Ah thank you ive been wondering. Comments like yours should be at the top, sigh. I thought it was about becoming friends with the loner and depressed kid who everyone else bullied/avoided, and grew to understand/appreciate the way lemon boy thought and saw the world. it being a song about being a good friend is a possible interpretation but it could also be about realizing you're lgbtq! the denial at the beginning (pulled him out by his hair like a weed), starting to accept oneself (started to get along together), feeling good in one's skin because of that (it's actually pretty easy beeing nice), rejection by one's surrounding (found out that my friends were more of the savoury type) and the little doubts you can have. like even if you know yourself and are sure maybe some people are right and you're deluding yourself (tortoise shells tear away from their spine it happens all the time (the point is that never happens)). and then it ends with affirmation that no this is valid, this is part of your life, and it's ok and nice even. edit: got mixed up and it's not the offical interpretation! cavetown just said lemon boy is a part of himself and not another person

Don't worry I was in the mental hospital too. I was originally in Dayton children's hospital because I was doing a sleep study. They thought it was epilepsy but I just have a stress disorder that takes form physically but anyway I was suicidal and I didn't think I was able to go home without doing anything to myself. I had covid so I had to stay in my room and not join the others there. I stayed for a week, but I had the best grippy sock vacation. I still have depression and got it genetically from my mom, but I'm engaged currently to the best woman ever. I'm trans but not fully and I'm also not straight at all. My dad doesn't even know about anything and I will take it to the grave (he's against the whole spectrum thing) my mom is totally fine with it and my dad is definitely not a nice person like at all, he used to hit me and both of my brothers for at least 10 years and has cheated on his wife (mother) twice maybe three times. I started the whole suicide thing 2-3 years ago and he was calming down after he saw my wrist but like a few months later it was worse. He kicked my middle brother out five times in his life and mom had to get him each time it was further away from the house. If either of us (me mostly) wasn't doing good at a football game, he would scream and hit us in the car. It was midget league football and middle school. He would also yell at me from the bleachers while I was on the sidelines. There are 8 people living here including my fiancee, and it's really loud during football season.

This was actually the first song that my ex-boyfriend dedicated to me. He used to believe that I was the lemon boy he had been waiting for. Guess what? he was the one who got tired of me. I still love him though. I still don't get the fact that I thought we will always be forever regardless of how hard life is. Our relationship wasn't perfect but maybe people really do get tired, even if you truly love someone. I was there when he was at his lowest. I still do love him. I remember listening this song on repeat two years ago, and i came up with a lil story. It's the story of a young boy, who is very shy and unsure of himself. A energetic and bittersweet boy starts to hang out with him at the kindergarten and they quickly become best friends. The both opposite are getting along so well, they play together everyday. But one day they fighted over a silly thing and the lemony boy got pushed on the road by the shy boy, and was hit by a car. The shy boy was feeling absolutely guilty and traumatized by that, of course. He couldn't accept what he had done, and in absolute denial he started having the same friendship with a yellow pillow with a smile drew on it. The music continues and he became more and more alone with his pillow. And years after that, when he was a young teenager, he realized the pillow lemon was ruining his life. He couldn't stand it anymore and decided to go find his childhood friend for a final visit.

Lemon Boy is a representation of our inner childhood. As kids, we tend to see the world from a brighter perspective. That's why lemon boy always grows back like a weed because the narrator is still a child. Playing outside then it starts to rain? Fine, then play under the rain. It was simple back then. But as we grow older we tend to get a grasp on reality. Truth is, the world is ugly. We start to get pressured by what society expects us to do and worry about things we can't control. Hence the lyrics, what if we run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, whales start to beach themselves, and tortoise shells tear away from their spine? In the end, he just accepts Lemon Boy as a part of him. Not getting too attached to material things and living a simple life like Snufkin and little my. Appreciate the little things and always see the bright side in bad situations. Also, I love how he starts with "Lemon Boy and me" and then it became "Lemon Boy and I" in the end. Like how we realize right vs wrong as we grow older but also become boring, formal adults.😂 I love this song

So what I think this song is about is that lemon boy is like the shy kid or a kid with anger issues (why he calls him a bittersweet boy) and he wants to become friends with robin. Robin is hesitant at first but they eventually become friends. robin starts acting like lemon boy and robins friends don’t like lemon boy because of his personality. Robin doesn’t care and they stay friends. Soon robin is scared of losing lemon boys friendship (what if I run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, etc.) but he concludes that he won’t and eventually they become best friends Either that or he’s literally talking about befriending a lemon (People I know it’s about anxiety Sri replying to it saying that it’s about anxiety)

My interpretation of it is someone developing depression or something like that. He ripped Lemon Boy out of the ground but he came back. Most people try to deny their depression. The friends being savory types and not really liking Lemon boy could be his friends not liking the person he's becoming when his depression starts becoming more visible. And finally, him remaining friends with Lemon boy could be him finally accepting his depression and learning to live with it.

I think this song is about him having some sort of mental illness or anxiety, and that is “lemon boy” and he is basically singing about how he got used to having “lemon boy” so he learned how to get along with it and the line “what it lemon boy don’t grow no longer” I think that since he lived with “lemon boy” for so long that he will miss it or something. Also that the line “Then his bitter sweet started to rub off on me, you’d think smelling like lemon zest would be pretty neat” was him saying that it started to affect him. I found this out a couple days ago and totally changed what I think while listening to this song.

This should be a horror story, just imagine. You walk through the woods at this dark hour. Some would say you are a freak, enjoying the night, but you disregard them. Weird.” You say, as you continue walking. It was strange, but you weren’t interested into getting into someone else’s business. That was theirs to deal with and not yours. You didn’t want to pry in someone’s life, you kept to yourself and they did too. That was a mistake you make once and only once. Squelch! You snap out of your thoughts, investigating the floor for what would make that noise. It did not sound like mud. As you lift your boot, you see its pieces of a lemon. It was definitely a coincidence. Definitely! Nothing wrong there! Nope! You turn around, blood rushing to your head. You had to leave, it was getting a bit too scary out here.
