Ninja Nerds!
In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will be presenting on CBC | Approach to Anemia. We will first be starting with the basics and discussing the lifecycle of a RBC. If you would like more information on the RBC Life Cycle and Destruction, please watch our videos listed below in our Hematology playlist. We will then move into our systematic approach on how to interpret a CBC and what tests are relevant to ordering. We begin by discussing the main categories for a decreased production of RBCs which will include microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic anemias. We will then transition into RBC destruction and loss including hemolytic anemias and blood loss anemia. We will be presenting case studies on all of the types of Anemia for additional practice. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

Sir- my wife and I have been practicing Internal medicine for over 25 years. We are lifelong learners and have recently come across your videos. You are a gifted teacher and we only wish we had someone like you teaching us early in our careers. Your ability to break things down into simple steps, coupled with your passion ( which is quite evident) make the learning a fun process. We thank you for your efforts and for making us better clinicians. We wish you the best.

I have to watch this again cuz my attention span just exhausted. Your lecturing was perfect. Thank you so much.

Your love of teaching anatomy and physiology is a gift to all of us. I have myelofibrosis and essential thrombocycemia that I believe has turned to leukemia because with a bone marrow biopsy I had a BCR ABL 190 which I believe through my reading is indicative of AML leukemia. My physician tells me nothing but I read a lot. My blasts are only 1% and my blood work is okay. I have an oncologist who is horrible in every way, but the one thing he did was send me for a second opinion to Dr Mesa who at the time was with Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and you will find him on every KZread video there is on the MPNs. I received the primary myofibrosis diagnosis from him also. I've been on jakifi 25 mg twice a day for 4 years. I started with hydroxyurea And at this moment can't remember the name of the other oral chemo he tried but seemed to put my disease in overdrive so he quit it right away.. I'm not a good patient in that I don't see him every 3 months and I don't have blood work done as I should.. I occasionally miss my jakaifi dose. My 43-year-old son died a year ago this month from a fentanyl overdose and I forget to take my medications.(Or get out of bed or eat meals or brush my teeth or go for a walk or get dressed etc) I stopped watching TV the day my son died but eventually turned on KZread for music came across your show so you're it and what a great find you were! Truly a treasure of knowledge and enthusiasm to help others. I don't care to know anything about politics or anything else in the I've always been on top of all that but none of that matters to me anymore. I just saw my primary care doctor to get the okay to fly to Alaska from Arizona. My younger son lives in Alaska and has invited me to go there for the 1st anniversary of Dominic's death on the 26th of this month to experience the Aurora Borealis. So I'm spending the worst day of my life seeing the most incredible phenomena life has to offer. He rented a Winnebago for 2 weeks so we're bound to see it. I want to give you a pleasant background to a horrible experience any parent can go through. My son was an incredible person who loved me very much. I just want to thank you because you've taught me something every time I watch your videos. And I share my love for your show with everyone, even people in the grocery store line, enthusiasm is infectious and we don't need to wear a mask to share it.. I was a registered cardiology technician for 24 years going from the dinosaur days of cardiology where echocardiography was strictly a black and white "M-Mode" through the years to color Doppler, but quit when my 43 year old husband of 24 years had an orgasm and died on me, quite literally, he said "I can't breathe" and I couldn't revive him. He had a heart attack when he was 36 and didn't do what he was told and 5 years later nearly to the date, he had the Widowmaker and was gone before I could do anything. My 49-year-old sister died of metastasized melanoma like John McCain just 10 days before my husband died. I couldn't go back to work though I tried. I was blessed to have the time to take care of my parents who have since passed away. I'm not sure why I've told you all this. I went online to find out more about memberships and saw that I could write to you so here we are. I LOVED my job and not many people say that. I loved not only learning something new everyday because in the medical field you never stop learning but the personal fulfillment of helping another person was like being given a gift everyday. I miss it terribly.. okay enough of my life story. I just want to tell you that watching your videos is a huge part of my life. My fatigue level is getting worse, but continuing to learn something in anatomy and physiology is VERY fulfilling. I was so excited as I watched your EKG video because I could answer your questions and know what was coming next, it was wonderful because all the medications I'm on have definitely affected me and brain fog is a part of my life. Your enthusiasm for life is so exciting. I haven't watched the video that shows what goes on in making these videos but plan to do it in the next couple days. My niece is dealing with anemia so in searching for your anemia video I saw the video that explains what goes on behind the show so plan on watching that soon. It looks like you just came up to the whiteboard, started talking and that's it, lol, but I know there's much, much more. I know I've gone on and on and on, but I have a lot of time on my hands. Thank you for sharing something you love, that's what life is all about, what the world needs most is love but a lot of people haven't caught on. I'm not sure I can attach a photo but I'm going to try and attach a photo of my son and I. Thanks again, sincerely Beverly..
This video may have just saved my butt for my exam tomorrow. I have been using Ninja Nerd videos since 2017. Three more years of my medical school program to go. I am SO thankful for you all!!!!! I tell all of my classmates about you!!!!

GOLDEN! I was actually avoiding watching this one because the 2h length sort of scared me but it absolutely covers everything and I can't tell you how much I appreciate the case studies. I have an OSCE exam in two weeks and am currently in hematology rotation and this is a HUGE help. Can't thank you guys enough !
M2 student and can't thank you enough for making complex subjects so easy to understand. I can watch one of your videos then read my chapter and it saves me so much time from having to look up what different concepts mean. Thank you for giving more lab based information, helps to tie everything together.
I’m a survivor of APL (18 years) and am having trouble with anemia/very low Ferratin. Had my first reticulicyte tests before my iron transfusions. Never had that test before and your video has helped me understand the science and reasoning. Thank you!
You are my life-saver, because of you my grades have been improved a lot. Thank you so much.
Excellent instruction! A video on hyponatremia ending with cases would be incredible. Even many doctors claim they have to revisit this topic frequently.
I'm not a doctor but was recently diagnosed as anemic and wanted to learn more about the topic, thanks!

Great 👍
being a 2nd yr med student anemia is being taught in patho & I just can't understand anything in class. I found this video, gave it a try like damn anemia is going to be my most fav topic of patho because of you.
All respect for you Sir…after taking a break of 15 years for family I had serious doubts about my medical knowledge…you made medicine interesting easy and retainable..can’t thank you enough
Sir you are a gifted teacher and your passionate teaching made this almost 2 hours video seems not that bad. Thank you for all you do. I believe a lot of the med students are thankful for having Ninja Nerd.
Studying for my first exam in PA school on WBC and RBC indices. You have such an amazing and beautiful comprehensive review that helps me relate things clinically. You helped me through paramedic school and now with this. Thank you.
one of your BEST videos so far. the case studies at the end are an EXCELLENT idea to solidify what you shared. Thank God for you dude!
Amazing video as usual, extremely comprehensive. The only thing is that C. Difficile is not a cause of extrinsic haemolytic anaemia, it is C. Perfringens where we see this happen after the bacteria gains access to the bloodstream and we see that total destruction of RBCs intravascularly and subsequent erythrocyte ghost formation.
Excellent teacher....must watch for every medical student and practicing doctor. I am a paediatrician practicing for 17years.I really find it very very useful.Thank you Prof Zach for all your videos.
How much time and effort you put into these kinds of lectures… I’m really thankful for your video and envy about your such talents☺️ You are the light of my Univ. Life…
You are an excellent teacher every time I need to study something again I just check if you have a video to warm up before going to the books
I’m not in the medical profession but I have been listening to your videos since 2019. I have a sickle cell trait just here to learn more about this disease. Thank you .
Adding this to my watchlist. Good luck to everyone studying! 🙏🏽
Again your ability to articulate these topics so well is like no one else. I can't thank you enough for this. As a Family Practice and Acute Care N.P. I am constantly learning. I try and watch at least one video a day, during my 12-hour shift in between patients.
Learning anemias has always been a nightmare for me. And whenever asked about them in preclinicals, I remember writing nothing but rumors. I cant tell you how much grateful I am about how you've helped me shelf the topic's nitty gritties in my head... Now my consultants & senior doctors got nothing on me as long as its anemia😂
you are literally the best TEACHER IN THIS WORLD!!! I AM LITTERALY GONNA CRY. I LOVE YOU
As others have already commented. You teach very well and make the learning a delight. Thank you.

Zack please complete your hematology playlist you are amazinggggggg❤
Thank you, it was very helpful. Good speed and to the point.
I did have low iron and low b12, but even with the injections, could never get my hb above 9, have had anemia all my life, but I found a site which said iodine is important, and had immediate lift in hb , and it seems I am now absorbing other vitamins better as well. My first time in my life to have a hb of 11.9
Super helpful information in easiest way to understand. Many thanks for your efforts ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much I’m so appreciative of you!!❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your clear explanation!!
I have celiac anemia, had iron, b12, and b complex, but hb remains low for 7 years, for me iodine was the missing link, Thyroid test was fine, but adding topical iodine lifted my hb from 9 to 11.9 in 2 weeks. Highest in my life.. Just sharing the info.
I have iron deficiency, my bones are hurting, skin, lost 1/3 hair, no menstruation often, sensitive to light sometimes, fatigue, need lots of oxygen, tummy hurting from bad smells, etc. My bones are hurting a lot and my doctor doesn't really take it seriously. I didn't get diagnose thoroughly like you explained in the video. I wish i had a doctor like you. I'm trying my best to eat the best food to solve it...
Accurate and clean explanation.thank you sir
