This is a very special Lovecars video, as we take a look back at a very exciting and competitive season in the Caterham Academy, with all the thrills and plenty of spills! We review Paul Woodman's first racing season, with racing expert, Tiff Needell!
We start at the Curborough Sprint it seemed Paul was well prepared for the 2021 season ahead, with a practice track setup ahead of the event. But sadly, our man who was lying 3rd until the final round, had a puncture which resulted in Paul slipping to 4th place.
Then we moved onto Mallory park, our first proper race, with 25 cars on the grid! Paul had a great qualifying and started 4th on the grid after focusing on getting a tow. He had a phenomenal start and managed to challenge for the lead in the first lap, before proceeding to out brake himself and ended up on the grass, knocking him back into 11th place. The finish ended up being a photo finish for 7th!
Onto Knockhill in June. Scotland gave us some nice weather, and following a 4th place qualifying result, Paul squeezed the front two runners and took 1st place for the first few laps! It was at this race that Paul made a rude gesture to another driver. Not the highlight of his racing career! He dropped a few places after being off the pace, and finished in 5th. On the Sunday, the race began anticlockwise, with an average start from Paul. What proceeded was potentially the biggest crash in the Caterham Academy this year! That was a real testament to the Caterham cars, as Paul escaped relatively unscathed.
The race that followed was the biggest race of the season. The home of British Formula 1, Silverstone. With both the white and green groups on track, with 50 cars racing! With Tiff presenting, Paul unfortunately had his worst qualifying of the season, achieving 10th place, but starting 19th overall on the grid. Another fantastic start from Paul in the race, but lost the tow at Becketts, undoing Paul's overtakes in the first few laps. Paul then had a racing incident with a driver from another group that put him further back in the pack.
The next round was at Brands Hatch, where Paul qualified 5th overall! After the incident at Silverstone, Paul's confidence has been knocked, resulting in a poor start. Paul tried a lunge and ended up nearly spinning, losing him a few places. What followed was a few further bad moves, clipping other drivers and forcing Paul to spin.
We moved onto Croft, where Paul had no plans to attend the race due to his Daughter's Birthday. Caterham allowed us to race on the Sunday, despite not qualifying. So Paul drove left at 4am to drive to Croft, did 15 minutes qualifying and ended up achieving 10th place. It ended up being the race Paul enjoyed the most, finishing in 7th, following by a 5 hour drive home.
The final race was a double header at Snetterton, where the Championship for both the White and Green groups was on the line. After qualifying in 4th place, Paul had another epic start, but with a brake leak, he was robbed of his chance at a podium and finishing in 7th! In the second race, Paul had another really good start, finishing in 4th overall.
We have to mention a few drivers that we felt did particularly well in the 2021 season! Most Improved Driver - Mark Williams
Best Driver - Freddie Chiddicks
Most Spins - Joe Priday
Most fun in the Paddock - Paul Castle

8:05 - two circuits I've raced at that can be done both ways - Oregon Raceway Park and Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Both are fairly minor circuits though. Both suit Caterhams really well - ORP is one of my favourite tracks with some big elevation changes. I have also heard of people doing Llihrednuht (i.e. Thunderhill backwards) but there's some really sketchy turns doing it that way round, so it's not common, and I don't think they ever actually race that direction.

23:50 - odd - I've never heard of or experienced knockoff in a Caterham. I know the E30 chaps talk about it all the time, and I see them flashing their lights down the straight, but never in a Seven. I drive the equivalent of a 420R - is there something special about the Academy brake setup that can cause it?

It's quite common Tom, but possibly some drivers are more sensitive to it (including myself!). It's just down to the amount of deflection the wheel bearing allows on the hub/disc. I've fitted anti-knockback springs in my AP calipers which helps but usually I still find a brush of the pedal with the left foot along a straight gets the brakes nice and ready for the next corner.

I really thought you were going to get away it at Knockhill! Loved Brands and the oversteer moments. Great driving Paul and fair play to driving all the way to/from Croft, main thing is you had fun.
