Yep cats and dogs have a basic understanding of physics in a way. They would get confused if a ball moves uphill without any outside force because they know it isn't normal, so the higher viscosity of the water would probably also throw them off, even just from watching it pour.

My mother didn’t have dysphasia but at the end of her life she had to have thick water. She had no saliva because of cancer treatment and had to sip water all the time to keep her mouth and throat moisturized. Be cause of that the regular water would go down to her lungs and set off pneumonia. With the thick water it helped prevent that from happening.

They make fluids even thicker for people who can’t tolerate nectar thick (what you have). I’ve assisted patients with ‘drinking’ pudding-thick liquids, which you give with a spoon because they are literally thick as pudding. While these products are really helpful for preventing aspiration, they can also really suck for people who still have their taste and texture senses intact and can easily tell the difference

I I THINK I KNOW WHY THEY'RE DOING THAT. Okay so first you need to know that cats can't see things that are close to their faces, because of how their hardware is made. So they use their whiskers to "see" things close to them. The thick water probably makes it feel like that is not water (because water doesn't push against their whiskers like that) and they're basically failing their water depth calibration test and then concluding that there's no water there. Siamese cats though have genetic quirks related to their breed and they all are at least a LITTLE cross-eyed, so they all pretty much learn depth perception in a different way so they might ironically be better at figuring out how close the thick water is to their face because they're already used to being bad at distance and compensating. (Plus I'm pretty sure that siamese cats are neurodivergent on top of their mild-to-severe cross-eyed-ness, honestly their breed has these really weird brain things going on compared to more... usual cats.) This is just a hypothesis but if anyone has a non-siamese cross-eyed kitty those SHOULD also figure out the thick water quickly and not go "...this isn't water wtf".

  • @exist4046

You can add thickener to normal water and it becomes thick water. I recently learned this while taking care of two patients with dysphagia. Edit: I realize people are confused with the usage of thick water for swallowing problems. Dysphagia is when liquids have the tendency to flow through the wrong pipe, which can lead to problems such as choking and aspiration. This is caused by impaired ability to swallow properly, which necessitates the ingested liquid to be thick so the patient can have better control on the liquid, thus lessening risks for complications. The thickener causes the water to become more viscous without altering other properties, which makes it ideal for many types of liquids, like water and juices. These liquids are usually taken with other medicines, like Gavilax, which is powder. Edit: I love a healthy reply section.

Speech-Language Pathologists are the professionals responsible for swallowing difficulties related to the mouth and throat. Many hospitals have out-patient centers where you can make an appointment with an SLP to assess your swallowing. There is some debate on the use of thickened liquids especially for less severe issues but there are many other strategies and exercises to improve your swallowing that an SLP could help you with!

Actually the most current evidence states there is no reason to use thickened water. The vast majority of SLPs do not recommend thickened water even with serious risks of aspiration, or water entering the lungs. It is almost impossible to be properly hydrated with Thickit water. @@ZeldasSword Not sure where you get your evidence? John Hopkins medical research, as well as research backed by hospitals in the US at least, state thickened liquids are necessary for those at risk of aspiration. My grandmother had to last summer. She was just fine. They gave her a thickened diet for well over two months, and she recovered greatly during that time. She went to the bathroom regularly as well (I would know, as I had to help her to the bathroom and up often as she could not walk). Additionally, the problem with water in your lungs is that you could LITERALLY DIE of asphyxiation? It's not that "you'll unlikely get sick unless you have poor oral hygiene." Beyond death, you risk being readmitted to the hospital for pneumonia--which is the result of the accumulation of fluid in your lungs. ABSOLUTELY incorrect information; PLEASE reinform yourself.

Yeah, I have a feral cat who looks like a Siamese but we don’t really know what she is… but she likes most things citrus, like oranges and lemons, idk about limes though. She always harasses me if I have a orange creamsicles icecream bar because she wants some of it She doesn’t like most of the things her siblings like, she doesn’t really seem to like bacon that much but likes chicken and fish, she won’t eat any beef, her siblings on the other hand eat just about anything and one of her brothers likes candy like nerds and sometimes lollipops. They are little fiends

I'm a speech-language pathologist and we're actually the ones who recommend what consistency patients should drink! SLPs often assess a patient's swallowing after the patient has had a stroke or a surgery. Depending on what signs of dysphagia we see (like coughing or choking after taking a sip, or actually seeing liquid go down the wrong way using x-ray or a camera) we recommend thin (regular) liquids, nectar-thick (slightly thick), honey-thick (moderately), or not allowed to drink anything. Thicker liquids move more slowly and provide more sensation in the mouth and throat, so they're generally easier to control and safer to swallow. Unfortunately studies have shown that patients who have to drink thicker liquids are more likely to be dehydrated, because the stuff is unappetizing. Gel thickener is better than powdered thickener because the powder often clumps up.

Love the video and this is a total side comment but as a speech pathologist (healthcare provider who works with people who have dysphagia) I want to raise awareness that thick liquids can still cause people with dysphagia to choke/aspirate silently (without coughing) and it is actually more dangerous to aspirate than regular liquids. Thick liquids should never be prescribed without first getting imaging (e.g., under x-ray) of someone's swallow function and seeing whether thick liquid actually helps them swallow better. And even then, it should be a discussion between the patient and speech pathologist about whether they want to go on thick liquid or continue drinking thin liquid understanding the risks and how they can mitigate those risks. There are also multiple levels of thickness that should be specified to the person's dysphagia. Anyway this is SUCH a complex topic so I just don't want anyone with swallowing issues to think this is an automatic fix without consulting a speech pathologist first.
