Cavett's crappy interview of Stevie Wonder

Ойын-сауық

From THE DICK CAVETT SHOW. August 11, 1970. Stevie's suit looks hideously uncomfortable.

I didn't find this crappy at all. It was very relaxed light talk and Dick Cavett has a class to him that was never offensive.

Cavett isn't an ahole, he's just always looking to get a laugh, that's his job. Letterman does the same thing. Stevie is also being humorous in his own way.

The only thing is that what Cavett's doing isn't funny. Stevie looks as though he didn't want to flounder in the interview and did his best to maintain some control of it. Cavett didn't do a good job of holding the reigns steady.

Bruhh back then! Dark humor was normal (although theres no dark humor mentioned in this video)! My point is, people back then weren’t as sensitive as most are now! My father always told me this generation is filled with weak/ soft hearted people! Which of course is not necessarily bad! But trust me, theres no rudeness in this video.

And what about Jeff Beck too. . there’s lots. I just noticed you included SITKOL . . so many more musicians and writers with that album. Dick Cavett trying to be funny and smart but Stevie at only 20 years old totally outshone him. P E A C E : )

Don't get me wrong I think Stevie is a great artist, just not a great comedian judging from this clip. That being said, that interviewer could've handled it a lot better, it's his job to make the conversation not feel awkward.

I'm sorry I took life for granted when I was young. Not only did we have real music from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Earth Wind and Fire, etc. but we also had civil discourse. I was a kid who loved to watch Cavett, David Suskind, Black Perspective on the News (Tony Brown), Firing Line (William F. Buckley), and Phil Donahue, among others. Now we've got the crappy faux news (FOX) along with MSNBC and CNN. There's no honest discourse and no unbiased news sources.

So true. If one was fortunate to come up on Donahue and Tony Brown and the music of Stevie and Earth Wind and Fire, then today's entertainment, rather anti-tainment, IS going to come up short and disappoint. But, the good news is that sooner than later that quality of the '60s-late 1980s WILL return. Truly. This is after all LIFE, and life is nothing but a DIVINE MOVIE playing in REAL TIME. The present phase of the movie, called END-TIMES, is almost over. Whew! Shalom.

I missed a grand chance to see Ray Charles live in 1995. Saw the ads for him coming to town and didn't attend. I wish I could redo it all. Dick Cavett was never seen on UK TV screens, so we missed out on great interviews like these. It would have been great to have seen Stevie Wonder chatting like this as, although all of his songs were heard on the radio and TV, we never got the chance to see him chat informally in the way US audiences did. In later years, UK Beatles fans also missed out on the interviews John Lennon gave but, thanks to KZread, many of them have been posted. Brilliant to see my childhood heroes again, but from a different perspective and, in this case, Stevie Wonder, he looks completely at home, and I suspect Dick Cavett took the time to make him feel at ease before the cameras rolled. That album ended up being "Where I'm Coming From." I never knew about it back then, and then once I discovered it's existence, it was out of print! Found it online a few years ago, it's really good and I would include it in the classic era.

Dick Cavett is one of the pioneers of talk shows and a terribly shy man. I absolutely adore and respect him for how he handled his career with nothing but good sense about people and creativity for a foundation.

The title of this video is a troll job. This is regular, normal Dick Cavett. Perhaps he's an acquired taste now, but back in the day he had the least constrained interview format of any show in the world, including the Tonight Show. And Stevie doesn't just keep up with Cavett, he upends him and forces him to pursue different lines of questioning. Great clip, OP.

As a lot of people have mentioned I wouldn’t call it a crappy interview. Modern talk shows are far more coordinated and rehearsed to the point where the awkward moments seen here are far rarer, but I think this style of delivery has its own charm and realness that’s lost today

I always liked Cavett. I think that in general he usually came off as genuine in terms of respect, or interest / curiosity, but his style of humor didn't always mesh with everyone. Despite his first name, I never thought of him as one.
