualized and fetish then give their coins to someone who plays into the fantasy and sexuality to make her billions. Non black artists are not as shockingly vulgar and sexual as top black artists these days. WHY is that??? Another thing is Beyonces numbers are severely overblown. They said she broke a record for havinng the largest audience in attendance-53k people-but Taylor Swift had 90k in attendance. The record isnt record-ing

Hey Carolyn! Thanks for sharing your perspective. I definitely agree with a lot of your sentiments but want to push back on the term “reverse colorism”. While colorism shows up in our interpersonal interactions, it’s systemic. We don’t see the reverse (discrimination of people for being lighter) systemically. Definitely valid to feel like there’s an outpouring of resentment from darker skin black folk who have been experiencing the negatives of this system their whole lives. That’s a worthy conversation.

  • @chinalynn373

    @chinalynn373

    5 ай бұрын

I was looking for this comment. Colorism is the child of Racism. So unless there can be "reverse racism", "reverse colorism" cannot exist. Colorism is systematic and goes far beyond our interpersonal interactions. It affects everything from the length of prison sentences, who gets jobs, to the frequency at which a child is punished in the classroom (regardless of the race of the teacher). Dark-skinned women have for decades been yelling at the top of their lungs about this phenomenon only to have people (particularly light skinned women) deny its existence. So I think this "backlash or reverse colorism" is birthed in the same place as the response that women of color have given to white women refusing to acknowledge their privilege. When you are fighting in a system and those that should be fighting with you begin to gaslight you, it's only so long before they are viewed as tools of the oppressor. This is a conversation that needs to be had, but I don't know that we can when we are still arguing whether or not colorism even exist and if it does, what does it mean.

I don’t see how anyone can have a negative opinion about this hair care line, especially if they haven’t tried the products for themselves. Beyoncé tries hard, I like that about her. She tries out different businesses, I don’t see her as an opportunist, she’s a businesswoman. A lot of other celebs have created beauty lines, hair care lines and have been successful, so why is she wrong for trying? People don’t like one person having too much power, so when Beyoncé branches outside of music, they don’t like that. They want her to stay in her lane, it the box that they feel comfortable with her being in.

There are hundreds of hair-care lines where people do not know their origins or their owners. The majority/ or all the lines that are on the shelves are mostly by white people, and that has never caused any pause amongst our people. It's not even a thing. However Beyonce is now meant to account and to be crucified for a myriad of sins. Even the expectations towards the product quality is disproportionally higher for a Black owned brand; even for Fenty; than the market stress-tests towards the others. It's an issue!! It's also our own people who do this to one another.

I wish the ‘hair typing’ system was never invented. People have made it so divisive. I really enjoyed your take on the line/topic as well as the demo. I was fully engaged! Glad you like the way it felt on your hair. Generally, I try a new product after asking friends who have similar texture as mine, or watching a KZread video of someone with my texture. Or if it’s a brand I already use, but a new item I have never tried. When the investment into the new product is small, I don’t worry. I tried a new gel twice last week and hated it. Wasn’t mad to throw it away, because I paid under about $15 for it.

I love love your commentary. The way black ppl specifically have responded to Cecred is sad to me and some of the comments are a bit scary. If you do not like Beyoncé you won’t like ANYTHING she puts out. However that is their own bias, the lighskin/brownskin/darkskin issue is deeply rooted but also requires a lot of self work. As a Beyonce fan and a Virgo too lol, i am mainly irritated by the comments who are blatantly wrong. I think the black race as a whole has suffered a lot of trauma and has a very difficult time moving away from that and healing to a certain extent. We, as a people, need years of therapy. I love Beyonce. I think she is amazing. I am purchasing her products and I have purchased her country song, which I love. AND contrary to popular and ignorant beliefs, Beyonce has supported us in many ways without our knowledge. People don't realize this. She can't help that she's light skinned, beautiful, creative, famous, successful, etc. and she is BLACK! She has to be guarded because SHE ISN'T US. Black people want the world for nothing and when we get something...we often times still complain. Yet, we don't do enough to improve upon ourselves and our community. We put so many requirements, expectations, etc. on people who have made it with their sweat, blood, tears, etc. (applies to regular everyday folks), but ask very little from the people who oppressed us and are still oppressing us. It's mental illness. Also, your hair looks amazing!! It is so shiny and full.

Cookie I enjoyed your review on Cecred, however what did you mean when you said there is reverse colourism? “reverse colourism” is not possible because reverse systems do not pertain to issues that were designed to oppress groups that systemic racism was designed to subjugate". Colourism was never designed to specifically oppress lighter-skinned people within a given race. Colourism is the specific prejudice, towards people with a darker complexion within a given race. Do light skinned women get backlash, ofcos because in many instances we choose to be oblivious to the privilege that comes with being light skinned within our communities.

I also said the effects of colorism in SOME CASES haVE created a misplaced resentment from dark skin women against light and brown skin women when they assume incorrectly they are colorist and not interested in unity or treating light and brown skin folks in a way that seems like they are better OR not black enough. Like statement I’ve experienced from a dark brown sis “oh cuz you’re brown with white features you think you’re better than me? You dont even wear your hair natural, are you ashamed of who you are ? ” would be an example. What happens after that SOMETIMES is that you have light skin / brown skin women react to that resentment energy and meet it with the same hateful fire. For example “oh because you think you’re dark skin you think you’re closer to royalty and purity than me? I’m still better looking than you” from a light/brown skin person to a light skin person. So not necessary reverse and I’m annoyed that i used that word because i wasn’t trying to label it like reverse racism which a lot of people don’t believe it exist. But it’s almost like a pedestrian intentionally causing one car to back up and crash into another vehicle and the hit car gets mad and rams their car back into the side of the 1st car. You still have two damaged vehicles with two angry drivers who can’t understand or realize, a third party caused the issue. Do i make any sense ? I’m trying my best

Yup , and guess what folks Beyonce does not need anybody's money, she's worked hard for what she has and is in the stage of her life where she can and is exploring her passions beyond music. Black folks stop hating and black is black no matter what your shade you are . Grow up!!!!!!!!!!!

This was good! I had an unnecessarily tense chat w my Mom and sis about the launch and it aligned with a lot of what you said, boiling down to resentment over her many privileges. It was disappointing, but nothing new in the Beyonce discourse. I am so happy she designed it as a businesswoman and not a sentimentalist. Inclusivity is not just for black folks. Sometimes the narrative is to just be happy for our sis instead of grumbling about not being the main character. Wakanda had a largely dark skin cast and yet we collectively seemed to feel embraced. A win is a win.

A lot has changed hints this is why this is coming up again about our coloring but something wants to push us backwards. We need to be more vigilant. Outsiders are trying to divide us. With that being said, I'm a dark skin woman and I get treated so bad by people of color because of how I carry myself. I'm told I'm boogie, stuck up, because of how I talk, and dress. It's so upsetting. People say I'm trying or acting white. 😢 It's so sad. Especially when it's coming from my family.

Respect to you for being brave to discuss the issues surrounding colorism especially towards Bey. It’s hard not to notice that a lot of BW that have been really venomous towards her & this hair line is from browner BW. It’s been consistent since Destiny’s Child and when you point it out, they call you “colourist” or now the new phrase “anti black”. So the audacity to complain that the brand isn’t focused on them is a joke! Even if Bey used other races in her marketing, why not? She’s a global star since she was a teenager and other races do support Bey and buy hair products period. If she only used BW would BW buy immediately? Absolutely not!

I LOVE educated reviews that show that the person in question did research. I LOVE. The conversations were very timely and needed. And the criticism that they wanna see her do what Rihanna did with Fenty and sit in front of the camera so we have reason to buy the products and criticise her hair health. She's a more private person. We haven't seen all her kids. On purpose. You won't run into Beyonce on the street. There's so much criticism that people have to over Beyonce and it's not even the things for which she should be criticised. Beyonce does not need anyone's extra money-- not for more tours or haircare. Black women can do no right even in other black women's eyes. I hate it here. You earned a subscriber for this well-informed review.

The energy people have for her I truly believe it’s something else going on and they need to deal with that internally. The time they spent being mad at her, they could be using it to do something good in their life.

Beyoncé doesn't need to be the face of this brand. Let the professional sytlists on the team give us the tutorials... that's what olaplex did... and having professionals sing its praises will give the brand more credibility anyway. MUTHA COOKIE…. Now WHO said Beyoncé isn’t making money in music?!? 🤣🤣🤣 Stawp playing! She literally just had the highest grossing concert of 2023, in a short timeframe ti others…, Beyoncé isn’t hurting in money when it comes to music…. Also, FUN FACT, Beyoncé and her mother once had a HAIR SCHOOL in Houston, for low income women/mothers… She stays giving back! Let’s be honest and call a thing a thing… BW (generally speaking) do not like light skin women who OTHERS view as perfect or idea.. idea in beauty, idea in lifestyle, etc… RIHANNA does not get this heat from the same darker skin BW due to them relating to her toxic relationship with Chris Brown, her willingness to take her abuser back, her baby mama status, her thug baby daddy who might be going to prison…. These people act like Beyoncé created colorism… MALES DID, yet these women still want those males and THEY BLAME THE LIGHTER SKIN WOMEN FOR A SYSTEM THEY DID NOT CREATE! I am over it! I am a brown skin woman and I notice that a lot of hate for Beyoncé is rooted in unhealed trauma from their experience in colorism, some of it is jealousy…. It is rooted in sexism, racism and colorism! Thanks for using your voice for truth! This very subject had been weighing heavy on me and often I go hard for Bey, not because I am in some hive but because I see what is really going on and it stinks! This very mindset we are witnessing is exactly how we became slaves in the first place, I truly think something is wrong with our psychology and how we look at each other. This brings tears to my eyes.

Such a helpful review! I just want to say:being biracial and light-skinned, I really empathise with your ideas about colourism. I've experienced having "You just think you're white don't you?!" yelled at me in the street by an unknown guy I passed , who was angry I didn't allow myself to be harassed and picked up by him, simply because he was an aggressive stranger.... and why on earth should I? I'm simply not available as a sexual plaything for any passing man, of whatever colour.

Dark , light , we should love each other. What I don’t understand is why light , taupe , yellow black people refer to themselves as”brown “ shouldn’t actual brown girls that do exist be referred to as brown. Ex. Kelly Roland,Mary j bilge are brown women. Not Tracey Ross, not Audra McDonald. Not many light women who call themselves brown are brown. They would never call themselves white because a white women wouldn’t allow it. Own your lightness and let brown women be brown.

I’m confused by your post: There are many shades of “brown”! Tan, taupe, khaki, beige, toffee, coffee, mahogany, caramel, etc. All shades of brown women can and should embrace the melanin in their skin - That’s not a bad thing! Why would we want to create divisions in the black community by drawing lines around who can call themselves “brown”?!? And then, who would decide where the lines are drawn: You’re saying Audra McDonald isn’t “brown”? Ms McDonald is “dark brown” or “medium brown” to me, but u obviously see something different. Please let brown women claim their color: We know who we are, and we love the melanated sisterhood - all shades accepted!
