    I once planted 3 catnip plants in a planter for a cute little stray who would hang out on our porch. The next morning he was passed out in the planter with dirt on his face. He had eaten all three plants, roots and all.

    I have one cat who gets twitch-skin like symptoms when she’s stressed and catnip brings her out of an episode. We’re super careful not to touch her hind legs and to keep petting gentle and to the head, chest, and belly- her favorite- normally so the only times it happens is when our routine shakes up or something else is making her super stressed. There’s also a cat who never went un-feral despite being an indoor cat after my sister got her who also gets catnip to help with her anxiety. Mellows her out and balances her appetite and fear aggression, though I’m now “borrowing” her for some personal training and help that I suspected my sister was not giving her all those years. Slow going but she’s getting more confident and we’re relying less on occasional catnip for bolder behavior and more just play to distract her from stressors.

    My cat loves catnip. I actually used it to coax her into the carrier before we had to go to the vet. But don't want to do that every time because I want her to want to go in the carrier because she's comfortable in there.

  • @silenthades

    @silenthades

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ktctgrl4jsus What I do with my cats so they’re used to carriers is keep them out in the open with a bed inside, usually on top of a side table, shelf, or other place I know they like to sleep. I don’t make it a “vet only” thing, but a comfort and safe place thing. The kinda feral that my sister has me cat-sitting was always hiding so I set up the cat room and put a carrier with a bed in it on the ground near where I knew she would instinctively hide under the dresser. She started to prefer the bed in the carrier and got really territorial over it, so I moved it on top of the dresser and now she’s a lot more confident and uses it as a normal bed so when I pat the inside of it, she goes inside willingly. Took less than a month for the transition from floor to shelf, and we’re part way through the second month and now she gets in on command, no catnip necessary. ^~^

She’s now so brave she’s willing to come meet guests and let them pet her and gets along with our other stray rescue (Mouse) so well they’re thick as thieves now. No longer hiding in a closet or under a couch all day every day, she’s now our second most outgoing cat (second only to Mouse) and our biggest cuddler. Her anxiety is still an “issue”, but we manage it through a feedback thing where she’ll come over and boop her nose against my finger whenever she gets scared and we’ll just sit there with repeated boops and good girls until she feels better. It started as me using the boops to distract her from paranoid aggression and now she does it to tell me she’s feeling anxious and needs loves. :}

    I have two cats who love catnip. They get silly, they rub in it, they'll sort of play together, but just cuddle and groom one another in the end. My third cat is a very skittish cat that has taken time learning how to approach her. She thankfully doesn't get hyper aggressive and the other cats give her space other than random times where she'll give a soft swat (no hisses! yay!) and they'll stare at each other and walk on. But with catnip...she bit THROUGH my finger. My other cats, you can give them catnip out of your hand and they're VERY gentle, even with treats. She bit straight through my nail. So it's good to see a video like this to bring a little more understanding about it. After that, I'd made sure my kiddos knew that she was a no catnip'er and so we adjusted the way everyone interacted with her so that she's comfortable and set up for success.

    All my furry felines love Catnip. Any size shape or form. From catnip bubbles to catnip treats, balls, straight from the garden, dried and tied or in a toy. None become aggressive. All of them roll in it first. Then eat a bit, then groom excessively and then finally sleep. Purring contentedly! Hilarious to watch all 11 of them. Couple of times a week. Tho they have toys always available they help themselves to. They choose the catnip toys mostly to throw around.

We also have mountain lions here, so maybe I could try growing indoors instead.

    My 12 month old male kitten becomes sleepy straight away with catnip! Minimal happy drunk reaction, he eats it and rubs his head in it a couple of times and then lays down and falls asleep, it has a gentle sedative effect on him. Silvervine powder though? Now that's a whole other story! He gets super excited and bunny kicks anything that moves, he gets super playful and energetic and wants to sink his teeth into soft toys immediately. Then he settles after about 10 minutes and sleeps again. As soon as he gets a sniff of silvervine even before I open the bag I store it in, he tries desperately to grab it and is so impatient he starts clawing to get it. Not aggressively but very insistent to reach it, like it's his biggest desire in the world. Cats really do live in the moment!

My new kitty was recently diagnosed with Ovarian Remnant Syndrome. Awaiting on her upcoming surgery to redo her spay. My former cat Emma didn't react to catnip until she was almost three years old. Then, one day when I put some out for her brothers, she went nuts. In very short order, I had a green cat, she'd rolled it in so much. We used to have another cat who would be well, catatonic. He would sit on a chair, or wherever, as tall as he could make himself, and stare into space, unmoving and unresponsive for yes, around fifteen minutes. Feline reactions to catnip are truly idiosyncratic, and a neverending source of fun for humans whose homes are blessed by cats.

    Not related to video and don’t know if you’ll see it but just want to send a “Thank You!” to you Mr. Galaxy on behalf of myself and several kitties I’ve become friends with, in part, from your previous advice about their behavior, etc. Primarily the tail as energy meter tip; I have several cat friends that really amaze their owners by how much they seem to like me, and I’m certain it’s simply because I simply pay attention to their tail action and stop when they are approaching “full” on their stimulation/energy reading based on their tail movement. Often I’ll give them a well received few scratches and pets until they start the tail twitch and then just rest my hand close until they re-initiate or seem recuperated. It’s amazing how much they seem to appreciate my attempt to avoid overstimulation. One friend’s kitty has a low tolerance for interaction but just loves sitting close to me. It’s so fascinating to watch. She’s such a sweet kitty but just was so poorly understood! Now her owners understand her more too and everyone is just to much happier, making quality of life for all so much better. Thanks again!

    With our cat I had given him some catnip and noticed that he got very reactive in his play he was more likely to swat you with his nails or bite you while on catnip. So I decided to stop giving it to him then later I found some other cabinet that was 100% organic grown in Canada and there was no extra filler in it. He absolutely loves his stuff and it just kind of chills him out and takes some of his anxiety right too. I have tried silver fine he gets actually aggressive with that but I found honeysuckle and he absolutely loves the stuff so now I give him honeysuckle with a little sprinkled catnip over the top and he is a happy camper for at least 4 to 5 hours. Now I'm trying to help him with his anxiety especially his separation anxiety. If we leave the house even if the only one person the other one staying home He will sit at the door to the garage and not move until we get back and he's just crying like crazy. We were told to give him gabapentin by the vet that kind of does a little sedate him to use daily. So I'm on the hunt for something that will work for him but not change his personality.

    Valerian really helped when my cat had Hyperesthesia! (at least i think it was) It was really sad seeing her hurt herself and hallucinate, it lasted very long too. I thought i might distract her with valerian one time. She ate it and fell asleep in like 10 minutes, after that the seizure was gone. She doesnt have this anymore because but everytime she did have an episode valerian helped, i recommend.

    One of my cats, Remy, was the angry drunk. He was a huge bully on catnip. Another one of my cats, Amour, throws up if he eats catnip. Amour is now almost 15 and still reaponds to catnip, (I don't let him eat much so he doesn't throw up), but he responds less now then my younger cat, Marina-Bunny. I think all my cats throughout the years have responded to catnip once they were mostly grown up. Also, I used to take valarian myself. He's right! It smells horrid! But my cats always seemed super interested. I always wondered why they wanted something that smelled so bad.

    Zorro (RIP old man) was the happiest hippie in his own patch of fresh catnip. That patch grew like weed and he'd graze that weed until he was blissed out and just rolled back and forth in the catnip, completely marinating himself in the stuff.

    We had a kiwi tree/bush in our backyard (it looked a bit weird and didn't grow fruits, because it really wasn't the right climate). My mom often complained about holes around the roots until we found out that our cats and pretty much every cat in our area just went to town on them. They unearthed the roots, chewed them up and rolled in it like there was no tomorrow. We gave root cuts to friends with cats, same every time.

    My girl enjoys catnip, but it does often bring out her aggression. She's kind of a bully to my roommate's older cat, who doesn't respond to nip at all. She prefers silver vine, while my girl is somewhat indifferent. I find that the spray stuff tends to bring out the goblin in her even moreso, making her uncharacteristically hiss and growl when annoyed. The naturally growing stuff we found one day during a harness walk seems to produce a calmer effect, but I don't want to grow it, because it's a very invasive weed. I've tried valerian root on both of them, but there wasn't much response. Although, this could be because the root was a few years old. Got it at an herbal store about five years ago for my previous cat, who enjoyed it very much. I don't mind the smell, so much as the pointy chips they come in. If you accidentally get that stuff in your carpet, I promise, your bare feet will regret it. Never heard of Tartarian Honeysuckle, but I'll give it a try. Anything to make my girls happy. Plus, the name sounds cool. ^_^ I see that Jackson sells his own chipped brand of the stuff, but I'd like to just find a solid chunk of wood. Again, splinters suck.

    So I have a catnip plant by the front door, where the cat likes to hang out on sunny mornings. She never eats it, but rolls around in it. It took her a YEAR to figure it out. Prior I woul take some leaves and rub them on her scratching post - which she loved. But then one day, by accident, she rolled on a frond that was leaning over, and bingo!.She then tried rolling around "near" the plant for a few weeks, which was hit and miss, until she finally got it. Now she sometimes wades right into the middle of the plant and has a role around. (BTW - she is a sleepy, happy drunk)

    To add to the anecdotes. My cat is male and reacts to nip. He is definitely the 'fight someone in the lot at 2am' type when sober, but when nipped out he gets really chill and just lays in his bed licking his toys. He's always lovey to me though, 100% of the time. He gets violent to others who arnet as good with him. Generally I don't find nip to be much special for him. It gives him a little weed buzz then it wears off and doesn't affect him for a day.

    I have catnip or 'catcrack' (due to its affect on my 16yr old Norwegian) plant in a sunken pot in the garden, covered in a upturned handing basket to stop them killing the plant when they roll on it. often on sunny days you can find my boy and the neighbours cat on their backs together rubbing over the basket - like a cat opium den. he turns his nose up to shop bought nip/vine. Valerian treats are a must about 20mins before travelling to vets etc. great for anxious cat.

    I have tried both catnip and valerian with my cat and as if by some weird magic - no response whatsoever to either of them. My male cat (may his soul rest in peace) loved catnip, so I usually gave it to him on special occasions (when I first introduced it to him, it wasn't a special occasion but more to see if he would even react to it and he was about a year old when he got to try it the first time) such as birthdays and the holidays we celebrated and he always got really playful so I had to make sure I had a toy close or hope that my female cat was in the mood to play. I used the dry stuff because I never managed to get my hands on a live plant and I never gave too much of it to my male, just a little pinch and he was very playful for like 10 minutes and after that he groomed a bit and went to sleep.

If it's not nice & green & smelly for you, it won't impress them, either. If it looks & smells like sawdust, don't bother. BTW...catnip is edible for people. Catnip tea...😁Catnip reactions have been linked to sexual maturity.
