Sirio mag mount Antenna, Inspection.
Of late i have had an intermittent SWR problem, in the video you will see me take the mag mount apart.
Checking for continuity along the way.
Sirio cb radio equipment is very good quality, do not let this problem put you off of buying either a sirio antenna, or mag mount,s.
I use The Sirio range of antenna most days and have had fantastic results while using it.

Hey Steve, Love your videos mate.. 2023 and their still shipping these magmounts with that crap earth.. It's the little eyelet mad of tinny material.. I'm guessing it would be better to make four eyelets connected to the magnet? Cheers for showing

hello steve i am new to cb and have a tti tcb-900 coming in the post and a sirio ml-145 has been recommended although the height of it has me wondering if its to big for the top of a sprinter van on there mag mount and wonder if i am able to swap out the antenna for say a shorter thunderpole one should i need something smaller when in country lanes and ask are the threads uniformal or do sirio and thunderpole threads not match

Hello Steve. I just wanted to mention my issue which possibly is not anything related to your issue. I had a lot of trouble with trunk grounding on the newer vehicles. I had a 2009 Ford Focus which had to be set up with a braided ground on the trunk in order to get the SWR down on my K40 antenna. I purchased a 2015 Ford Focus last year and the grounding on that trunk with two cooper braided ground straps proved not to be enough ground to drop my SWR to a reasonable level. Up until now, I have not installed an antenna and radio into the 2015. I have not found a solution thus far through any online research. I suspect perhaps the braided straps I used did not find a proper grounded bolt in the trunk area. I sort of lost courage in that regard so now I am just a base station operator.

Hi Andy u can check for grounding with a multimeter. Either using it on continuity , or by finding a live wire and having the meter on dc volts. Then touch the negative probe onto any bolt or screw you can find, if you get the 12v reading. The bolt or screw is earthed....

A very problematic mag mount here. Had lots of issues regarding SWR too with this mount basically it boils down to this Sirio want you to throw the mount away when it stops working. They are cheap made to look expensive. Water in gress is a issue with these mounts and the coax that comes with the mount from Sirrio is of poor standard so you change it and the problems just keep on coming. I generally go though a new mount every 18 months and its always the same fault.

I just can't work out why sirio don't seem to listen to their customers. I have one of these mounts what I use with a sirio 5000 turbo for 10 meters and I had problems with the coax breaking away from the center pin. It's not just problems with the mount a lot of people have had problems with the cx4 homebase antenna for 4 meters regarding the build quality and not forgetting the problems with the sirio gain master. I now will avoid sirio like the plague.

This mag mount works as it should if that “pvc” sticker is placed on the magnet and then the rubber boot. Supposed to get a better connection. I tried both with and without snd SWR was way lower with it. SWR is 1.0 all across the bands. How did water get in there? Did it possibly seep in from the antenna? I am going to add some electrical silicone sealant to the screws and other seams on the antenna where the plastic meets the metal.

Hi rally the water gets in while the antenna is not screwed on. I have used these magmounts for years. With boot, and without. On 2 zaffiras, a scenic, a Ford and an Astra. Antennas its held on, include. Megawatt 4000, turbo 5000, and a president Texas. No real problems really.

Hey there Steve, thanks for these videos man. I recently got a 125 PL magmount along with a Sirio 3001 Titanium. My SWR has been all sorts of wonky. Sometimes it'll be a nice 1.5 and other times it will be way over 3. Everyone keeps telling me I need to ground the radio chassis. My local radio repairshop says that's crazy. Regardless, I took some 14 gauge wire and found a screw on the back of my radio, secured it with a ring terminal, and tried hooking it up to a variety of pieces of metal in my car. I think it makes it worse. Although if I dangle it in the air, sometimes the SWR shoots way down below 1.5. My magmount is brand spankin' new, no water or corrosion, so I'm just trying to figure out if there's anything I should do to the magmount itself to get my SWR lower. Perhaps a new cable?

Hi Marky a few things I need to know, firstly is there a patch lead involved?? Is your swr meter a separate or built into the rig. Do you put the mag mount on the same place of the car each time??? For the record I have no grounding on my mag mount. With my megawatt 4000 it needs screwing in quite firmly, (its maybe 5 years old) Where on the car truck or van is your mag mount mounted???

Hey Steve! Thanks for the reply man. I'm using one of those cheapo Astatic SWR meters with a patch cable from the transmit port to the radio. The antenna itself is being plugged in right to the Antenna port on the SWR meter. No other patches are being used. The antenna is using the stock RG58 cable that came with it. I've made sure there is no bends/pinches in the cable as I have it running through the rear hatch of my little SUV (Mazda Tribute). I've tried relocating the magmount to several spots on my car all with the same results. I try to keep it dead center on the roof. The only thing that seems to affect the SWR is when I wave the microphone around in the air or that little chassis ground cable I put on. Which leads me to believe it's some type of RF feedback or interference. I disassembled the top part of the magmount just to check the wires underneath. Mine looks just about identical to yours. I see some exposed wire that isn't covered by any silicone. Half tempted to rip it all out! I appreciate the response man. Dang thing has been bugging me. Been dying to use my radio :-)

ok I feel your frustration here a few more questions. (where do I start) ok if you connect everything up and key up, try moving the patch lead about where it connects, (both ends) If your SWR JUMPS AROUND, your patch lead may be faulty. Are all of the pl259 done up tight, if they are check that the centre of the plug is also tight (to the rig or swr meter) Have you a roof rack on the car. IE is the antenna below roof bars etc. Are you receiving ok??? we will sort this fella...

Hey Steve! Circling back on this video because of some further developments with the ol' Sirio 145 PL magmount! Since your last reply, I ran a big old 10 gauge power wire from my car battery, and then a nice short grounding wire to a solid metal spot on my car's chassis on the floor, got some nice crimps and hooked it up to my power cable to the radio, and believe it or not, my SWR normalized and I was getting great reception and range. About 5 miles max on regular channel 2 AM and about 30 miles on channel 38 LSB on 12 watts factory stock. Now the only problem is, we've been getting a lot of rain here on the East Coast of the States and I haven't heard any radio activity for several weeks it seems. I can't seem to tell if there is major atmospheric issues or if my antenna is just broke. I'm using a Sirio Titanium 3001. I even had a mate solder a brand new high quality RG8X cable on the magmount instead of the defacto RG58. SWR is reading 1.1:2.0, but I'm not receiving anything at all these days. Very strange since I'm so used to hearing something all the dang time. I switched to a Lil' Wil just to run some tests, but that doesn't seem to receive anything either. I can talk locally with some friends at about 1-2 mile max. I even bought a new radio! A Bearcat 980 SSB. Beautiful equipment but I still can't hear anything and I don't think anyone can hear me! LOL! Either way, I just wanted to see if you've had any continued issues with the magmount or if I'm just having some bad luck. Hope all is well man!

Marky Shaw Hi Marky firstly lets look at the facts. you changed the antenna , and the radio and still have a problem. Is there something that has not been replaced, and still used with both rigs and Antennas?? Maybe and to be honest patch leads are often faulty, or possible your SWR meter. What vehicle do you have, and is the magmount on the roof??? Is there a roof rack on the car/ van?? Many questions I know , but it will help me get you sorted. My mag has been fine since the vid, and SWR is very steady. Your repair shop is right as the magmount does not make an electrical connection to the vehicle.

More that likely that any water left down there is not going to do the contacts any good. The antenna thread looked a little dull as well. I would prob clean it all up with wire wool. Dont know if a thin coating of petrol jelly may help, works on batteries. Sure you will get there mate.
