Catholics and the Culture of Contempt

Friends, what fuels our modern “culture of contempt,” so prevalent online? And how can Catholics resist it? A helpful new book by John Allen, Jr., Catholics and Contempt, seeks to answer those questions, and on today’s “Word on Fire Show” I discuss the book with Brandon Vogt.
A listener asks, do the three transcendentals include unity?

07:25 | Why Catholics participate in the culture of contempt
09:00 | The shadow side of "cheap speech"
11:20 | Why contempt is so attractive, even to Catholics
13:28 | William Lane Craig's model of engagement

Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also. Fr. we Catholics need to always remember that the way to Our Lord Jesus Christ is the 'royal way of the Holy Cross'. This world hated Him, it will also hate us. We need to learn to find joy in our sufferings as did the Saints for they unite us most closely to Christ's passion. We need to learn to suffer well (e.g. Saint Lawrence - 'Turn me over', 'I'm done on this side!'). "If so ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and immoveable from the hope of the gospel which you have heard, which is preached in all the creation that is under heaven, whereof I Paul am made a minister. *Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church* " The Head of the Church, Jesus Christ, already suffered. His Church, the faithful, must still go through our passion. The Head and the Body are not separate. The Litany of Humility prayed with devotion Fr. helps remind us of this. God bless you. May the Lord give us the grace to stand strong against temptation and to be full of His joy in the face of the trials we will encounter in this sojourn.

I’ve learned a lot from my son, now 24, about how they view social media. Many don’t care what they say or to whom, and/or take it upon themselves to be agitators to stir others up intentionally. Engaging with them is impossible in that mindset. But with prayer, the love of God, and the Holy Spirit to guide, we can discern. Thanks for what you do. 🙏

Be it known: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

@@alanadam718 There are large swathes of Roman Catholics that seemed to have brought into the moral relativism despite Pope Benedict XVI warning. We all need to agree on some essentials. In Summa Theologica II.II, Thomas Aquinas asserts the following correspondences between the seven Capital Virtues and the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: The gift of wisdom corresponds to the virtue of charity. The gift of understanding corresponds to the virtue of faith. The gift of counsel (right judgement) corresponds to the virtue of prudence. The gift of courage corresponds to the virtue of fortitude. The gift of knowledge corresponds to the virtue of hope. The gift of Reverance corresponds to the virtue of justice. The gift of Wonder and Awe corresponds to the virtue of temperance. Can we at least agree on this?

I've read biographies of Lincoln and Truman. Both men could get angry and sit down and write a response in the heat of the moment but they had the wisdom to set the letter aside and review it maybe a day later. Most remained unsent.

During my most viscious work conflict I took it to my favorite confessor (RIP). When I said, " Yeah, I know, I have to love my neighbor..." He stopped me, "No. You must love her as JESUS loves her." I felt the sharp pain in my chest, the shortness of breath. I felt heaven's potential slip from my grasp. He was absolutely right, but o-u-c-h. Talk about the narrow way. O-U-C-H!

I gave up Facebook for Lent this year…it was great! Felt so free of the constant negativity out there. It was surprisingly not hard to do once I made the decision to do it. Taking the app off my phone/ipad also helped to avoid the temptation. I love the idea of giving it up for a month to detox every now and then. I wish teens had the strength to do this, as there is so much yuck facing them. So many benefits to social media, but just as many harmful negatives!

Never went back, though I am a big KZread fan and have my own channel where I post my vlogs and music and try to stick to edifying content, but it is Hard work keeping unwanted content from appearing in my KZread feed. I will also admit that when questionable content appears, my curiosity often gets the best of me.

The culture is waiting for the Church to speak truthfully on Catholic Social Teaching and her members are instead remaining silent, out of fear or pride. Things will continue to decline rapidly so long as we remain silent about the economic abuse of the young and working class. Period. It’s so simple it’s easy to look right past it.

I agree with the fundamental ideas brought up in this podcast. I also skimmed through the Vatican guidance on social media. Having been on the internet since the pre-Facebook days, I don’t think that it’s possible to de-toxify the internet/social media, in general or a personal way. It’s not even about just us making an example and shifting the culture. It’s not about it being hard, it’s that the incentives and communication style built into social media cannot be taken out of it without some insanely extreme design changes. In addition to the incentives, shallow response limitations, and necessary algorithms, social media also has none of the moderating effects of having real-life interactions with people. We don’t even know who “our neighbor” is in any meaningful way online (beyond a vague conceptual “neighbor” who you never really meet or see their humanity). I’m on a more realist/pessimistic side of this discussion, but I see only 2 ways of dealing with the dumpster fire that is social media that won’t just be blood sports: 1) only be in the least controversial groups online. 2) get offline and just live the way the Lord intended us.

I often just get angry, make myself look like a fool, then block the person. Thanks for this dialogue. It's good to know that not all catholics are the fire-and-brimstone, righteous fury type.

I'm not a Christian, yet I do find value in these WOF conversations. I don't always agree and yet I always learn something new. In regards to this topic of the culture of contempt, everyone, no matter what your belief system, would be wise listen to this and take to heart the main messages here, In a nutshell: Be kind, and do no harm. Yes, express your views but take time to think them through first. Avoid the knee jerk reaction. Feel free to disagree with someone and yet avoid the temptation to run the another person down with dehumanizing put downs and insults. Is it easy. Nope. But don't let that stop you. And yes, I did pause a good minute before sending this message. Thank you for posting this video,

If I respond to inaccuracies about the Catholic faith, I try to state the facts out of love. In the end after a snarky comment regarding the facts, I tell the person or people that God loves them very much, and I share the simple gospel message. When more hate comes in response, I turn off notifications on the post. You never know who might have a change of heart about God and the Catholic Church when they read my response. It might be a long shot, but replying with love no matter the hate spewed is always the way to comment if a Catholic comments. When someone is snarky or hateful, it shows more about them than the person they spew at. I haven't always responded that way in the past. But at one point, I had a change of heart, and remembered that we must be different and understand that sharing God's love and offer of salvation to everyone in a non accusatory, humble way is our calling. I say it in a universal way and do not make it personal toward the other person.

I used to be what you might call “terminally online.” I was in a whole bunch of “shaming” Facebook groups (e.g., “That’s it, I’m wedding shaming” and many others) and also some Catholic sh*tposting groups. I was none too kind to online strangers, but I often justified my meanness by telling myself that I was defending the faith online. For example, I might get into flame wars with pro-choice people, and I’d believe that my cyberbullying was somehow Christian in nature (LOL). I gave up social media for Lent this year, and I never reactivated my accounts after Easter. I’m so much happier, kinder, and more focused on what really matters these days. I actually have time for exercise, prayer, and hobbies because I’m not doomscrolling and responding to inflammatory posts. My pro-life zeal is much better served by saying the rosary than by engaging in completely uncharitable arguments with online strangers. Sometimes I miss the ability to make a status and put my thoughts out there for people to praise or criticize, but I realize that what I was doing was seeking attention and indulging my pride. I don’t need to be heard all the time. More often than not, I need to listen and respond in love and kindness. Getting off social media has been the best thing for my spiritual life, my soul, and my overall happiness.

Very good! Lots of good advice especially w/respect to detoxing. Some of us can't 'give up our phones' even for a short time, like a month because, well, they're our phones now. But there's ways to reduce the addictive potential of the little evil genies and discourage mindless scrolling etc: Get a phone you don't like; one that's awkward to use and doesn't feel good in the hand. Then, get rid of the apps and turn off all the haptic feedback, alerts, notifications and sounds (except for the ringer if you need to answer the phone). Finally, cut your data to 1 gb and turn off mobile data. Yes, I am a junkie. Lost years to the screens back in the early 2k's before we knew how addictive it all is. Kicked the habit at some point and got a life. Then the smart phones came in....and I had to start all over again :) I think a lot of the crankiness on social media has a lot to do with people trying to get their dopamine fix ie trying to get the feel good machine to make us feel good again. It's worth noting that jumping through all kinds of hoop to limit the destructive potential of smart phones is a lot like functional alcoholics who stop by the liquor store on the way home from work every night and buys a pint even though its a lot more expensive than a larger bottle. But, she also knows if she brought the large bottle she'd drink the whole thing 'cause she doesn't have a code for stopping

Good point on the difficulty of expressing views 25 years ago. The ease of expressing opinion now is just as easy for the cynical or ill informed as it is for the sharp or insightful persons. Perhaps the real problem is that we are flooded with opinions, that we notice the loud and cynical views more, and that the quiet voice of reason and even revelation require time and thought that most are unwilling to give. We, in the aggregate, have a short span of attention and wish to be fed our thoughts in tiny and exciting mouthfuls. Our rejection of other views mirrors this mile-wide-foot-deep tendency.

I think oftentimes in the current social climate, we succumb to the pressure to respond or react quickly rather than delaying what will inevitably be an emotionally-driven response rather than an objective - dare I say fair-minded- response because in this current climate we fear that if we don’t our opportunity to have any voice in the matter at hand at all will be lost. Like that is our only chance to have our say, even if it is not an objective say. And that is tragic. A good, well-reasoned argument takes time to work out and communicate clearly and effectively (at least for some of us) and in our face-pace, rapid-fire social climate, it is hard to trust the process of wait-time prior to responding. And sometimes those who either pause before responding or just not responding at all are then deemed unintelligent and/or unenlightened. And that, too, is tragic. We are an impatient people.

I think one of most global crisis in philosophy today comes from STRANGE PHILOSOPHIES are who are conflating the idea of "ALLOWING struggles to bring growth" with "CAUSING struggles to bring growth." "ALLOWING struggles to bring growth" Is not the same as... "CAUSING struggles to bring growth." As Isaiah 5:20 clearly warns us, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”

This one really spoke to me. I tend to be such a perfectionist, thinking God can't possibly love me because I am NOT perfect enough for God's love. The scrupulosity of my seared conscience still hurts from so many things I failed at decades ago. God's love for us never changes. Yet my 'perception' of God's love seems to change in proportion to my own failures against His will. And in the worst cases, I 'feel' God hates me so much that I wonder why do I even bother trying to be perfect? In those moments I seem to cause accidents' on purpose in a weird effort to cause good. As Romans 3:8 says, "Their condemnation is deserved.” And when I do these things I am acting as if the more I sin, the better it is. But I really deserve to be condemned when I act that way.

I don't know if this is correct but it seems all Christians have an easy time believing that the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of Fire and another time as sounds of wind. God appeared as a burning bush is believed by most. Jesus comes as the BREAD And WINE but i think people can't believe it because IT IS GOD right there in hand and it is just too remarkable to comprehend. We have Jesus right there just as the disciples had the tongues of Fire appear on their heads. A miracle is happening right in our hands.
