Among the many other jobs of cats in ancient Egypt. Cats were considered prestigious guards who warded off plague and pestilence. (This was mainly done by warding off small rodents that carried disease.) They did everything from guard ships from rats (and entertain their crews), entertain and guard the Pharaoh and His/Her family, guard the temples, and yes guard the crypts. Guarding the catacomb crypts was considered a prestigious task for cats. Nothing would disrupt the living (and presumably dead) like having rats running around the crypts. As such cats were mummified and buried with the dead to continue to protect the dead in the afterlife.
