My favorite complaint from friends that give me sh*t about still collecting CDs is their whining when their better sounding, warmer, analog pure LPs don’t include a DIGITAL download code. Very well said, Phil. I LOVE the CD box sets I have, and even if I collected vinyl, I would prefer them on CD anyway. I think both formats will always be around, who cares if one is outselling the other? It's all media bull crap.

One reason I prefer CDs is that some albums can't be accessed on streaming services. Also, some albums might have bonus tracks on the CD, that aren't on the streaming versions

CDs had became the best value format for both high quality and media preservation all together. I love vinyl, but yes indeed had become into a "overpriced for snobs" format, and the format itself demands expensive gear just for being playable, even more so for ideal quality, and the handling and care that the discs and sleeves demand is a whole other branch on it's own. In my case if I want a band box set I buy CD, and also if an album on vinyl is insanely over priced due to it's rarity or had becoming a collector's item.

The Tribute live album to Randy Rhoads by Ozzy Osbourne is a perfect example, speaking on a Black Sabbath related note. On vinyl if you didn't get it back in 1987 when it came out is now unaffordable, and hasn't been reissued yet on vinyl, not even for an anniversary or expanded edition box set while on CD on the other hand is dirt cheap.

I'm sure these stories are written by people who stopped buying physical music ages ago. It's not really "news" as such and certainly doesn't tell the whole story. Which is where you come in, Phil. The stats are always interesting to hear and you have a real talent for putting everything into perspective.

When cassettes are added to CDs you may be surprised to find that CDs actually outsell vinyl, especially when you consider that vinyl can cost as much as 5 times what the same CD costs. Could be that another myth is busted.

Hi Phil. Happy New Year to you. I saw these reports and I couldn't work out why the journalists (and I use this description lightly) seemed to be happy that CD seemed to be in decline. It's bizarre that they would celebrate this and I was at a loss as to what they actually personally gained from it. Do they stay awake at night frightened to death that CD will continue to be available. Very sad people and I can only guess that it was a very slow news day. Long live the CD!

You may be surprised to find that CDs actually outsell vinyl, especially when you consider that the vinyl record can cost as much as 5 times as much as the same CD. Could be that another myth got busted.

I like CDs more and want them to continue being on the market. Vinyl records get scratched and dirty too easily. The more i clean them, the more the quality degrades

CD's are easier to store. Important because I don't even play most of them. I collect certain bands, but they can't bring a good album out every time.

At my local Walmart which I am ashamed to admit that I even shop there, seems to be hell bent on causing the demise of the CD. They only stock about 10 titles and the rest of the music that's available is on overpriced vinyl. The sad thing is, you have to wash your hands after browsing through these overpriced relics because of the dust that has accumulated over the months they have been setting there.

I was looking at some comments, and I noticed that someone said that vinyl is not overpriced. When a new CD can cost in the neborhood of $15.00 and the same vinyl costs $37.00, that's more than the cost of inflation. Some more, some less, but I think you get the idea.

the last vinyl I bought was in the 80's and its been nothing but cd's for me ever since; I've only increased the rate at which I have bought cd's in recent years

I am pleased physical sales of CDs and vinyl are generally increasing. Love to see young people liking the artwork on vinyl albums, and appreciating great artists of the past!

Still buy both formats, I do buy mostly vinyl, but for those releases that are only on cd, I will buy it…Mostly Autumn are a band who only issue their music on cd, so I buy them…..of my 6000+ collection, 5000 or so is vinyl, the remaining are cd’s….I love both formats, certain bands such as Uriah Heep I buy both formats…..I have many amazing cd box sets and love these as they tend to include bonus tracks, alternate takes, B sides, great booklets with amazing photos and information on the artist…..I think both formats will be around for a long time, I remember when so many said vinyl was dead, I never listened to the rhetoric, still kept buying at many local vinyl stores, now vinyl has made such a huge comeback in the last 10 years or so, so I can’t really see cds ever disappearing……in the last year alone, I bought both of Heep’s box sets, Nazareth’s box set, Caravan’s box set….

I never cease to wonder at how tone deaf the music industry can be. Revenue is one thing, but look at the high production costs of vinyl, the fact that it cannot easily scale to meet sudden demand spikes and the undeniable reality that a cost of living crisis is making high value purchases more challenging. And yet the CD firmly remains the volume seller, can scale to meet almost any likely demand curve and, of course, is a lower cost option very much more in step with currently stretched budgets. And all this before we've even factored in the added convenience and general user friendliness. So reports of its new demise are, as you quite rightly observe Phil, grossly exaggerated, in fact totally untrue. And, of course, chart stats are one thing, but there's also the fact that, in the enthusiast box set market, the CD wins by a long, long way. In fact it is the only format that is capable of delivering such collections at what most people would reasonably consider to be a fair and relatively affordable price. What I think the stats demonstrate is that, as you allude to, all formats are doing pretty well. A very healthy situation, all things considered. Unfortunately press comment seems to thrive on the need for a hero and villain , a winner and loser, in almost anything.

Businesses always measure things in turnover. The "CD vs vinyl" shouldn't be a thing among music lovers. Both formats are physical formats and that is what we should cheer about: many people still buying physical media, whether it is vinyl or CD (or both for some)!

All formats exist together in harmony. The press just like to put whatever they like regardless of whether the information is correct or not.

The main portion of my collection is and probably always will Be Compact Discs. They're always significantly cheaper and easier to manage than Vinyl. And really in my experience, I almost always prefer CD over vinyl, except when they've mastered an album very compressed, but even then, I mostly listen to metal which kind of needs to be compressed to enjoy properly.

Hi Phil, very interesting stats there. I'm still buying CDs, still own some vinyl records I won't part with, and still have a few cassesttes from years ago also. I've been buying music, like you, since I was a kid and it's simply a part of my DNA, and I've no plans to stop. I buy from shops like Fopp and online from Amazon, Cherry Red and also buy CDs and the odd vinyl record on ebay too. I also stream a little bit and still use an ipod- enjoying the shuffle function as you said you do in your previous video. So, I agree, all these different ways of enjoying music are out there for us to enjoy as we see fit. I think the media big up vinyl sales, sometimes while taking a swipe at CD, because to the media vinyl is a romantic story in their eyes whereas CD is a story that will get less clicks as there is less romance and maybe nostalgia involved. If they looked closer they would see a lot of younger people are now getting interested in CD as well as it's a relatively inexpensive way of exploring music which you can collect too without breaking the bank. Sorry, that's a bit of a ramble. Really enjoying your videos.

Started with vinyl in the 60's. Shifted over to CD eventually. You could not pay me to go back to using vinyl! No contest on ease of use, durability of media, accuracy of sonics, when mastered properly. The "warm" vinyl sound is a distortion that most humans interpret as pleasing, but it is not accurate. That said, most of my music consumption is via KZread. For me, having visuals of the artist with decent audio is more satisfying.

Who cares what the corrupt media says? I buy both CDs and vinyl, incidentally, and often both of the same title. I have no favorite between the two, and I don't stream. Neither are dead in my opinion.

I've got them all and am eagerly waiting for the delayed Broadsword and the Beast release. Ian Anderson is really doing those reissues in the right way. I hope he can keep doing them at least through the Crest of A Knave sessions.

Very interesting update Phil. I don't know any young, working adults that purchase vinyl. Most do a combination of Hi-Res down loads, or cd's. Thanks for the video, and all the best.

Hi dear Phil Happy New Year. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. How devious it is to coerce people with limited funds to purchase the more expensive counterpart when cds offer so much more in boxsets... albeit a bit smaller and more difficult to read the liners because of our age. I cannot afford a turntable and stereo and vinyl counterparts at 40 dollars a pop. For those with deeper pockets... God bless and enjoy by all means. Because of the increase in vinyl the cd is providing a very important role in the physical media market and lives of music aficionados... clearly I am not alone. My two cents' worth. Thank you and to more great physical media and great videos from yourself in 2023.

No vinyl for me. Embracing vinyl is the same thing as embracing the Laserdisc again (in my opinion). Back to something very bulky and inconvenient. There was a reason we ended up with something much smaller (and better): the dvd/blu-ray disc. ;)

Both format are or were generational in existence. When the 50s, 60s, & 79s was solely dominated by analog format (vinyl & cassette), everybody were not expecting the onset of digital format. When cd was introduced in the 1980s, it brought fascination to all music lovers to the extent of dumping vinyls. Hence, the famed term "vinyl dump" for several years or few decades later. Literally vinyl was dead. During this period, young generations never had a chance to experience spinning and listening to vinyls. Came the mid 2000, the resurgence of analog music thru reintro of vinyl caught the huge attention of wide young generstions bringing the sales to surprising heights. But the cd format continued to persist, never really dead contrary to what some analouges said. In fact, cd players including advanced digital music formats never ceased in production unlike the turntables and cassette players. In due time, vinyls will warp, gather dust, create storage space problem, waste of money, and irritating tick and pops sound. Do not be surprised tgat vinyl will again find its grave in the near future.

Easy math..Cds are cheaper to produce and yield smaller profit..Vinyl is a super expensive option..Cds are the thorn in the side of the music industry plan to charge outrageous prices for physical format..if cds go away we're stuck as consumers

I think many of those media articles are written by clueless Gen Z or Millennials who've never owned music, and think all music should be free or available for a small monthly rental/streaming fee, and think CDs are unnecessary, as they mainly use music as a lifestyle accessory that plays in the background while they do other things.

Vinyl is been pushed on other channels on youtube really tired of this i cannot afford to be buying records too expensive . I am not foolish will stop buying music if they get rid of compact discs . The recording industry will force consumers back into the arms of music pirates if they do not stop with there greed do they ever learn.

Why push tapes cassettes , it about what money as thay try to get as much from you as thay can. C.Ds are great and so is vinyl. It's about the spinning and the music you love. It's not a competition it's about buying what you love and enjoy, whatever format, one, the over, or all as long as you are spinning and loving it.

And if they keep pushing the oil industry out vinyl is going to keep going up.A big byproduct of the oil industry is styrene which is a component of vinyl and the plastic industry.Alot of the vinyl is on back order because of Walmart and their colored vinyl which is tying up the vinyl industry

New subscriber here. Very interesting stats. Perhaps not that surprising that Cliff Richard's fans are buying relatively few vinyl copies. The stats on Muse on the other hand was something completely different, almost 50/50 for CD & vinyl sales . I guess many of their fans buy both formats. Though I'm an old fart I bought one of the CD versions of Taylor Swift's latest album. I don't know how many versions there are - 4 on CD I think - but maybe there are almost 20 000 UK residents who bought 7 versions each. 😉

why not both!!?? music should always be listened to on your favorite medium! i hate vinyl because it is obsolete!! a compact disc can store hours upon hours of music!! and can be played in high quality in every car!! how are u supposed to play vinyl on the go?

Actually it is down to human nature! People seem to hate anything or anybody that is very successful. CDs made billions for record companies and their repertoire of artistes in the 1990s. The same magazines which praised the CD format are belittling it today. I remember that the very publications that ridiculed the vinyl format as 19th century technology in the 1980s are singing praises for that format today. There are people who will condemn The Eagles or Michael Jackson as commercial dross. But the truth is both these musical acts are supremely talented. The criticism comes from those who are envious of their mega platinum success. The same goes for those who are critical of CDs. The reality is there is no such thing as an inferior format.

Staggering to see cassette sales, and large numbers too! When did prerecorded tapes make a comeback? The last one I bought was Santana's Supernatural in 2000. I use cassettes all the time for my own music and bootlegs (mostly from the internet, or recorded firsthand if I go to a gig). For those of us who make and sell (occasionally) our own music, CDs and cassettes are cheaper and easier to use than vinyl, so long live all three formats. Maybe those cartridges will be reintroduced ere long.😁

CD, Casette and Vinyl revenue is always better than Streaming revenue (which is deplorable) 100 streams don't buy a McDonald's Happy Meal. 100 physical units sold is a STACK!!! ($1000.00 +)

Some forms of music sound better on CD, electronic, ambient, classical or anything with quiet passages

A lot of fudging the numbers. They are clearly counting used vinyl record sales since many stores sells used vinyl records with only new CD sales in many statistics. People buy music a lot more than movies. Formats like DVD and Blu-ray would be lower sales than CD. This is the computer tech industry against consumer electronics. Cd players are consumer electronic devices. MP3 player or streaming devices are small computers that hook to the internet. Car radios have turned into car computers. You can add an after market CD player to the computer just like a desktop. But, it is essentially a computer and not an electronic device (radio) anymore. I personally find a lot of the computer devices to be poor quality that don't last as long compared to electric devices.

Being an old chart nerd I'm frustrated when a popular artist release a new album and most of the songs - or all - on the album enters the single chart the first week after it's released. However that seems to be a smaller problem in UK than in the US and Sweden where I live. I've confessed in another comment that I bought Taylor Swift's latest album but 10 of her songs in the top 10 on Billboard was ridiculous. Is streaming counted differently in UK? I'm watching the UK charts every Friday and I haven't seen anything like the Swift case there as far as I can remember. When it comes to the UK album chart I'm a bit curious about why ABBA Gold, Bob Marley's Legend and other old compilations as well as several Arctic Monkeys and Oasis albums are high up on the chart week after week, year after year. Are they still selling so many CD copies of these albums or are there "too few" Harry Styles and Ed Sheerans in competition?

Hi Max, thank you for watching. Yes, streaming is different and tracks can only be official singles. On one of my Chart Watch videos I explain how this works. Older best of albums still sell really well and most of these are vinyl and CD. This can be triggered by a track bring on the TV or just repurposed on TikTok! The sales are usually to younger fans who are buying classic albums. Us older fans already have some of these several times already! Phil :)

My theory is that The Beatles and old Elvis albums sold very well in the 70's and 80's but that the competition from newly recorded albums were stronger then. There's so much old stuff on the UK album chart, which gives me mixed emotions. I mean, I like most of the old stuff :)

I think the music industry is pushing this narrative in press releases because they have a vested interest in promoting the thing that makes them the most money never mind the facts. I would imagine further down the charts old albums such as Fleetwood mac rumours would mainly be vinyl and streaming sales but for all the new stuff CD’s are still in the game.

Oh one more thing, hopefully I'm not to pesky with the questions, it would fun to see you do a vid ( that is if you haven't already) is what are some your favorite Album cover art. I have mine I'd like share if you ever do one. And do you make your own mixed tapes/CDs? I still do.

Fancy the media lying...who would've thought!! Twisting figures for some sort of agenda is their forte these days. If I only bought vinyl then I'd be buying probably a third or even less of the amount of music I do each year. No way could I afford buying 10-12 LPs a month

Lp vinyl records are horse drawn carriage...according to them is a CD space rocket...people don't know anything about sound technology...the CD is superior in all aspects of recording and reproducing sound...!!!

It has been proved again and again that the CD sound is better by far. However, if one likes the “warm” sound of vinyl, which is surface noise which has nothing to do with the music, so be it. With this argument in mind, one could prefer wax rolls, they are even sounding warmer. No, the whole vinyl craze is just marketing for a life style product (you can get LPs on red vinyl!) and people are willing to pay for it because they want to belong to a certain group of people. The labels of course jump on that waggon, as their margins are higher. Everyone is happy: the vinyl fans feel special, the labels earn more and the CD listeners get CDs for a reasonable price.

@@jameschen2168 On one side we have putting sound in plastic, mechanical record and reproduction, on the other hand we have light laser record of sound, heaven and earth, the stone age and distant future....

This cd-vinyl debate is media bullshit. I am a cd man and am happy with that as cd's are a lot cheaper than the prehistoric vinyl. The so called better sound of vinyl is a myth that has no value no more with the exception for those who have a high market and very expensive wi fi. These days the sound quality of the cd match the vinyl.
