CB Radio "Lingo and Slang". AKA: Things you might hear on the radio. I guide to understanding things

Long requested, and super hard to make without laughing. It's CB Lingo! Join me as I cover some of the more commonly used words and phases. For long time CBer's This is a no brainer, for new users, you may have never heard of any of this studd before, so enjoy!
The important thing to remember is that you don't need to use any of these when on the air. It's just a guide to what you may hear.

I always ran a good CB setup in my Super Trooper cruiser . Most drivers were shocked it was actually me talking back to them . One of the very few things I miss about being a “Full Grown Bear” “Got a full grown bear at the 107 yard stick taking pictures at you eastbound” 👍

As a long time ham, ex CBer, and one who has used radio professionally in my career with the Coast Guard, I have never understood the need to use special "lingo" on the radio. I've always found that using plain English gets the message across without having to try to interpret what all that slang and lingo means. Yeah, I'm a grumpy old curmudgeon but, hey, plain English works!!

Enjoyed the heck out of this, Eric, trip back in time for me when I was into CB wayy back. My first CB's had 23 channels and put out 5 watts. I bought a new unit recently and am getting back into the hobby. I live in a rural area now and not much radio traffic except for some trucker talk from the local highways. A paper mill is nearby and a lot of wood hauling around here. I learned a couple of terms, new to me, from your video in reference to the linears; 'burner' and 'foot warmer'. I remember a couple from years back, when someone was putting out a strong signal they might hear "man, you're walkin' the dog", and if a fellow asked how well he was getting out the guy might reply 'you're putting about 6 pounds me', his meter reading. Thanks for the Sunday morning wake-up, enjoyed it!

The 50 dollar lane is the far left inside lane on an eight lane highway. It is called that, because several states restricted trucks from using that lane. Later the Federal government said that trucks pay a highway tax and can't be restricted in lane use, but the CB slang name still exist. Bear in the air = police aircraft. Eye in the sky = police aircraft. Kojak with a Kodak = unmarked police car shooting RADAR. How's it look over your shoulder / donkey? = How's the road, traffic, weather and enforcement behind you? Foot warmer = linear amplifier.

I spent 40 years of my life driving long haul. By the time I retired and based on what I heard on CB radio channel 19, I was convinced that truckers were the nastiest, dumbest humans on planet earth. Then,,,, I took CB out of my truck and for the last ten years of trucking, I realized that it was A very small minority of truckers that actually used CB anymore and for the same reasons I quit. Now, I have a CB on my side by side ( the tiny president thanks to you) and I use it to communicate with my friend when we take the UTVs out. I never hear truckers on the radio anymore.

If the FCC approved MURS back in the late 80's and early 90's we ptobably would only had to carry one radio, that's depending how channels that could programmed. Holy cow you are bringing back memories. There was one guy with a decent tower setup right on 401 that always said he was transmitting from tranquility base. I went by NorthStar back then, and was over on the Apex side of things so I usually only caught that side of the county if I was at home with my Uniden Washington and dual co-phased 102 whip setup on the roof of my old tin top singlewide. Those were the days! There was Shutterbug, she worked at the same place Boarderline worked. A video store near the Wake tech college.

I had a friend that used to hang out on air with us that lived just past that toward 1010 over on the left, down Donnybrook (I think). I remember his name being Fred Jefferies and i believe he went by "35". He ran some old Tram radios. Really nice guy. I miss those old days.

Many of the truckers don't use CB anymore, and that's the main reason they aren't aware of traffic situations ahead of them to prevent accidents. You won't likely hear any of the CH 19 highway lingo at home on your base among the local community who aren't truckers. There is a nonsensical CB-DX language on channel 6 and the other popular skip channels where even guys north of the Mason-Dixon line use fake southern drawls and you hear the readin' the mail, bye-bye-bye, and a lot of ba-ba-ba's as they walk all over one another's signals.

I will say I go thru week long periods or more where I get skip every morning from as early as I wake up till noon or so. Still yet no one has responded to me but I'm working on my setup. As far as my skip goes I am hearing pretty much the whole nation at times. Question: what is a good short wave base station style radio to only listen to Ham radio? Something in the $300-400 range? What style of antenna works for short wave base stations? Currently I got the Antron 90 with my CB. (also my antenna currently doesn't have the ground plane hooked up till warm weather, I have yet to find out if the ground plane helps or hurts my signal) Thanks!

I got into CB’s in the 70’s and something I remember is that you could get a laminated 10 code cheat sheet form Radio Shack and keep it on you cars visor for quick reference or until you memorized all that was on it. Mine was a yellowish color or maybe tan, it’s been a long time. Anyway I sure would like to have it now. So here’s my question. Does anyone have a picture of what I’m talking about? Nice to hear from you, Eric. It was good to hear a lot of this familiar modulation, which unfortunately is no longer common. I am sorry that CB has become what it is today. I rarely go to the frequency because what I hear only proves that whoever is behind the radio does not show real interest in amateur radio, being more common to hear bad examples of language than the regular use of radio manners. However, I keep my setup ready to go because if I detect something that I really like, I’ll do what I like in CB again. To communicate. 73 Macedo Pinto Portugal

I've caught a couple of my other favorite KZreadrs using CB slang. And their channels have nothing to do with CB or anything electronics related. One signs off at the end of every video with " Have a great day today and a better day tomorrow" I told him I've never heard that except on CB and he said he's an old CBer from the 60s and 70s. Another one said "Negatory" on a video the other day.
