Most of these were national commercials. We saw them in Manitoba. I had those CP spots in mind when tackling my first TV script writing assignment to write an “institutional commercial” in college in Thunder Bay. 😊

OMG this is amazing! I would think a lot of this is long lost footage! Very interesting to see how life was before I was even born!

The building used in CBLT’s station identification looks like the exterior of one of the buildings at the University of Guelph. Guelph wasn’t considered a Toronto suburb or bedroom community at the time, but it is now.

I've still got my old scratchy copy of that "Hit Machine" album. I think all those stores mentioned in the tag at the end if the K-Tel ads are gone now (though supposedly Zellers may be coming back).

I was surprised to recognise the song in the Buick ad, even though I didn't remember the ad. "You, Y'look Good" was recorded by Vancouver's Joani Taylor and released as a single in 1976. Buick used it in their ads, but I don't think this version was actually done by Taylor. It doesn't quite sound like her. It's definitely not the original single version.

Looking back it's amazing the Legacy of KC & The Sunshine Band, The Spinners, & Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. KC were the true pioneers of Disco along with Van McCoy with "Do The Hustle" in 1975. He had Five Number One Hits and his Songs were featured in Saturday Night Fever, and Boogie Nights, and Goldmember as well as various Commercials like Burger King. The Spinners had to call themsleves The Detroit Spinners for a hot minute because there was a UK Group called The Spinners, and they were next to The Isley Brothers & The Jackson Five the only Act to leave Motown and continue to be successful. Their only hit was "It's A Shame" Co Written by Stevie Wonder. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons did Where The Action Is which was like an Outdoor Version of American Bandstand where they Sang "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Rag Doll", and somewhere in the World someone is playing Grease written Solely by Barry Gibb.

You'd think Canada was run by Canadian Pacific and Labatt if this sample was anything to go by! Not a lot of variety. Heavily featured: Canadian Pacific, Labatt, Yamaha, K-Tel. And the usual range of car makers. I was 14 back then, living away from NFLD for a year in Toronto. My younger brother and I would roam all over the city by subway and bus, with nary a worry.
