I rode out this storm and have watched a lot of video of it. This video captures the feeling of this storm better than any other I have seen. It gets bad, then it gets worse. Then it gets worse; and just when you think it can't get any worse, it gets worse. The part that many people don't realize is, as exhausting as the first part was, when you show the eye, that's only halfway through the storm. I was just west of the eye, about 5-10 miles west of you, so I didn't get a break. It was non-stop for 3 or 4 hours. Great video. Thank you for posting it!

@@onesoldierserving I wish I was there visiting chasing the storm even though I am not a chaser per se. Would have gone to Parker or Callaway. No I’m not that smart. No the difference is not night and day that’s for sure.

I'm from Florida and have been here all my life. I've been through so many hurricanes with my personal worst being Charlie and we took a direct hit. I can't see how you guys can be out in one of these storms like this. Here I am hiding under my bed shaking and you guys are out in it seeing everything as it unfolds. Just amazing. Thanks for posting the footage. Even though it brings back bad memories it's still awesome to watch.

I remember charlie, i was 13 when that hit. My family went to orlando to escape it, boy did we make a mistake. Took a direct hit, amd it was my first time experiencing the eye of a hurricane. Will never forget that storm.

Awesome stuff Derek (I bet you needed underwear OR Preparation H after that)! Glad you ran over to that CVS before the eyewall hit across from our hotel. This was Route 22 in Callaway at the Holiday Inn Express / CVS. Just incredible winds approaching gusts of near 160 mph. No weather instrument can catch these gusts before failing :)

Im not. I want Michaels twin back even if not in the same aarea so I can go chase it. Come on dont be a wimp. If there is another cat 5 which we will see more of in the future and more frequently go see it and try to get the eye on film

Although I think you have to be a little crazy to have stayed outside filming this, I appreciate being able to see what a storm can do. I particularly appreciate that you kept your camera, for the most part, on the same unprotected trees because that allows for a greater appreciation of what sustained storm winds are capable of doing. Piece meal videos don't have the same impact as seeing continuous winds on a single view. So, thank you. I live part time on the coast only miles south of Mexico Beach and Panama City. I will never stay when a hurricane is coming and will leave in plenty of time to reach a safe distance and a safe direction inland--even for a low category hurricane. Some people laugh at such caution but unless it is your job to stay, no material object or bravado is worth risking one's life or someone else's life who may have the job of trying to rescue you during or after a storm's done its damage.

Unless you are near the water there is no need to evacuate. Im not a storm chaser but wish I could have that day back and see Michael. Hopefully there will be another cat 5 soon somewhere on the Gulf Coast.

Awesome footage!!! You guys are lucky to be alive. I live in Pensacola so we did not get much of Michael but the footage reminds me of hurricane Ivan back in 2004. Only thing is the worst wind from Ivan was in the middle of the night which made it even more scary.

You are alot braver than most people! Glad you survived the Cat 5 Hurricane Michael. 🙂 Great video. The power of Mother Nature is just amazing. Truly awe inspiring.

Wonderful storm wasn’t it? Next time a will chase the hurricane for fun and hopefully it will be very similar to this.

Lest we forget, I am a first person eyewitness of Camille, in 19;69 developing from a minor storm off Tampa Bay to a beast between the hours of 12-3AM. It then slammed into a completlly unaware sleeping population and washed out entire communities including their police and city hall. They were awoken from sleep to be erased from history. No one knows how many were lost. My Father-in-law had to tearfully bury his neighbors in their homes bcz the devastation was so great and the resource so few at that time. I don't understand why every account I've seen of Camille down plays this tragedy. It Robs us of valuable information about the potential dangers of these storms.

I don't know how you missed them, but over the years I've seen multiple documentaries on Hurricane Camille. None of them have "down played" the disaster. I was in Panama City when Camille hit. It was big news and warnings were in place. Incredibly, by your account, some people didn't get the word. But, it is well documented that some of the fatalities were among participants of "hurricane parties". Those people clearly knew a storm was coming, although they obviously didn't give it the respect it deserved. Camille had a storm surge at least double that of Michael's, which resulted in the utter destruction seen in Mississippi. Camille also resulted in about five times as many fatalities in the US than Michael. I live east of Panama City, near where this video was made. The area has been severely damaged. Two weeks without power (no air conditioning/refrigeration), and two months without internet...just got mine back a couple days ago. Nearly all of the trees and houses are damaged. The tree loss alone will change the face of Panama City for decades or generations. The fact that Michael was devestating in no way down-plays the historic Hurricane Camille. They should serve to motivate people in the paths of these storms to take them seriously. Peace

I lived in Callaway, Fla. My Apartment was blown to bits and now they plan to bull doze it. I am staying with Family in Georgia while I decide what to do. It is devastating enough to lose your home to a Hurricane but I was also looted. I worked so hard (on my own) for years for what I had but someone thought they were "entitled" to my possessions. Yes, I survived and yes they were material things BUT they were MY things not yours!! To my looter(s): my Girlfriend Karma has never let me down!!

What’s astounding it went from a tropical depression to a Cat 5 in less than 48 hours. I believe a lot of people that lived there never thought it was not going over a Cat 2 and by the time they realized it, it was too late to leave!

We live in Panama City. Yours is the first video I’ve seen that accurately conveyed what it was like. White out conditions outside our south facing windows. We had the north and west windows boarded up. Amazing video!

Mark Vrahotes I live in Panama City, not Panama City beach. I would have to disagree with that. And I sure wouldn’t begin it with “fortunately”. Every light pole for miles taken out. Over 3/4 of the trees down in the entire town. Our home damaged so badly that we just now moved back into the front half. I have photos and video of my own if it will help to convey my point.

A very good footage, the only other TC of comparable intensity to hit the country this century was Charley in 2004 (but max winds affected a smaller area then, since the eye was minimal). Even if we count the N Atl as a whole, there were not many stronger landfalls, with some exceptions like Felix, Dean, Irma - islands - and Maria - Dominica landfall - (all in "7 ending" years) and few others as strong like Gustav (Cuba). But Maria's clear/daytime landfalling eye is what made this storm really unique. To the east of your location the view was amazing.

There's another video that shows the CVS that much of this was shot in front of (from 3:40 to 15:17), after the hurricane had passed. The front doors were entirely blown in; one of the trees in the parking lot was knocked down; the sign was still standing but with just empty holes. The parked SUV at 3:26 has had one window broken, but much worse was going to come - the entire entry roof of this hotel was blown apart and much of it landed on the same vehicle. I saw a newspaper photo of the bald guy driver sitting in it afterwards, surrounded by debris.

Not sure if you watched til the end, but at 15:50 he shows the final damage from that hotel entrance collapse. Shitty how it's there for people to park under for a little added safety and then it ends up making things worse.

That actually wasn’t the “final damage” because this part was shot the eye of the hurricane, so the storm was only half over at this location. When damage like this happens, you clearly see that what looks like a really substantial structure is actually just wood framing underneath with stuff on the outside that looks like it's strong.

I live in Callaway and I can tell you that video shows just a tiny bit of what happened. It still looks like a war zone here! About 90% of the buildings in the area were damaged. It's going to take years to clean up and repair it all. It's amazing more people didn't die in the storm.

I made it through hurricane Ike...and when they say a hurricane sounds like a train... trust me it does!! I was scared to death 💀😭...oh yeah I am subscribing because this is awesome 😎

That's the same convenience store I drive by every time Ieave the house. It's been repaired and is in operation. I have to wonder if Reed screamed it into destruction, or if it was the hurricane.

I'll never forget the sounds of the wind howling and tearing apart my roof, we had a huge sycamore tree fall on the house and impale the through the roof and you couldn't even hear it because the wind was so loud.

I lived in Callaway and was home when Hurricane Michael hit. The video in my opinion doesn't depict what it felt like to be there. The wind, the rain it felt like satan's breath as it ripped parts of my roof away and engulfed us in its fury. I will leave next time. I am having a difficult time dealing with what has happened.

This is the most up close storm video I've ever seen, next to being very close to a killer tornadoe,I still thank God for sparing my life....so many many times we have very little thought about how blessed we are....these folks who made this video, seen the power of a storm that could kill them any second.....give God thanks with a grateful heart,but also, as I have personally many times went thru giant tribulations, I now give God thanks for baubles faith built in him alone....i bet, people were close to god, during this....ww need to keep praying for families who lost loved ones in this storm,that they reach out and hold so close to god,

This is the most terrifying and exhilarating weather video I've ever seen! Things start out looking real bad.....and then get way worse.

I rode this storm out not far from where this was filmed. That is EXACTLY how it felt: it started out kinda bad, but then it got worse. Then you kind of made peace with how bad it was. Then it got worse. Over and over. For 3 or 4 hours. It is difficult to describe. This video captures it very well. From minute 11 to minute 1145 is a good representation.

I ended up holding a piano against a door that was blowing in along with two other men. So, there was just too much work to do to think. But, there were moments...

Please, for all of you who observe the hurricane wind reports: it is always important to discern between a peak wind gust and a "gust speed". A lot of people hear about wind gust of 150 MPH but don't realize that these reports could either be a peak gust or a gust speed. For example, during Hurricane Wilma while a reporter was out in the wind, if you looked at the bottom of the TV screen you would have seen that the wind was 48 miles per hour gusting to 73 miles per hour. The. 73 miles per hour was probably the gust speed... so during that one minute observation the wind could have had a peek gust of well over 90 MPH. Another example would be the blizzard of 1978 where in Chatham, Mass. the reporters reported a wind gust of 102 miles per hour. I later found out that that was a peak wind gust and that the gust speed was 87 mph. Now, according to the damage that I saw of the aftermath of hurricane Michael, especially at Tyndall Air Force Base, the gust speed was probably between 140 and 150 miles per hour which could have easily produced a peak gusts at several locations of more than 175 miles per hour. Therefore depending on how the media wishes to spin a story, sometimes they will say that a location had a" wind gust " when it really means peak gust or sometimes they'll say that there was a 'wind gust' which refers to the gust speed. So take your pick.

If you were at Mexico Beach right at the shoreline you would have seen and felt the sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and Gusts reaching 175 with Peak Gusts well over a 190 miles per hour.

How many chasers were at that location ? It seems almost all the footage from everyone is at that hotel..

How can we get meassures instruments for this events?

These various "in the storm" videos are amazing to watch Personally I consider storms like this fascinating...and would love to experience watching/going through one in person. (I guess you could call that storm chasing? .lol. ) It'll never happen though other than in daydream-life. --- Shocking & sad is seeing the aftermath vid's though.

Our waterfront home was just east of this location, by Tyndall Air Force Base. My wife and I had evacuated to Jacksonville the night before. We watched the news for any local updates, but nothing could prepare us for the total deviation we discovered when the national guard allowed us to check on our home 8 days later. EVERYTHING was gone! No power, no water, no sanitation, no phones, no cell phones, no gas, no food, no businesses, no banks, historiography were forced to set up tents with generators, no churches, no restaurants, all utility poles were on the streets, power lines on the ground, 85% of our trees were on the ground or broken in half... TOTAL DEVISTATION... Our home and possessions were gone, as it was for nearly everyone... As a result, 40% of the population was forced to move away

Your location had more destruction than say downtown Panama City right?

I grew up in tornado alley and now live in NC about 2.5 hours inland. My first storm was Hugo, when it hit the Charlotte area as a cat 1. No big deal most say, but uh Charlotte is further inland than where I live now. I was 8 years old and remember the winds and sleeping behind the couch at my aunt and uncle’s house. Floyd was the welcome to the coastal states present and I thought those 2 were the biggest nightmares. Florence was terrible because the never ending rain and sitting on top of us for days. That was projected to be a cat 3/4 when it hit the NC and a cat 1 when it got to my area. I was never so thankful when that storm lost its power. 21.25” later, we came through unscathed. But the flooding was terrible an hour from me. Most of those same areas were hit by Matthew in 2016. Michael was a breeze to go through a month after Florence. But it was crazy having 2 storms a month apart.

How does it happen that you seem to be in all the hurricanes?

Amazing enough to watch this video. But close your eyes during parts of it and just LISTEN to it. The wind sounds like the F22-Raptor it is so damn strong!

That’s so awsome to see but yet again it’s scary

I face category 5 cyclone philine and recently category 5 cyclone fani I know very dengerous from Odisha (puri) India.

I can’t imagine how any birds manage to survive that storm. I bet they knew it was coming and maybe flew a long distance away to avoid it. ether that or they must of been holding on real tight. Imagine how it must feel being a delicate bird in those trees holding out for that long.

But then, Opal didn't hit Panama City, it crossed the coast around Pensacola Beach. Of course, even there is wasn't as strong as Michael. Just sayin', it wasn't our storm (but it was a good storm, even here).

Not far enough, maybe 20 miles, but just being on the west side of the eye helped more than you would think, but not enough to notice while your riding it out. It was a big dang storm and continued inland at full force. Layed down entire forest !

Is it just me or at 2:19 does it look like a tornado it formed in the center of the frame.

You were on the Northwestern part of the eye wall. If you had been off to the east little farther the winds would have been 15 to 20% higher.

I was a kid when hurricane Donna hit near Miami (1960). After that there were several more that hit us while living there. I still have "storm dreams" that are sometimes horrific like above. I'm used to them but they wake me up on occasion. 🤔

I have it. We lived on East Ave in Panama City and we were never told to evacuate. So we had to ride the storm out, we went up in the air 4 times and came back down. It was horrifying

Quite a few from what I heard. I was in my house in St Andrews I love storms myself but was too much of everything flying around when it got bad I got into my hallway and crouched down no visibility and the whole house was shaking! The sound you will never forget and the pressure in your ears made them want to bleed you feel sick excited and scared all at the same time!

Above I saw landfall at 2pm. But I started seeing trees fall between 11am and 12pm so that must have been when it started to move on North.

I wish I would have been at that location during the eyewall. Would have parked. A car is a safe place to be in more than a building.

I was in the inner eyewall of both Andrew and Michael; and did extensive viewing of both' of their immediate aftermaths at grounds zero and surrounding locales. Andrew's wind damage was greater; with EVERY telephone pole (wood, concrete, and steel) flattened or severely bent over from 144 st south to Homestead, a distance of over 12 miles. This was not the case between Panama City and Mexico Beach. The maximum area of wind damage from Michael appeared, to me, to be very similar to that from Charley, 2004, in the area of downtown Punta Gorda adjacent to where Charlotte Harbor meats the Peace River (bridge on US 41). Great shots, but the use of an external mic + windcap could really benefit your footage overall

@dereksibley I Really like your video, but you should really change the part that says, "Callaway, Florida" in the title... you were all over Bay County... from Panama City Beach to Tyndall A.F.B. I know you and your comrades-in-arms were staying at a hotel in Callaway, but your footage compared to some of theirs, includes a wider range of locations. Just didn't want people that aren't from here to think that Callaway is the beach access point you went to go look at or the Hathaway Bridge that you were on the top of. Also don't want you to lose any cred for JUST being in "Callaway" because that is all the title said. Stay safe out there! -Bay County Local

I was thinking about changing the location title to multiple locations but it's to many locations to show. If you read the video description it does say we were in Panama City Beach and Callaway which was where most of the video was taken. Naming every single location is not what's really important here, it is the video that shows the power of this storm.

Something tells me that these winds are far way to far to be just 155 mph.

Come on it was kind of fun. Wish I could have ridden this out in my car in Callaway live or die.

So they were in front of the CVS for the approach of the eye, then during the eye they moved to the hotel which at that point had lost its entrance roof.

The hotel did pretty good imo. Wouldn't you rather at least be inside after spending the 1st half pinned down at the CVS?

What the hell? Alone trees bending in the wind.

Agreed. I want another storm just as strong or stronger so I can chase it. I got some of Michael but I want to drive through the eye of a cat 5. Hail Tiamat dark serpent lord of the morbid priests.

I wish I would have driven there rode out the storm. I was going to but left Tallahasee to late. I hope there is another one within 10 years just like this so I can see the eye. This was wonderful.

I wish I could have been there during the storm and Im going to start chasing so I hope there are more storms like it.

I watched this from a different person’s prospective. They were at the same hotel crabbing about their Jeep Wrangler lol. They had parked it under the the awning of the front of the hotel and of course Michael came and ripped that apart.

That was a Cat5 level gust at 11:52. Wouldn't be surprised if they upgraded this to a cat5 after the surveys.

I do not think it will be upgraded to a category 5. While the gusts were impressive in Michael, the sustained wind speeds and damage do not really support a category 5.

Not quite I dont think. The eyewall was probably 13 to 14 minutes.

13:40 gust looks like the end of days

I lived here and my home got destroyed. Tree fell in roof, there was a gas leak, tons of mold, insolation everywhere...thank God we evacuated.

Should have stayed. You were probably in a nonevacuation zone. If I had to do it all over again I would have gone to Callaway and left after the storm.

I spent 4 hours inside of that monster changed me forever

I work at bay medical hospital..We had to ride it out there...Its crazy to see what we went through now that it can be processed in my mind..god bless all of us.

Ahh I'm coping it's tough but doable fortunately my house only has roof damages one portion flooded but repairable I'm in Mississippi until it's fixed everyone that made it out is very blessed #850strong

Been through a bunch of hurricanes and sound from a camera is doesnt do it a lick of justice. Its a terrifying sound that you beg to stop hearing.

The mic noise, from wind directly impinging on the microphone, is absolutely not the noise of wind. It's just noise. Lots of times, it's also unavoidable.

I live in a city and state that does not get hurricane s as I live in Wisconsin in Milwaukee County in West Allis !! How ever we get severe thunderstorms no tornado s in West Allis well we had one but not by me !!! I was 19 then ! Im almost 64 !!! Get bad winter storms and have winter storm warnings advisories and have had 3 or 4 big blizzards !!!

I thought this hurricane wasn't gonna be bad and it was going to be fun because I like rain and thunder but no it had to tear my house down. We switched from room to room as our roof caved in and only 1 room survived. My cats at this point were terrified. We all had low blood pressure and our heads felt like we were being hit with a baseball bat. It was so intense our stomachs were hurting and I felt relieved to lie down in a bed in a hotel. I now live in new city but I am moving back soon! I lived in Callaway. Also I now have ptsd and I get terrified when just a little bit of wind blows in my face. My outside cat managed to survive. I tried to find him the day before but I couldn't I cried for days thinking be was dead..
