Catholic OCD: The fear of Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

The ultimate sin, the biggest possible sin, the sin that causes the single most consternation and anxiety, is the fear of the unforgivable sin. Of course, men and women who suffer with OCD are going to eventually come face to face with this fear because it is the ultimate catastrophe. It is also one of the most misunderstood sins and often talked about and feared completely out of context.

@@donaldostrem4982 I've been there brother. I actually am there to some degree still, but I can tell you that God knows that none of these are your thoughts. If they were yours there would be no distress, but since you are distressed about them that is 100%proof that they are not from you. Remember John 6:37-40 "Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” You will get through this - take heart my friend. Seek out a Christian counselor who does ERP and CBT therapy as these are the standard treatments for OCD. God is not out to get you - He is out to LOVE you.

The thoughts slowly stopped when I started to answer every thought with another thought ” Jesus is Lord”. So for every intrusive thought Jesus Christ was instead honered as the Lord that He truly is. Andrew, you have to think outside the box. I went to a mental hospital for almost 3 yrs because of this. This was in 1971 when psychiatry didn't know obut OCD. Almost all my life I had obsessions. By 11, I was sure I had committed the sin against the Holy Spirit, merely by reading the verse in the Bible. When my belief about forgiveness changed, the obsession instantly disappeared, only to be replaced by another fear. I'm 66 yrs old now, and the fears change according to what I dread most. The anxiety feeds of my worst fears. The fear of commiting the sin against the Holy Spirit lasted till I was 17 yrs old. Looking back, it seemed strange that I spent so much time imagining something that is almost impossible for a faithful catholic to do. But, my brain held me hostage. Don't feed it. Keep your mind occupied with other things. Remember, you are the one keeping it alive by paying attention to the thoughts. God bless you!

In an OCD fit I was fighting terrible blasphemous thoughts and I said out loud several times the Holy Spirit is NOT "D***." Right after this I felt a total sense of dread because I felt like I was playing with my salvation and walking an incredibly fine line. I should have kept my mouth shut and fought the thoughts in my head. Could God think me to be a blasphemer? Have I inadvertently committed the unpardonable sin? About 3 months after this I had a dream where I blasphemed the Holy Spirit in my bathroom and I was fearful that this was confirmation from God that I had done this... I'm terribly worried and do not have the fruits of the spirit on my life, I am a mess. I have repented many times but I just feel loneliness and emptiness.

I just discovered this channel-very interesting. Father, can you expand more on your statement that God isn’t sitting there listening to our brain with a microphone? I assumed that because God is omnipotent, he would hear/know everything that comes into our head or how we think. Example: let’s say I had [willful] negative thoughts about someone. Would those thoughts not be a sin unless I made it “public” in some way? I would think that thinking negatively of someone is a sin (whether God heard it or not). Thanks!

Its telling lies about the holy spirit. To know the holy spirit and then to tell people the holy spirit is evil. Knowing without a doubt the goodness of the holy spirit and then to tell others the holy spirit is evil.

  • @BbBb-bs8wk

Blasphemy against the holy spirit is to speak against the holy spirit. For one to do this they would have to speak to someone lies about the holy spirit with witnesses listining. One would have to know the holy spirit and the truth of the holy spirit. This person would be saying words that work against what the holy spirit is doing here on this earth. This speach could potentially turn someone away from the holy spirit. This is an eternal sin because with the potential for this sin is that it could cause a person to perish without ever knowing the truth. This is not only a sin against God but its an act of evil against a brother or sister. This shows God there is not boundary in what one would do in terms of hurting another. This act is directed at God. This act is unforgivable because its potential to destroy anothers life. When we sin its usually a selfish reason behind our reason for sining. We know it harms us personally and we attempt to be self rightouse when it comes to harming others. The sin of blasphemy against the holy spirit is a sin of knowing without a doubt the truth and the reprocussion of rejecting the truth. Then proceeding to cause another to reject the source of goodness. Knowing the reprocussion for that person if they believe whats they are told. Even if they dont it shows God that person is completely against Gods works.

Regrettably it seems father did not consult the CCC, inward thoughts can be blasphemous 2148 Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one's speech; in misusing God's name. St. James condemns those "who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called." The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ's Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God's name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God's name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion. Blasphemy is contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. It is in itself a grave sin.
