Catfight: Bill O’Reilly Vs. George Will

More Fox News infighting. Bill O’Reilly has written a book about Reagan that George Will doesn’t find flattering enough. O'Reilly invited him on the show to hash it out. It took little time for these two liars and hacks to start calling each other liars and hacks. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"FOX News' Bill O'Reilly has a heated argument with network contributor George Will over his latest column which accuses the O'Reilly Factor host of slandering former President Ronald Reagan in his latest book, Killing Reagan.
"It is not a laudatory book," Will said about O'Reilly's Killing Reagan. "It is doing the work of the left which knows in order to discredit conservatism it must destroy Reagan's reputation as president. Your book does the work of the American left with its extreme recklessness."
"You're a hack," O'Reilly said to Will. "You are in with the cabal of the Reagan loyalists who don't want the truth to be told.””*

    For the record, Bill O'Reilly never said in his book that the trauma that Ronald Reagan endured as a result of the assassination attempt caused an early onset of Alzheimer's for him while he was still in office. He did say that the president was often times distracted, and unable to follow conversations in meetings and fatigued. On his really bad days he would not even come down from the residence in the White House. The gun shoot wound that came within four inches from his hart did diminish him and it may have eventually contributed to his onset of Alzheimer's disease but that doesn't mean that he had it while he was in office. According to the book, some of the members of the White House staff and some members of Reagan's family tested him at one point to see if they felt he could still perform his duties. They concluded that he could.

    I sat through all of this with an open mind until he started talking about all of the "liberal" things Reagan did. Yes, Reagan's name is invoked far too often by extremists on the right but he was also no liberal. I won't pick it apart piece by piece but will use Uygur's first claim, immigration amnesty, as an example. Reagan made a deal with the Democrats that controlled congress at the time that he would sign off on amnesty if border enforcement was stepped up and future illegals would be deported. Reagan kept up his end of the deal, the Dems did not. This, and many instances like this, are why the Democrats are no longer trusted and compromise deals are no longer made. Uygur is nothing but a leftist hack.

  • @josephsetorius3465

    @josephsetorius3465

    +Mark Bigelow I almost never respond on these pages, but I think...like the video... you initially hit the nail on the head. That he made sense until he started talking about the "liberal" things Reagan did. Not being a Democrat or Republican, and finding that my views do not easily fit comfortably into any current US political party-- including the Libertarian & Green parties, I find it easy to have an unbiased opinion in these kinds of debates. Where you start to lose me is when you talk about Reagan and his immigration policy, and the current environment of "no compromise". While I would not call any of the things Reagan did liberal, I am sure there are plenty of tea partiers, right wing Evangelicals, and ignorant people in the current GOP that would. Their religious or uneducated views...on just about anything...are rooted in emotion; not logic and reason. A Russell Train would not survive in today's GOP political climate...there would be no room for him. Republicans slowly began losing relevance the second they got in bed with the religious right, and those unwilling to compromise. Yet perhaps Barry Goldwater "deserves" the credit for this? It is like those idiotic bumper stickers I see that say "No compromise gun laws". Which is about the most un-American thing you can say...after all, without compromise, there would be no United States. Your argument about Democrats being no longer trusted, and hence the reason the Republicans have become the "do nothing" party, is juvenile and without solid basis; much like Bill O'Reilly's book. What we really have in this argument between Will & Bill, is the old rational conservative mature elements of the Republican party (Will), which are a necessary counterweight to the liberal Democrats; versus the whiney ignorant angry immature mob...feeding off its irrational emotion...(Bill). Which is obvious just watching the original clip. George is clearly more educated, articulate and knowledgeable; whereas Bill just looks like he is grasping at straws. Uygur may or may not be a leftist hack, but I would put him in the same camp...just on the left side of it...as O'Reilly. Whereas someone like Robert Reich would be more on par with George Will. I think, and hope, it is time for the Republicans to dump this weak tea overboard and into the harbor; much like the original patriots did on December 16, 1773. It is the only way the Republican Party will survive. I also hope, for your sake, you are on the side of reason, regardless of which side of the fence you feel more comfortable in.

    OK, I was onboard until Cenk Uygur starts enumerating the reasons, make that alleged reasons, why O'Reilly wrote the book -- to explain all the un-conservative things Reagan did. The problem with this theory is that Uygur is presenting those actions in the contexts of today, not the existing contexts. Immigration was not only a far smaller problem then, Reagan's deal hinged on action by Democrats to close the border. That never happened because Reagan trusted politicians who are untrustworthy. Hence his subsequent use of the phrase 'trust but verify'. Dealing with 'terrorists' and Iran. Both of those were in the context of a greater goal, crushing the Soviets, and at a time when both Iran and terrorism were of minor importance to the Americans. When Reagan's actions were viewed in context, any reason for today's conservatives to distance themselves from them disappears, and so does Uygur's alleged reasons for O'Reilly writing what he did. This is no defence of O'Reilly or criticism of Will, nor an I taking sides in a dispute I don't know enough about, not having read Killing Reagan.

  • @typodhitzemann6851

    +Brian Driscoll. It looks as though Reagan didn't 'verify'. When Obama deals with the same issues today(Thinking he has), then he catches all the fire in the world. As far as immigration being a smaller problem then - maybe wouldn't be as big of a problem now had it been dealt with properly then(?). We can easily say that today's immigration problems are small in 20 yrs time from now and excuse Obama/Bush and the rest whom throw it under the carpet. Dealing with terrorists is beyond the span of time. Terrorists were just as much a terrorist then, as they are now. Excuses for him dealing arms and deals w/ them are not excused. Then...or now. At root, you're correct in my opinion of your analysis. Yet cannot give Reps a pass for issues that are timeless. If this were the case, then we can excuse any or all of them in the future for what they do(or don't do) due to 'relevance' of the times. Some things can be that. But mostly, if any group is going to so harshly criticize and judge a sitting prez over such paramount issues....yet keep referring back to ppl like Reagan as the defining(and shining) example of how you do it right - Holds very little water. If he's not the right example, then don't mention him. They lose the argument overtime they invoke Reagan in these issues.

  • @briandriscoll1480

    @briandriscoll1480

    8 жыл бұрын

    +TyPod Context counts. Pretending it doesn't and evaluating issues with no context leads nowhere. It doesn't do to simply say terrorists were just as much a terrorist then as they are now. Terrorism, not individual terrorists, is the issue, and it is a greater issue today than in the '80s.

  • @typodhitzemann6851

    @typodhitzemann6851

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Brian Driscoll Ok, context counts. But I believe if pundits are going to judge today's issues in regards to past presidents as fair game, then we can't always excuse they're actions(or lack thereof) because of its pertinence to 'the times'. Sometimes it is pertinent to the times, but there are far too many issues in relation to Reagan and the subsequent deference by conservatives to him - especially in how he dealt with those issues. Its then fair game. If they see fit to defer, then its fair game to compare. Also, its not necessarily about what era it was, or the level of the problem. Its how they dealt with it. Certain problems are dealt with in a certain manner that transcends time. Other Presidents are analyzed and judged for their actions(or lack of). So is Reagan. It wasn't that long ago. Every President is still deferred and criticized for yesterday by todays standards on both sides of the isle, so its important that it all stop, or Reagan et al are fair game. In 30 yrs, they'll be doing the same thing with Obama.

    Let us remember one very pertinent fact regarding the belief systems and ideals of the political parties. They are fluid and have changed dramatically from Reagan's era till now, just as from Kennedy's era to Reagan's. Listen to any of Kennedy's speeches and then compare with popular Democratic ideology and practice of the 80's. Are they similar? Kennedy, I believe, would not associate himself with the Democratic party of today. Similarly, an examination of Reagan's speeches compared to current popular Republican ideology and practice are equally dissimilar. Both men rattled the respective party cages early in their administrations. So in the closing segment of an otherwise well presented unbiased summary, some bias enters negatively that would otherwise been neutral. That's just the way it was. However, Thanks for the insight to the cat fight, and keen analysis to the behind the words aspects and meaning. George Will has long been one of my favorite political writers/commentators since the late 70's. Partly due to his historical views and political stance (which also has changed over the years) but in great part for his eloquent command of language and nuance. Something Bill O'Reilly doesn't posses or perhaps even comprehend. To hear him call George Will a hack was akin to what Alice must've felt stepping through the looking glass...

    George Will is equally crude and disrespectful. On several instances, he berates people in T.V. shows when they have no way of defending themselves: 1. In 2005 immediately after interviewing Luis Farahkan on ABC's "This Week", and immediately after Farakhan left the show, in the very next segment George Will declares that Farakhan is a "Mad man" and should not be taken seriously. 2. He constantly makes snide comments about Hiliary Clinton on Fox and ABC news. In the 2000 Senate campaign for New York, he said that Mrs. Clinton lacks credibility and intellectual heft to walk in the footsteps of retiring Daniel P. Monnihan (I paraphrase). The tone and emphasis he uses is quite similar to what you see in O'Reilly. What goes around comes around - George Will got what he deserved.

    George Will was not "massively wrong". He never said in that quarrel he had with Bill O'Reilly that Reagan never changed his positions. President Reagan did what he thought best under the circumstances. In Lebanon his decision to cut his losses and leave was the sensible one. Same with his decision to increase taxes when he needed to. Reagan remained popular even when he did what was unpopular. People trusted him.

    Starbuck2015 - Reagan's approval rating was 52.8% when he left office in January 1989. The Iran-Contra affair changed many people's view on how much he had left in the tank. Reagan's popularity has grown significantly with Republicans since he left office, especially when compared to Bush 41 and 43. Btw, Bush 41's approval rating was 61% when he left office, for what it's worth.

    The whole world was in recession in the 1970's whilst Reagan was lucky to get elected as it ended yet despite that although he cut taxes aka trickle down economics the government was soon left with a massive debt to pay for everything Reagan was doing such as the military budget raising to 6% of GDP a rate usually only seen at a time of major war which is why although he dropped taxes mostly for the rich he also ended up raising taxes as well, 11 times in fact yo try and balance the books yet despite this shockingly Reagan took the US from being the world's largest creditor nation to being the word's largest debtor nation and he added more debt in his presidency than all 39 Presidents before him combined but you wont learn that from the romanticised history that has been created around Reagan. Prior to Reagan the US did great and even thru world recessions its economy still grew by at least 1% whilst the last time the USA economy went up the shitter was when Presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover did an earlier version of massive tax cuts which led to the Great Depression, the poverty rate increasing massively, social mobility levels getting worse. Just as Reagan like policies led to the Great Depression, George W Bush copied St Reagan and we got the 2007-08 Great Recession and now Trump plans the same and we can already see the Wall Street balloon being blown up again with the clock ticking until it to explodes in the near future for tax payers to bail out Trump's elitist friends again.

    Oh, the irony of O'Reilly calling anyone a hack. He doesn't even write his books himself; all his tripe fests are ghostwritten by Martin Dugard. These books are filled with conspiracy theory, unsubstantiated claims, and historical inaccuracies. People may not agree with George Will politically, but he's an accomplished Pulitzer-winning writer with an impressive professional and academic resume (his articles on baseball are well written). He may be wrong on some subjects in my view, but at least he brings some intellectual rigor to his comments and writing.

    Knowing my interest in history, a relative gave me a copy of O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln. It's not that I couldn't finish it; I couldn't even begin it. I opened it long enough to realize that for some reason O'Reilly wrote it (a history book) in the present tense and that he had nothing cited. It doesn't even pretend to be a serious work of history. Nope.
