    The 3408 in my 1980 KW has done around 80,000 hours, still going strong! Careful maintenance, proper startup and shutdown procedure, bearing rolls at correct intervals, SOS oil sampling are the keys to long life, plus Caterpillar’s legendary quality of build.

    my dad had a 1936 Cat 22 that he found outside of a coal mine in Idaho in the 1990s. he restored that thing completely, even down to every single bolt. from what he has told me, it idled at about 100rpm flawlessly, but that was 25 years ago. last I heard, it was in a private museum down in Colorado Springs

    Hard to get a long history like that boiled down to 8 minuets, but you managed to do it. Would have liked to have delved deeper into some of those machines especially some of the older ones, but that will have to be another video, maybe add " Card " links to some of those other machines, if they have there own videos. Happy Birthday , Caterpillar.

    Got an old 1949 D4, with the original diesel engine. Never been overhauled. Starts and runs like a top, assuming I can get the pony motor going!

  • @keithammleter3824

    @keithammleter3824

    Жыл бұрын

    Watch it! I had a similar age D4 too. White gunk blocks the water passages of the pony engine in old D4's. The first symptom is the diesel taking longer to start due to not getting all the pony heat. Then the pony gets ruined due to lack of cooling. Pony engines should start easy - if it doesn't, probably points need adjustment, or carby needs cleaning.
