It's amazing to watch this and hear it. I've had those images (the light, the camera, the film cut) and that music in my mind for years. For a long time I didn't think I'd ever see it again. Thanks for uploading! This was when watching a movie on TV really was an event. Sure wish CBS would still show bumpers like this, but it would cater only to the nostalgia buffs, I suppose.

Back in them days, cable was just getting going and most people didn't have it yet. Movies on broadcast tv was traditionally a special treat. I remember my parents smelling up the house with popcorn and no it wasn't microwave either. A friend of mine in high school got cable and it was cool to go over and watch HBO all night.

Can you, perhaps, confirm my assertion that this open was not only shot on film, it was edited on film as well, and if they really wanted to be using it for their month-long Sunday night stand, all they would have to do... They had a Sunday night version of this right? All they would have to do is telecine it to 1080p?

Both this CBS intro and the one ABC used are both soooo nostalgically iconic (especially foe Gen Xer's like myself now in their early 50s and very late 40s) when i see this intro i am instantly taken back to watching movies like Dark Night Of The Scarecrow , Mommie Dearest , The Deadly Bees Salem's Lot and Murder In Coweta County...funny but for some reason NBC's intros during the late 70's and most the 80's just dont have same nostalgic vibe as the CBS and the ABC ones did..maybe it was because i did not really watch NBC much until it became REALLY kid/teen oriented in 83 onwards with show like The A Team , Knight Rider, Powers Of Matthew Star , "V" "Fame, Sliver Spoons ,Different Strokes and Walking Tall

@coreystuart I hear you, man, but in 1979, in a small town, I also lamented that I couldn't see my favorite films any time I wanted. I used to tell my mom that when I died I wanted a room in heaven where I could watch Star Wars any time I wanted (the first one; this was before they were all chaptered). Today, that is a reality. But I also agree that TV today lacks heart. That is why we disconnected cable and only watch Netflix.

I vividly recall this theme music from 1979 on Saturday nights working at KPIX in San Francisco. I was, believe it or not, the ONLY on duty newstape editor for "Channel 5 Eyewitness News at 11" on Saturday AND Sunday nights at the Bay Area's CBS affiliate in the nation's fifth largest television market! At 9 PM when I heard this uniquely wonderful, commanding theme music, I knew I had two hours to finish editing all the tapes for the 11 O'Clock newscast and I had best put "the-pedal-to-the-metal" lest one or more of those news tapes didn't make the appointed time slot, a "Defcon 1 DISASTER" in the TV News business!💥😱... Remember, there was NO DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING in the late 1970s. It was ALL ANALOG and the machines were SLOOOOOW MOVIN'!🤣🤣🤣

I'm 42 years old, and I honestly don't think that the "good ole' days" were as grand as people remember them. As I recall, my parents dumpy little rabbit ears (covered with tin foil to improve reception) picked up three channels (four if you counted PBS). Most of the time I just retreated to reading books, playing games, or ingaging my own imagination. No wonder kids were healthier back then and we didn't have a juvenille obesity epidemic-wasn't much to hold one's attention on TV!

I think it all depends on what movie you remember seeing during it. A lot of folks have very different reactions to these bumpers, and I think it stems from the movie that followed it, that really stuck with them from childhood. Those 'experts' who say media doesn't affect people, doesn't impact us, are stuffed full of blueberries. It affects us in so many ways we have no clue about yet. Years from now they'll realize it, and realize what we've lost by not having greatness like this anymore

Some of these comments are funny. It seems every generation complains about the present yet waxes poetic about how "glorious" things were when they were younger. I believe this phenomena has more to do with how we perceived things when we were young and innocent and most of our worries had more to do with homework or dating...viewing the past "through rose colored glasses" because those memories were from the eyes of the innocent child.
